- Ok, so the last time I got the elastics out we went basic. Real basic - but you've got to start somewhere 8-)
This time I've gone in search of some kids who've got heaps of energy and laugh in the face of an Elastics Challenge.
Are you jumpy enough to accept the challenge and give Elastics a go???

This game was the highlight of my childhood. We call it Uma and it's normally played with a long thread of yarn that always used break when someone stepped over it during a game because it made their loss more obvious. My favourite memory is of the time I played it with a couple of neighbours on the sand filled with ants milling about all around without a care in world.
What a wonderful memory! OOo I must try it with yarn. It must make the game space get shorter each time though! Does that make it trickier?
It was one of the games we used to play near school and doctrine classes. We used to go up to 5 th 6 th and 7th level. Seventh was elastic round the necks..
Crickey! I could never get past armpits!
Omw! We played this game in South Africa also but with a few twists! It’s crazy how the same games are played world wide
I am so shocked! I grew up in Toronto and I remember there was this girl that moved from Jamaica and showed us how to play this game. She got a bunch of elastic bands and tied them together.
This is so nostalgic! When I try to talk to other people about this game, they don’t know it and I thought it was just a Caribbean thing. But it seems to be a British/British colony thing.
Thank you for the video! when everybody passed the bum, we would bring it up to your waist and just jump over it and then bring it up to underneath your arm and then try jumping over that. and for those who were able to, we brought it up to the necks and THAT was dangerous. We weren’t even on grass. I don’t know why the teachers let us do these things lol
"Elastics" has been played around the world for decades! :D
Yeah it's the same in Senegal.it's like a dance
We played it in Lithuania and apparently it’s known in Korea too, so maybe it’s worldwide!
😢This brings back such happy memories in the playground around the late sixties and early seventies.
We would search the area for discarded elastic bands which were the same as gold dust for us as children..I suspect it wouldn’t happen these days, although I wonder if once we stopped foraging for bands etc. the waste problem started.
If there weren’t enough children to play then two sturdy chairs were used instead.
Shoe buckles could be a menace ,and most of us wore Clarks Mary Janes etc, sensible shoes to last the summer whether we liked them or not as they were deemed ‘good for our feet’ by most parents, so the bands had to be placed where they wouldn’t get caught on the buckle.
What with this,marbles-sixers,oncers and everything between and Jacks -one bounce or two, kept us happily occupied along with our Den building ,biking ,tree house making and tunnel digging. On the swings we used to try and get the ‘bumps’ when we went too high and the swing juddered, and hung upside down by our legs on branches of a tree well over ten feet tall.
God knows how we emerged from childhood relatively unscathed, what’s a broken arm or leg after all.
It sounds like you had a wonderful childhood! It's important that kids push their boundaries. That may mean they end up with a bruise or two, or maybe even a broken bone, but by taking a tumble they learn their limits, build resilience and that sometimes you need attempt things multiple times until you succeed.
This is how we spent many hours during recess, for years! ("Elastico"
for the elastic band we used to bring). Always 2 girls at each end,
serving as the holders, the band would get raised a "level" each time a
cycle of tricks was accomplished. Ankle height was Level 1. Knee height
was level 3. Waist height was level 5 (and the hardest!). The same
tricks were jumped at each level, until failure (failure included
stepping on the elastic, then you'd have to wait your turn again). I was
always really bad at this, but always had so much fun! Ironically, I
was the one with the longest legs! -but the least athletic. 😄
I loved it too. xox
Me reading about elastin protein and suddenly remembering this game😅 I used to play back then.....I miss those days🐻❄️
You don't have to miss out - you can still play elastics now, if you want to xoxo
@@TreehutTVI used to practice with the elastic tied around chairs at home, but it’s not so much fun. It’d be amazing to find adult friends who’d like to try it!
My childhood favorite ❤😂
Came to Sweden in the 1960s, we called it Twist, I played it as a child in the 80s.
I love that games like these are played around the world and across many generations!
Fun games I use to play as a kid
Me too! xox
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales
Inside
Outside
Puppy dogs tails
Do you know any other patterns???
@@TreehutTV lol no! just that one
@@TreehutTV We used to say: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Inside, Outside, Inside, On.
Another rhyme we used was:
2,4,6,8
Mary at the cottage gate,
Eating cherries off a plate,
2,4,6,8.
and that one would go:
left side, right side, inside, out
left side, right side, inside, out
left side, right side, inside, out
left side, right side, inside, on.
I could go all the way to 'hipsies' for that one. It was one of the very few games I was actually good at.
Another one we did was, everyone got in a line one at a time facing the elastic. First kid would jump forwards on both strands, on, on. then the whole line would follow. We called that 'Jumpsies'
Next the whole line would repeat but on one leg. 'hopsies'
next repeat with feet crossed 'crosslegs'
next was jump in a crouch position 'babies'
then finally jumping backwards, 'backsies'
then we'd go to 'kneesis' and repeat from the beginning.
Thanks for the video. For moments I was feeling as if I was there on that play ground only.
Glad you enjoyed it! xox
We called it KISH, played in a bit different way...
Ahhh... 25 years agooooo
I love that so many people have played Elastics/Kish in so many different ways, for so many years!
We never had a name for it ...we just played Mississippi and tied two ropes together. These bands would've been freaking fantastic
I am from 🇧🇬 & remember this elastic leg game with crossing & higher levels was my & my peoples childhood ; it doesn't feel like it was long ago but like how did nine + years flew already 😔😔
Time does fly, doesn't it! I love how this game has been played by so many generations and in so many countries!
I lived in Kenya and we would play this game aaall the time. We called it Blada. So nice to see others play it as well
It’s a game that has been played around the world and it seems different countries or areas used different patterns in their games 😍
We called it blada- a derivative of bladder/ rubber tyre elastic 🥰🦋
As a male growing up in school watching girls play this wondering how the hell do you play lol
Please do more videos like this, love your vids
big fan sir
Awesome!
Sounds like a commentator for a sport lol
we did the necksie as I was a shorty it was very difficult
Wow! Necksies! Super tricky because your neck is so much thinner than your chest
Ah used to watch you when I was a kid with Suzy’s world, always was scared when you chopped the egg’s heads off haha 😆 awesome to see you continuing to create memories for kids
Oh for the episode Brains? Sorry about that my friend xox
In the 90s we made them by linking rubberbands together.
Awesome! That would have had plenty of stretch!
God, depressing to think how the body ages. I was expert at these when I was a little girl....would struggle to manage more than one jump now!
You might be surprised. I turn 55 this year and can still jump... though it's much harder than it was when I was a kid :D xox
Us boys would look at the girls all perplexed when they used to play this.
:-D you should have given it a go! It's loads of fun!
I used to play during my school days, but nowadays we cannot see our children playing any of these.
My kids and their friends used to play this game when they were younger and lots of schools throughout NZ have bought sets of my elastics for the kids to use during exercise sessions!
England, Ireland, Scotland whales inside outside monkeys tale. I use to play years ago when I was a kid. Tried today and I was so puffed after a couple jumps lol
I know what you mean! The higher the band goes the harder it gets. Good on you for giving it a go though! I'm impressed xox
Good ole suzzy aye
Thank you! xox
We called it jigsy
Wow! I've not heard that name for it before - but it's a great game by any name, isn't it! :D
A few of us were gymnasts and would go all the way up to under-armsies
In Senegal we called it pillibeum (don't know if it's spelled like that but we pronounce it like that)
I love that this game is played around the world. Different names, different patterns but pretty much the same game! xox
@@TreehutTV The way we play it is different to be honest😂 It's like a dance here
@@TreehutTV Yepp the same game !
I'd love to see how you played it in Senengal!
We play in school times
All hail Squid Games
Do they play Elastics in the series?!?
I love it look sooo fun
It is. Give it a go!
Ohhh game changer
Glad you found us! xox
Ero fortissimi
Nice
Cool
where do you get the elastics from?
Just search on Amazon. During primary we used to play this all the time. This just unlocked a memory I never knew I had.
You could make your own, or I have them on line store.suzy.co.nz/
tie rubber bands together
How many people are here because of Squid Game?
Hahaha! Have yet to see it (I hear its a bit gruesome!) but guess they play Elastics??
@@TreehutTV they do not, but they mention it as a game possibility. Yeah, a BIT gruesome.
Elasticul nu se joacă așa 🙄
There are so many ways to play the game. How do you play it?
This rubber jump game is all physical exercise. Its better for kids to sit back at home and do computer games and watching you tube
:D hahahaha!
