I've always lived close to Molenbeek and among my family and friends, Molenbeek was always considered a not-so-nice place to go.
It functions as a ghetto. I would never take a stroll there at dusk, for instance.
And no, it is not like "every other city". And it has been so for years and years.

Stopped watching at "Its a socioeconomic problem". Nothing intellectually honest can come out of that premise.
Stop excusing and tacitly defending and rationalizing the acts of terrorists. The reason islamist terrorists did what they did isn't because they didn't get enough government assistance (from a social democracy state like Belgium of all places) for education or jobs or whatever. By saying that you're indirectly saying society is responsible, not the terrorist, its a disgrace to the families of the victims. Throwing money at the problem through some socialist welfare state isn't going to defeat terrorism. That's intellectual dishonesty. Islamist terrorists do not share the same motivations as an armed robbery criminal.They are motivated by being brainwashed into an evil hateful and barbaric ideology that tells them that "fighting the evil sinful western infidel" and a total Islamic state under Allah is a sure path to heaven/ martyrdom. Now that may be a twisted version of islam, maybe that's not what "true muslims" are (and I hope its not), whatever the case its irrelevant; the facts are that it exists, it is at the very least a radical interpretation of islam's doctrine, and should be defeated in every facet. And its a damn good start to at least start diagnosing the problem honestly and realistically instead of idealistic fantasies. The problem is within islam, not out of it. Moderate/ peaceful muslims should be defeating radicalization at the front lines in their own communities and culture, and stopping radical preachers in mosques from radicalizing youth. (So why CNN/ abc aren't we hearing more of that instead of more welfare state/ blame game rhetoric)
Socially economic areas regardless of race and religion always have problems with crime,drugs and general anti social behaviour. I come from an all white disadvantaged area and i promise you this happens here, probably in a larger amount than in molenbeek actually. Murders on a regular basis, stabbings,shootings,car theft/joyriding nightly, regular burglaries, drug dealing, used needles in playgrounds ect... This is in an all white area where i live.

As a EU citizen, I am looking to move back to Europe, but the more I look, the more I'm heart broken. Where are the women? I supposed women aren't supposed to be interivewed in Molenbeek? I barely seen any women even in the market, mostly men, and men and men. Do women feel free to walk alone by themselves in Molenbeek? This place just looks like any of the male domainting Mid East backwards countries. I don't see diversity or beautify from this kind of immigration. All I see are men and men and men who are hanging aound in groups like they are back in their 3rd world countries. The only beauty is from the buildings left behind by Europeans before they gave away their city. Sad.

I was in Molenbeek in April. I went to watch the local football club play. We walked from the station to football ground. I saw them win 2-1.

Walked back from Brussels through Molenbeek onto accomodation in Koekelberg at 4am... no problems at all and I am a white Scotttish guy. Just as bad as any large city.

Me and my friend wondered into Moelenbeek last year in error. Within five minutes I'd been mugged and phone and wallet stolen! Also we were clearly the only two white people there and I remembered being stared at - first time in my life I experienced this. Awful awful place for a visitor!

I was in France and then in Brussels and felt much more welcomed in the banlieues and Moelenbeek then elsewhere. French people and some belgians are cold but the immigrants usually are much more talkative which I liked a lot.
