  • I have this CD-rom Library tower, that I have been saving for like 15 years,,,,, Just because I thought it was cool. Now I want to use it for a DIY DAS Storage Box for the Tiny Data Center Bunker.
To make the DAS, I will be using the Adaptec AEC-82885T. 36 Port SAS Expander.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

I had the HP version of this. The HP had http, ftp, and other protocols (if i remember correctly), and i used as an arive for drivers and Linux ISO back in the late 90s early 00s.
This video made me very nostalgic.

And to all of you who hasn't a CD-tower laying around: there's an Sharkoon ATX-Case with many 5,25" bays in the front. Room enough for a mainboard with a sas-card, a 10gb network-card and truenas, unraid or any other distribution. The sharkoon Rebel-12.

The DP15 is the AUI connector, used to go to a converter to either PDS, Thinnet with BNC (RG59) or Thicknet with N-connectors (RG8'ish), or even TokenRing in some cases.
I might have a few AUI/Thicknet converters somewhere in the "museum" ;)

Just some thoughts on this project...
3D Print a bracket to hold the SAS expander and insulate the backside of it from any metal surfaces.
Replace the stock fan with a pair of noctua industrial 80mm fans for better airflow at a similar noise level.
Replace the front window with mesh for airflow.
Use a pair of 4 bay 3.5" drive in 3 5.25" drive bay holders to still have room for 8 hot-swap 3.5" drives, and put in an 8 bay 2.5" in one 5.25" drive bay for SSDs (tiered storage).
3D Print a case to hold your SAS HBA with a fan blowing on it.
I personally would replace the PSU with something modern. Modular ATX supplies are great for this, you just need to bridge the power-on signal to ground, and there are very cheap ATX-24 pin adapters with just those two pins populated for this very reason. AT supplies are getting quite old, and can fail spectacularly. At a former employer we got in a palette of new never used AT supplies from a reputable company, the caps had all leaked out and when you plugged them in the +12 volt line would shoot up to about 24 to 28 volts and blow up anything you had plugged in. A 25+ year old used AT supply is a liability.

I'd be careful with that old AT PSU, they don't usually have a lot of 12v capacity, which is what everything these days runs on. Also the poor thing is over 20 years old, and deserves an honourable retirement. I'd look for an alternative for power, like some of the modern SFF units.

What about taking all the old cd players and remove the guts but mount the facia back on the cd case.
It would look like nothing happened, no one would try to steal it and the metal cases could be screwed back in place for each hard drive to sit in.
Or you can say ' Get knotted i'm not going to that much trouble' lol.
