I think Jimi Hendricks was (at that time) a retired military soldier. He fought in Vietnam. It's his National Anthem too.
Jimi Hendrix received a General Discharge after about year. It isn't relevant to his performance or that it was his anthem. General is less than honorable but not Dishonorable. He wasn't in long enough to retire.
He didn't fight in Vietnam, but he was a veteran.
He got injured in airborne training so he didn’t actually fight iirc.
A freaking Paratrooper i think?
Since this was done during a very turbulent era in American history, Jimi brought it.
Not ranking yet, but the Hendrix performance was iconic.
Jimi's version of our National Anthem is iconic. It's is sad, beautiful, and still gets me every time I hear it
Hendrix didn't offend anyone, just brought more people around to the anthem.
Especially from that generation, I believe you may be right!
Hendrix is a classic rendition and very much a part of the 60's America
Definitely part of the 60’s zeitgeist. Not offended at all. Jimmy Hendrix is a part of Americana. I won’t be singing to it, but it’s earned a place in American musical history
Jimi Hendrix version was as the sun came up during Woodstock. He made the guitar sound like gun ships as a statement against the Vietnam War.
Jimi Hendrix's take on the national anthem is BY FAR my favorite version! You guys really need to hear and see the entire performance at the Woodstock Music Festival. By the summer of 1969 the Vietnam anti-war movement in the U.S. was at its peak. Jimi Hendrix, a former U.S. Army paratrooper in 101st Airborne Division, who was somehow able to express the sounds of war, especially the horror of carpet bombing in the jungles of 'Nam embedded into The Star-Spangled Banner through feedback loops. You guys must see/hear the full performance!
Hendrix's version is a masterclass in how to express feelings through music. It's amazing.
🤦🏼♂️😂
Two Thumbs Up! Although it's not my favorite version, the basis of the performance must move it high up the list. The country was violently divided. Vietnam had taken a severe toll on absolute patriotism. People were dodging the draft which had just been established as a lottery. I missed by one number and waited the last 6 weeks concerned that my board would have another call. Hendrix expressed the anger, hate, and dissention of the sides of the division. As we approached the Kent State killings the next year, tensions were building. Hendrix captured that moment in our nation with our most patriotic song.
Yeah jimmys was a FAR sight from beat actually I would put it not even on this list! Personally couldn’t stand dudes music!
I would think that many of the people at that performance were against the Vietnam War & against the draft, so they would not want to listen to anything patriotic. I think it was a fairly gutsy thing to play but many of the audience had left by the time he played, so maybe he thought, “What the heck…”
I agree highly with the #1 pick…….I remember Whitney singing this and my mouth just dropped to the ground, it was absolutely powerful, emotional and beautiful!💕
I have heard the full hendrix version and it is amazing
Whitney will always be #1 🇺🇸
Hendrix’s version is iconic and you will actually still hear it to this day on the radio on the 4th of July
Jennifer Hudson’s rendition was powerful, courageous and memorable because of everything she was going thru at the time
Jimi Hendrix rendition is difficult to be viewed fairly when you're looking at it now because it was an anthem that came at a time in America's history that was hugely important and Was the beginning of so many different movements that changed the world into what we have today. That was an anthem of an entire generation. If you're not deeply familiar with Woodstock other than having heard of it you should really look into what it was.
I would have been at Woodstock but I was getting married in a month. We were torn apart with Viet Nam, love Jimi Hendrick’s rendition.
Woodstock 99 was a complete disaster. I was born in 00 the year after however I watched the documentary on Netflix and literally, it seemed like everything that could ever possibly go wrong went wrong. The amounts of r**es and sanitation issues was just so terrible.
69 had real problems but it was a different time. You just went with whatever was happening. But that was a long time ago, it’s hard for people that didn’t live through those times to relate. I know people who were there and it was the time of their lives. I stayed home to get married, 53 years in Sept.
@@dinahpellerin1251 I mean 99 not 69...
I would have gone but I was 14 and my parents wouldn't let me. After watching the documentary, I finally forgave them. I have a feeling I would still be trying to find my way home. 😂
Everyone has their favorites. They mostly stuck to 2000's performances, but mine was from Lou Rawls during the (baseball) World Series years ago. Ms. Houston's was stunning, and Jimi Hendrix' makes me tearful and very patriotic.
Jimi smashed it. It’s absolutely deserving of being on this list!
I'm 53. I grew up in England and other countries defending the Free World.
I absolutely agree Jimi nailed it. He encapsulated our nation AND an entire generation in one wrap.
You all realize Jimi’s rendition was in protest.
Indeed! (I would have had it around 2-3)
It's kind of a tradition that singers put their own style into the national anthem when they perform it. I never thought much of it but now I realize I like it!
Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock playing the anthem is iconic
Definitely Whitney Houston 1. Don’t yell at me people but I think Jennifer Hudson was better than Beyonces
Agreed
Agreed.
Agreed
I think Gaga and Jennifer Hudson were both better than Queen B...
100% agreed
Jimi Hendrix is so iconic I don't think people really think twice that it has such a twist. Most people get upset when people overdo the anthem, but Jimi usually gets a pass as we have all heard it at some point. I honestly know him for the anthem more than his music. You also have to remember the '60s in the states was kind of about revolution. We had civil rights movements at its peak, the war with vietnam, people massively protesting that war, desegregation, black power, women getting more rights and starting to break out of the traditional roles expected of them more, introduction of new music and ideas. It was a crazy time. I think Jimi Hendrix rendition kind of sums of the change the 1960s brought well as it was performed in August of 1969 with the decade coming to an end.
It is the counter culture era. Jose Feliciano's 1968 National Anthem at game 5 of the World Series is My favorite. Link below.
ruclips.net/video/aQkY2UFBUb4/видео.html
In the US, putting your own twist on the anthem is not a bad thing! That’s why we have so many awesome renditions of it in so many genres of music. Edit: the guitar version is awesome!
It all depends.
I totally agree. Each person uses the the tools they were gifted with in a different way. Singers use their voice , and Jimi Hendrix used his fingers and a guitar.
I honestly hate when singers try to make it their own. It is beautiful as is. Subtle changes are fine, but too much is too much. 🇺🇸. Whitney won because she kept it original notes. She did beautiful.
In your opinion. In my opinion it is a bad thing and is disrespectful to all the people who gave their lives fighting in wars for this country.
@@johnnywrath6969
I think Mike Rowe does the best job of anyone who has aung the national anthem.
Jimi Hendrix by far.
Also in the context of the Vietnam war of the sixties and seventies..
The American draft years.
Jimi Hendrix one is very well known he played it with his guitar upside down and imo is #2 only behind Whitney !
Whitney Houston is my favorite. Closely followed by the Choir of the Armed Forces rendition that they had as an honorable mention. That one is amazing.
I think Meatloaf's rendition from the MLB All-Star game was worthy of being on the list, and Jimmie Hendricks version is iconic it's him singing through his guitar
I’ve never heard it, but considering Meatloaf’s voice, I’m sure it is great… and I will be going to listen to it as soon as I hit send.
I would have liked to hear his over the Dixie Chicks or Lady GaGa's.
😁
Meatloafs rendition gives me goosebumps
totally agree, dare i say top 5 worthy
Meatloaf’s rendition has lost some of its luster due to his increasingly radical right wing views (anti-vaxx among them). At least that’s my opinion.
I knew before the video even started that it was gonna be Whitney. I don't think it can be done better than that. She was a national treasure. Still is.
New Subscriber here! Whitney, Whitney, Whitney! I was 21 when that performance happened and I definitely bought the single. I had just come home from a semester abroad in a VERY different country from America, and I sobbed like a baby when I heard that amazing rendition.
Fun Fact - During Lady Gaga's performance you can see the sign language interpreter. That's Marlee Matlin she's a deaf actress and also the youngest women EVER to win the Oscar for "Best Actress" at 18 years old for "Children of a Lesser God"
This is a difficult song to sing, all singers were great. As an American the best was when mic went out for singer and the crowd continued singing. That's American.
Jimi Hendrix' version was the first thing I downloaded on I Tunes. Love it. He played it interspersed with his guitar mimicking the sounds of war. You should listen to the whole thing.
The most emotional and memorable anthem performance I've ever witnessed was the one by Jesse McGuire at the 2001 World Series. It was right after 9/11, and the NY Yankees were playing the Arizona Diamondbacks in one of the greatest World Series of all time. McGuire's rendition gives me chills and tears every time I hear it. Beautiful!

Definitely watch and react the Hendrix SSB performance. 🎸 We loved it here in America. 🇺🇸
It's not at all offensive for an artist to take some artistic liberties on the delivery of the SPB. It's what makes it so different from other national anthems, it's a song where a lot of artistic liberty can reflect the freedom that the country is supposed to embody. It does get a little annoying when an artist over-flourishes too much, but other than that it doesn't matter of it's Hendrix slaying on guitar or whatever.
As long as it's honored we don't mind artists or anyone singing their renditions. Everyone sing it differently anyway because it's sung from our hearts and souls and makes it personally unique.
When the Anthem plays at a Dallas Stars hockey game, the fans always yell out "STARS!" when the singer comes to that part of the song. lol and at the end .....the Home of the STARS! lol fun times. at every hockey game even today no matter what venue a game is at, you will always hear one guy the the crowd yelling STARS...lol
Whitney Houston has always been my favorite National Anthem. Yeah, others were great but Whitney has had best Anthem for over 30yrs
I am feeling very Patriotic, thanks for this reaction. May God continue to Bless this Nation.
The national anthem is one of the hardest songs to sing. I personally love Jimi Hendrix version of the national anthem given it’s still recognizable even though he’s only using an electric guitar. Also Jimi is the GOAT of All guitarists in history. Love Lady Gaga’s version of course she is one of those singers that could sing the phone book and I’d enjoy it.
Look into Woodstock - one of the most iconic events of the 1960's and in American pop culture. As great as many of the selections on this list were, Hendrix had a truly original take on the song. Absolutely epic!
Whitney is defo 1 always😝🤷🏾♀️
I love Jimi’s version of the anthem. Iconic!
It’s hard for you to make a decision about Hendrix’s rendition because you didn’t really hear much of it. You really need to listen to the entire performance. It’s amazing.
Hendrix did us proud. He actually has the bomb exploding. Watch the full version.
All these performances are amazing. I knew Whitney would be number one…I don’t know if anyone will ever top that performance. I love Jimi’s version on the guitar. It’s just classic for many Americans I think it’s respectful and beautiful yet kind of sad.
Jimi's performance of the anthem is one of the highlights of the Woodstock movie. Watch the whole thing and you'll see that he's interpreting it. He is trying to use music to tell the truth from his perspective. Listen for the rocket and bomb sound effects, "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air." Remember, this was during the war in Vietnam and his audience were of draft age. They had a lot of strong feelings about deploying rockets and bombs. In the context of the battle referenced by the poem that became the Star Spangled Banner, Americans were the ones getting shelled by the British in 1812, so it's about survival... waking up the next morning after the battle and you're still alive; even the flag is still there. Jimi is asking the listener to question being the aggressor in war. He even throws in a phrase of Taps, which is the bugle call played at American military funerals. I see it as Jimi showing love for America but also being willing to ask the audience to think more deeply about the consequences of our actions.
I don’t know if it still is, but for years, Whitney’s version was used as the sign off for AFRTS, Armed Forces Radio and Television Station in Europe
It was Woodstock 🤣, y'all are way too young for that
So my top 3 are:
Whitney Houston
With a tie for Jennifer Hudson and Lady GaGa.
See the video of Lady GaGa paying tribute to Julie Andrews Sound of Music for the full range if her vocals.
Jimi's version is absolutely iconic and truly captures the mood of the country at that time. The Vietnam anti-war movement was at an all time high and having a version that truly captured the horrors of war was so powerful. It's one of my favorites ever.
The Hendrix one is AMAZING I love it!!!!!!
Hendrix is absolutely iconic his playing it 55 yrs ago has never been forgotten or will ever be since I was actually teen back then the people who put it down then have since changed their minds and he and the song is considered a national treasure
Hendrix performance will always be the most epic for me. It's a very moving rendition. Nothing offensive about it.
Whitney Houston did it best, vocally.
Absolutely
I think singers putting a twist on the National Athem, especially at ball games, is an American tradition. I like when they sing it more straight up though. I like to sing along.
At 10:58 in video, note flyover of the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels.
Check out the full performance of Hendrix's rendition . . . it's phenomenal
I was 22 year old at the time of Woodstock. I live in California and didn't make it to that event. However, I saw Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Otis Redding and many other '60s rock legends at the 1967 Monterey, California Pop Fastival. Yeah I'm a old hippie now.
Jimi Hendricks sang with his guitar, it gave me goosebumps, and proud tears!
Thanks for the early heads up that it was a Mojo video. You saved me 19 minutes.
Jimi Hendrix served in the 101st Airborn division, and earned the right to try it his own way.
Everyone sings it there own way the better the Performance the more patriotism comes out. I have always loved whittney Huston version but when my daughter sang it in jr high I told her sing it loud sing it proud this is your country and people died so you could be standing here make em feel it and she made me so PROUD!!
Jimi Hendrix's rendition was groundbreaking at the time. Since his performance, hundreds/thousands of people have tried to replicate it on guitar.
From my seat, I'd go with
1. Whitney Houston
2. Faith Hill
3. Jennifer Hudson
Jimi Hendrix's version was somewhat controversial, but I like it. Many Americans can hear the first three notes and know immediately who played it and where. I think he only lived a year after that performance. More than 50 years later, it made this list. I'd call that a legacy. 🙂
I agree. Whitney Houston in Tampa, was the best.
Jimmie Hendrix rendition was a protest to the Vietnam war, and in this country the national anthem is not considered sacred, infact a lot of people people prefer America the beautiful rather than the state spangled banor.
Ray Charles should have been on the list. His song is played on the radio and movies. It's super famous.
Lady Gaga's performance was amazing, classy and heart felt. You should watch the whole performance.
You need to listen to Hendricks version, all of it, and you will feel the goosebumps it creates because of how powerful it is. I still prefer a classic version by a great vocalist, but I really like Hendricks rendition as well.
the best one is the Kentucky all state choir 2019 national anthem.. during the week long competition at 11pm all the residents of the regency hotel in louisville kentucky come out on the inside balconies and sing the anthem.. some r high scool choir members, some r people just in the hotel.. it sounds so amazing
The 3 most Important parts of TV shows each year all have to do with the Super Bowl. The National Anthem, The Half Time Show and The Commercials lol.
Jimi Hendrix version was and always will be the best. 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Jimi Hendrix preformed at Woodstock, not a baseball game, it was beautiful!
Jimi Hendrix’s guitar rendition screams FREEDOM, exactly what our flag represents. Love it, cherish it, Respect it! Preacher
For the most part, I don't mind the National Anthem being sung with a different style or individual flare, as long as the words and relative structure remain the same I suppose. That being said, I can see why they chose these top 10, but many sound very similar to me. For my money, my favorite is Marvin Gaye at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, much more than just an honorable mention. Very unique, very memorable, and very Marvin Gaye, which is never a bad thing. I'd say give that one a look if you like: ruclips.net/video/QNydcwDriuU/видео.html.
🦾
Noone found it offensive at all cuz Jimmy was one of the best guitarists on earth
Jimi Hendrix exemplified the emotion and meaning of the Anthem and honored those who sacrificed even at that time in war. His rendition brings me to an emotional state as a vet far more.
You may or may not have noticed, during The National Anthem, all flags are "dipped", lowered somewhat, beside the American flag, which stands tall over all others.
As a ‘60s wild child… loved Jimmy Hendricks version.
Hendrix version is rad and it gives me chills. America is about putting your own twist, freedom of speech and his guitar is how Hendrix spoke
Jimi's rendition of the national anthem was something the younger generation could call their own the older generation hated it. Probably the reason we loved it.
Everyone puts their own twist on the anthem. The Jimi Hendrix moment is considered legendary.
It was also during Vietnam times and almost everyone was against being over there
Love the Jimi Hendrix rendition, he was a Vietnam Vet. He played in a band in the service. You can't go wrong with Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston and the Armed Forces Band in my opinion.
Whitney Houston's is, by far, THE best performance of all time (IMO). To this day, it brings me to tears.
there is one song called "America the Beautiful" done by several people but one the Ray Charles version is by far the best.
Jennifer Hudson’s rendition was amazing as well as Whitney Huston. Two of the best ever. Both have/had such range and they could hold those high notes so long.
Jimi Hendrix's performance was contextual for him being a soldier in the Vietnam War and this being the time of Vietnam War at Woodstock a very anti war hippie event. Most of American events you have to think about the time frame for context I think.
Omg they are soo young. I hope they don't get flack because of what they thought about Jimi Hendrix legendary performance
You need to listen to the whole hendrix version. Also. Freedom of expression.
Whitney Houston stunned me from head to toe with this rendition.
Whitney’s is just perfection and stands out - which is amazing to say because there are so many amazing, beautiful, out-of-this-world performances on this list.
69yrs old and I still cry every time I hear our Country s song!! be well all you out there and stay kind to yourself and one another ❤️ 💜
As an American, I don't mind interpretations of the anthem as long as they don't stray *too* far from the original. Hendrix I see as perfectly fine and great because he was merely playing to his greatest strength (guitar solos.)
Every performer puts their own twist on the anthem.
For me, anytime someone performs the anthem, they need to come with their own version to knock our socks off!
You should really react to kids singing the national anthem. Some of them will blow your mind.
Yeah Hendrix and Whitney Houston’s versions are one of a kind, powerful and amazing. Goose bumps every time.
Whitney Houston is the absolute best performance of all time.
Hendrix and his guitar played at Woodstock. I promise you everyone there loved it. Him playing the national anthem on his guitar was the sh$t! Lol.
We love all versions as long as they're respectfully done.
The Dixie Chicks talked smack about our sitting President while standing on foreign ground. It had nothing to do with who the President was. That's as bad as dragging the flag on the ground. You just don't do that.
Lady Gaga makes me puke.
When Jennifer Hudson's family got murdered Trump put her up in one of his properties.
love jimi hendrix version
Honorable mentions to the crowd at the Boston Bruins game who all sang the national anthem together after the Boston Marathon Bombing, the CANADIANS at a Toronto Maple Leafs game who stepped in to sing the Star Spangled Banner after some technical difficulties, and Jose Feliciano at the 1968 World Series which was the first artist interpretation of the anthem and nearly ruined his career.
Now you’ve got to do the WORST national anthem performances of all time.
Thank you, I had forgotten about his version. I loved it.
At the time, many people thought Jimmi Hendrix's rendition of the American National Anthem was inappropriate. Johnny Carson asked Jimmi what he thought of people saying that. Jimmi responded earnestly, "I thought it (his rendition) was beautiful." I agree with Jimmi, not only because of the music, but because his heart seemed to be in the right place.
American’s love when others put an awesome twist on the piece!
You had to be a person of the 60s to understand it - it was a great homage to the USA!!!
