    This solo RPG was the catalyst for a 6 month ttrpg (ICRPG rules) campaign for 5 of us. It's excellent and everyone should grab it if they are a fan of the genre.

    I'm glad RUclips's algorithm showed me this video. Even though I've had nice things said about my solo journaling rpg on itch, I don't care much for the journaling part and built up the rpg mechanics to a point where the journaling isn't necessary. I think this video gave me the push to make journaling optional for my game. Definitely subscribing. I recently played Zombies in my Pocket, I found it really fun.

    I can imagine that this game could, with a bit of effort, be hacked into something like a western, where instead of a ronin you would be a gunslinger. The most you'd have to do is probably just reflavor some tables.

      You are right :) I would also recommend the Drifter if you are looking for Western themed RPG which is more like Barbarian Prince

    This game is amazing! Are there any other solo rpg's like this that don't require journaling/creative writing as mechanics but still make a story automatically from the charts and encounters? This system is such a cool one

    • @MelvLee
      @MelvLee  2 года назад +7

      Yes, there are many mechanic driven games like this!
      If you like hexcrawl games, I would recommend also trying some of the games that I recently covered
      The likes of "The Swarm" , "Courier", "The Drifter", "Barbarian Prince"
      If you want something that feels like playing through a DnD module, I would recommend the "Dungeon Hero" mini zines
      If you want something that feels like a dungeon dive, I would recommend "A Torch in the dark" and "Dead belt"

    This game is pretty awesome. There's an old game not dissimilar from this called Lone Wolf and Cub based off of the manga and film series. Really not that dissimilar. It's just that Mayfair games Lone Wolf and Cub was incomplete and the combat system was very confusing. I fully intend on playing Ronin utilizing a new chart with the cards from Lone Wolf and Cub as well as the really cool game board and really cool game board map that comes with it.

    • @MelvLee
      @MelvLee  2 года назад

      I have heard of the manga but not a game based on it! Thanks for letting me know!
      It is also a great idea to use other game material to help generate the encounter!

    Questions:
    What happens if you roll a tie on a talk check?
    Do I gain reputation per samurai I defeated if I defeated multiple and chose to spare all?
    Negative Compassion? Is this possible?

    • @MelvLee
      @MelvLee  2 года назад +1

      1. If you follow the rules to the letter, you will only success if the white die + determination is larger than dark die, a tie will also count as a fail although I house ruled it so I can roll again.
      2. Compassion loss / reputation gain is per opponent spared or killed, I also house ruled it to maximum 1 compassion loss or 1 reputation gain per fight instead.
      3. All attributes ranged from 0-6 only so there won't be negative compassion
      Hope it helps :)

      @@MelvLee Another question is for example the blacksmith encounter. Is that the only one where you're supposed to roll on the searching for something table? I've been rolling that one as a precursor to the encounter but find it hard and almost impossible to do.

    • @MelvLee
      @MelvLee  2 года назад +1

      @@Eugene24820 I consider the Searching for something action as a general Roleplay action to add flavour to the story instead of a hard game mechanic. So I don’t consider it as the precursor for the weapon master encounter (assuming that is the one you are referring to)
      Instead, I generally use it to add more stories after an encounter to get a more logical / conclusive ending, as my example in the video suggested, My character asked the family he saved on the road for information as it seems unlikely he will just walk away without saying a word to the people he just saved :)

    torch it dark is expensive, you also have to pay for printing and binding, and compared to something commercial like Destiny Quest the price is far too high. Same for this.
    3:36 a ronin is not like, but exactly as, a samurai without a master, irrespective of the reason.
    33:40 there is no story, no plot, just random generating of gibberish. Really, try destiny quest.

      Destiny Quest is similar to the Fighting Fantasy style game books. IMO, the audience for solo RPGs aren’t exactly the same.

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 Год назад

      @@DennisCNolasco No it's nothing like FF. But yes I agree target audience is different (think Morrowind vs Skyrim).
      In solo RPGs you are actually creating, and not following someone else's plot.
