It would appear I have broken my RX8 EV conversion.

- So after over heating, she cooled down, I drove home - all good. After installing the cooling system - she no longer works!
Anyone with any bright ideas - let me know!
Not ideal. Keep us up to date buddy👍 My motor arrived for my TVR today 😉
Nice! EV TVR will be ace!
@@SouthWestEVUK RX8 though, such a great idea, practical, cheap, good looking just that wankel engine letting it down. Maybe i need to convince Chris at Zero EV to do a kit 🤔
😁👍🏻
Oh no Dave! Absolutely gutted to hear this 😕 I am sure you will fix it though 🤞
Thanks, just bought a full 150kw stack! motor, inverter and charger - one part must fix whats broken lol
Gutted for you matey. However, I'm sure you will fix it though. Have really enjoyed the build process and please keep up the good work. :-)
Thanks Dave, it really is very gutting.
Maybe the car thinks its still got its rotary and therefore about time to breakdown...lol
yeah, maybe the rotary was never the problem in RX8's - perhaps it was always the chassis!
@@SouthWestEVUK ha ha.. well my r3 needs a rebuild and im realy considering ev conversion.
Some extra air in the front left tyre will do the trick. I've actually seen that fix a dead ignition switch. I mean, that's what we did before the problem resolved itself so on a causality chain that's all we had to run with.
hahaha, I do keep trying it - just to see if it starts working, I cleaned the bonnet - that has to work?
Could the overheating have damaged internal seals, then the addition of the water was the problem?
Yeah I had a similar thought, but would have expected perhaps some sparks and smoke if that had happened!
Bugger, I would focus on what has changed or been disrupted. So a second look at the connectors is the easy thing to start on. If everything else is working, maybe look at any safety interlock type inputs. And you might have to crack the inverter open to probe after the connector and check for coolant leaks, be careful of those capacitors though.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll figure it out.
Thanks James, just bought a 150kw stack so going balls deep to replace the inverter and upgrade at the same time... fingers crossed
@@SouthWestEVUK definitely keen for some detailed videos on that. Oh, could you weigh the components? There's no info anywhere on that. Actually a video just looking at the differences would be really good.
P.S. I finally started buying parts, got a Leaf contactor unit and some sample pouch cells on the way for a custom battery pack
Hi Dave! I doubt it's permanently damaged. However, I do believe the inverter doesn't want to turn on.. Is the DTC bit set in the 0x1DA message? Specifically,
if self.lastCanMsg.data[6] & 0xB0:
invertFault = True
If that bit is set, then the inverter will 'chat' away, but never turn on. I'm not sure if sending the CAN message to clear the codes, or if removing 12 volts (both the switched and the 'always on') clears it, but one of those should get you back in operation.. Those inverters are pretty tough.. In any case, rooting for you! I'm sure you'll get it figured out..
Hi! Wonder if there is a diagnostic that's triggered from the overheat event and as it was still there after a couple of ignition cycles, is now set permanently.
If so, in order to isolate the problem to software or hardware, next steps would be to clear all dtcs specific to the troublesome ECU (something along the lines of send 0xFF FF FF), or reflash the software. Which could need the manufacturer specific toolchain and relevant file. So unfortunately it may be easier to swap the hardware...
Hi - so I have removed the inverter now, I could power it up and see what the 1DA is saying again. I did power cycle the device and remove the permanent 12v also - no joy. Exciting though - as I have purchased the e+ 160kw inverter ;o)
@gkcl89 - perhaps, I do not use the leaf ECU, but the odd thing is the car drove home after breaking down. Which makes me believe perhaps a seal has broken and when I added water (in the cooling system) it has leaked onto a control board? All speculative, but live and learn, I pushed the boundaries with no cooling and got bitten.
@@SouthWestEVUK Very cool! We look forward to hearing how the 160KW goes!! Glad you're having fun.. :)
Could it be unrelated, and your arduino that remaps the throttle is malfunctioning/unplugged?
Hay, so I have mapped the throttle output to my little internal display, and it shows 0-100% as I push the pedal. I also monitored the torque requests to the inverter and they are all good. grrrrr.
Open it up and have a look inside.
yeah - it is going to start getting messy!
@@SouthWestEVUK bring the thunder 🙂
Sorry no helpful advice, just loads of sympathy.
Sympathy is greatly received, im in a right grump
