About this video:
The weather is getting a bit more spring like with less possibility of frost so I went ahead and planted up some spring containers. I love to use perennials in containers. I find this a great way to stretch the gardening budget. Where annuals are bought and grown for a short period of time, perennials can be used in containers, then later planted in the garden to enjoy for years to come. I also share with you my recipe for a hummingbird syrup. Its easy to make and my hummies love it! Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b) #spring #plantingplants #springporch
Hi Gardening Friends! I realized I hadn't linked the Alaska Bloom Fertilizer. If anyone is looking for it, you can find it here: amzn.to/4bioPPC Thank you so much for watching, and happy gardening! -Steph 🌱
The hummingbird shot was so lovely, thank you George for hooking up the GoPro to catch it. Steph, your front porch pots do look like Claus Dalby had done it himself. So pretty! Well done.
Steph your porch pots are gorgeous, so vibrant & cheery. Such a sweet hummingbird , my feeder is full & I’m anxiously waiting for that first sighting thanks for sharing
Steph, the porch its look fabulous! The hummingbird likes you.
The porch containers are so pretty. Stunning tulips and daffodils in the pink peachy hues. Your excitement on hummingbird cuttings is so cute ! Those little birds are magic 😍
I'm in Montana, and my first ones showed up April 25. I fill 5 feeders because none of my flowers that they like are blooming yet. I grew zinnias for the first time last year, and the hummingbirds were all over them. They also like sunflowers, which I never knew. I love hummingbirds. Been feeding them for about 10 years now.
Love all the pots cascading down the steps. The colors and different pot styles is really pretty. I love other's tulips, but can't invest the heart and time for such a short lived pay off. So thank you for letting me enjoy yours. I don't put anything out, but I have humming birds every year in my backyard for the 52 years I have been in my house.
Great job Steph. They look wonderful. Claus would be proud.
Awww thank you so much Colleen 💚
Hi Steph, you know I was thinking now that I’m retired, I am appreciating the small things. Love playing in my garden everyday
It's so nice to hear anyone say on any day they they feel grateful and content - the garden is a peaceful place and your gardens are gorgeous and I love your container arrangement. Thanks for sharing~
It’s Saturday Morning and what a delight to see a video loaded❤️.
Love the peaceful planting with Bird choir.
Happy Weekend to you all.
Your porch is so inviting.
Your front steps are looking beautiful! I’m doing a mix of annuals and perennials in my containers this year, too. I really enjoy your videos! 🌸
I used your recipe for hummingbird feeder that you put up last year, and my Husband saw a hummingbird yesterday!
Yay!!! 💚
I am in NC and saw my first hummingbird 2 weeks ago. I do make the syrup for my little friends.
Gorgeous entrance!!!!!!
Thank you so much 🥰
@@HookedandRooted you are very welcome!!!! Love your house, the gardens and your videos. Very informative, spontaneous and creative. Thank you!!!! I'm in love with the Japanese Maples.... All your plants are beautiful...
Yes!, my first sighting here was yesterday (May 2nd) but today I was ready for him with camera and their syrup, lovely
Waiting for my hummers to arrive any day now!
Your porch looks stunning! I have seen humming birds on my feeders. I’m in the far north of New Bedford.
Hi Steph , ur porch with those beautiful flowers and well arranged pots …. Reminded me of Claus Dalby front porch . ❤. Everything looks so lush. Thanks for the lovely video.
Thank you so very much for your kind words. I just love Clauses arrangements 🌱
I buy mostly perennials
I do have a few short lived perennials that I love and replace every few years.
Annuals I also have a few I buy that I just love.
Dianthis is one of my favorites..
Steph, you added just the right amount of potted plants on the porch for a stunning impact! Thanks for the close up look of the hummingbird at the feeder, George.
Your porch flowers are gorgeous & I like the advice of using perennials. Thank you.
Beautiful pots! Such a great idea to use perennials. Because of you and George, I just purchased my first Japanese maple. I believe the variety is Harvest Moon (or something like that 😊)Have a beautiful weekend in the garden
Steph your porch pots are stunning 😍 love your hummer too
Your flowers in the pots are gorgeous, great combination, yes I am zone 7a,we are way ahead of you in the season. Hummingbirds,Bluebirds Thanks 🌿🍃
It’s amazing how different plants react in different countries. I’m planting voila and pansies in our autumn/fall and they will flower through to spring. The pots on the front porch look amazing. Cheers 🇦🇺 Bronwyn
Thank you so much, Bronwyn! It is so fun to see how plants react differently in different places 🌱
My first hummer showed up mid March. I put out 2 feeders for them and numerous flowers that they love. So exciting every year when they show up!1
Hi Stef🌺 . Your porch looks stunning with these pretty containers flowers . I have also alot of containers with amazing flowers at the entrance of the house on the stairs . The beautiful hummingbird bird .I have tecoma the yellow flowers in my garden and its flowers attract the hummingbirds wonderfully also
the jasmine plants .Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺
I literally just heard a hummingbird this evening while cleaning up in the garden! I’m in northern Utah. 🌸
Beautiful pots! And the hummingbird visit was to exciting! I gave up on feeding birds and got rid of all my supplies. Couldn't handle all the deer and squirrel interference. They were costing me a fortune. But I might get a hummingbird feeder. I have the perfect spot for one! The camera was a great idea!
Your planters and flowers really set off your porch! No hummers, yet. I do the same hummer food recipe as you...I wish stores would stop selling the red-colored nectar. Thank you for your video and content..always a joy to watch your videos.❤
Thank you so much Teresa! I hope your hummies show up soon!
Very pretty colour in your porch!
Love your porch pots. I will follow your example and use more perennials in my pots. Thanks
Beautiful, beautiful pot arrangements!!!
I had my first Hummingbird today in Fall River, I marked it on my calendar! I also make the sugar/water mix for them. Love all the colors in those pots!
How fun! Great idea to document the date 📅
Your front porch looks beautiful.
Yes Steph I am in Bridgewater and saw our first hummingbird a week ago within minutes of puting out the feeder. Your front steps look fabulous!!
Sharing all your beautiful flowers and your beautiful containers you have put together so pretty
Thank you so much 😊
The porch plantings look very pretty❤️❤️❤️
Just lovely, Steph! Thank you for taking us along! ❤ xo
Thanks so sharing all your beautiful planters and your hummingbirds feeder
Love your arrangement💕💕💕
Hi Steph I winter sowed all three of these plants and can't wait to see them bloom!!
Love the set up and use of perrenials and winter sown plants❤ And the use of new watering can 😉
Love little hummingbirds, thanks for reminder to get my syrup out 🤓
Omg I'm loving this color show! The tulips is a waste in the South but I'll enjoy yours❤️It's so vibrant , and beautiful, it makes me so happy! ❤
That’s so cool with the hummingbird. Thank you!!
You are my new favorite plant and garden guru. Your maple tree garden with the rock path still knocks me out. I loved this new vlog because I am using a lot more containers this year--a dicey hip makes it hard to kneel down and dig in the dirt.
Great Video, Steph. Your containers are such a colorful addition to the porch. Just filled two of my hummingbird feeders yesterday but have not had a sighting yet. Loved the footage of your happy hummingbird getting a drink. Thank you for capturing such a beautiful glimpse of nature.
Thank you for this video. I can't wait to have a garden to plant flowers and vegetables in. You make it look easy. I am definitely learning a lot! Take care God bless you and your family. 😊❤
I bought a lot at that sale it’s not often you can get a 2.5 qt plant for 5 bucks. I even had to go to the next town over they had an even better selection.
Beautiful container arrangement!!! 🤗💙🌹
Your planters are stunning. I've made the same hummingbird syrup recipe for years. I now simmer it with half a cup of water, remove it from the heat and then add half a cup of cold water. It takes a little less time to cool down.
Love the porch design with perennials and enjoy the bird song in your video. Good job !😊
Still waiting to see a hummingbird in 7a! Yes, I make my own syrup! Love your porch selection of plants!
Hi. Your garden is such a peaceful place, thanks for sharing. I would love to know your favorite nurseries. I think the secret to coral bells is finding the right spot because they are low maintenance. Mine have survived for years in the front of the border on the east side of the house. I would love to see more native gardens. Thank
Cheerful, welcoming front stoop! Love the pot arrangement ❤
Thank you so much!!
I absolutely love this area, it’s exactly what I do and enjoy every year 💞 I start my pansy seeds in December here in the UK and they are blooming when I put them out for spring then I put them under my trees and let them self seed 🥰 I would love to see Hummingbirds x
Utterly beautiful thank you 😍💚🇦🇺
We had our first hummingbirds May 1st. So excited to see our little friends back. Our feeders had been out for a week, ready to welcome them home for the summer.
Central Iowa
I love it!! Such a welcome site, seeing our bird friends return.
dianthus is such a rock star. I bought a six pack of it from a big box store last year and it came back HUGE. I'm thrilled!
Have not seen Hummingbirds yet . I make the same Syrup for them as you do but like to use the organic sugar because that’s what I have on hand . I usually put 3 feeders out , looking forward to their arrival. Planters look lovely
Last year I grew those black pansies from Bakers creek, surprisingly they lasted all summer, they were blooming in December, and I’m in zone 8a Atlanta, Ga were we have very hot humid days and nights.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and the hummingbirds live here year round. I make my own syrup and I don't even heat it on the stove, I just use hot water from the tap and it melts the sugar. They love the feeders.
All those containers looks so stunning and gorgeous. Yes the humming birds have shown up in my area. I am on the west coast of BC, Canada. Actually we have 2 humming birds that stay for the winter so I have them all year round.
So fun!!
Yes hummingbirds in Maryland, I use 1 cups of sugar 4 cups of boiling water. Flower pots are beautiful
Steph, I’ve always bought the red hummingbird food but will make it from now on! Thanks for the recipe. Love your channel.
You are so welcome, Marilyn! It is so easy to make. Hope your hummingbird friends love it! Thank you so much!
I do have a few hummingbirds now, just love them. Your porch is gorgeous🌷
Beautiful pots and yard
I absolutely love your porch pots Steph! They are so beautiful!! I have also had my mind on making some hummingbird syrup for my feeders so perfect timing!
Thanks so much Devon! Its so easy, my visiting hummies love it, at least I think so since they always come back for more. Sometimes even 2 at a time getting territorial over it 💚
🪴Fantastic🪴
Pansies look so good
And the entire arrangement!
Greetings from Oklahoma!
Thank you very much!
Your porch looks beautiful.
Garden Moxie sent me over 😁 and I’m so glad she did. Your flower pots are stunning. I make my own hummingbird sugar water, too using the same recipe. I live in Virginia and I’ve seen one hummingbird fly by, stop, and hover-but I didn’t have my feeder up. 😩 So, I hope he/she returns again soon!
Hi there! Welcome to my channel, happy to have you here. Sue (Garden Moxie) is great and has such a beautiful garden. I hope your hummingbirds visit you again soon now that your feeder is up.
I’ve been talking about them coming soon I’m in Indiana. I have a ball jar in the garage fridge with food I made up for the hummingbirds it even has a label made that has hummingbird food on it. I absolutely love them!!!!
Love hummingbirds I have 5 feeders lots of hummingbirds Enjoy your videos will be planting some perrenials in my planters this year love the idea thank you
You go Girl! Awesome and inspiring video. What a welcome home those flowers offer. Great job!
Thank you so much!🥰
My hummers showed up awhile ago love them so much my favorite bird they fly back and fourth from my neighbor house across the street to mine it’s funny same birds with to set of names that Jan and I gave them lol your porch is beautiful love your choices of pots and colors you chose to go with.
I recently purchased three pots. One large and two small, all the same design. Instead of my usual big black urns, I think I will try these pots on my front steps this year. Thanks Steph for the inspiration!
That sounds lovely Debbie! Enjoy 🌱💚
🌺🌼Hi, So Beautiful! Looks so inviting and gives us all ideas for our porches! I love Spring and so ready for it! Garden work makes me feel so accomplished in my day! The birds sound so amazing! Thank you Steph for showing us your talents. Have a sweet day!
So lovely, you did a beautiful job on your porch. So inviting, I want to sit with you and have a glass of lemonade. Yes we have our hummingbird friends. They arrived May 2nd, they were early this year. We use the same formula as you and our feeder is red with yellow drinking cups. We live in Rochester New York. Thankyou for your content. Charlene
That sounds lovely! I love lemonade. How fun that your hummingbird friends have already arrived. Thank you so much for your kind words, and for watching 💚
Yes we had our first 3 hummmingbirds last Sunday!!! So excited to see them again. I have 5 feeders so I use 8 cups of water to 2 cups of sugar. Same ratio as yours. Great video. Your porch pots are gorgeous 🌺🌹🌸
Yes, I live in south central PA and I had my first Hummingbird earlier in the week. Also the Baltimore Orioles are back. It is exciting how close the Hummingbirds will come when you are near the feeder or out among your flowers in the garden.
So fun Peggy! I love our bird friends 💚
They visit me throughout the year here in the Bay Area and it’s a delight of my day ❤ Your flowers are gorgeous ❤
So wonderful to have them visit year round 💚 Thank you so much!
Love your beautiful entry pots; I agree that perennials are great in planters and a bonus is that so many are very early bloomers that can take the frosts. That Autumn Joy sedum is very easy to propagate from any stem; I usually pot up any that have broken during replanting and they root quite readily. Your raised bed garden looks so inviting and I imagine you are looking forward to planting in it. Great video!
Lovely display
Hummingbird showed up 10 days ago. Live in Washington State, zone 6.
Love your pots on your front porch, look forward to your videos ❤
Steph, those planters & the plants you chosed are gorgeous. The steps look like an english garden.❤
Thank you so much Bren 💚
Your front porch looks amazing!
Thank you so much Laura 💚
Greeting's from Ireland, Great video and lovely garden, I had two pots of lovely sedum autumn joy a few years ago but one day I went to tidy them up and to my horror the stalks came up from the root's and low and behold under further investigation I discovered garden weevil grubs having a right feast. I have a lot of perennial pot's of flower's and I use garden vine weevil nematode's in spring and autumn and it put's manner's on them.
I’ve got three words for ya-Gor-Gee-Ous! That describes your front porch containers! Splendid job, and I love how you grew or transplanted your own treasures. Continued blessings..
Yes, I saw a hummingbird about a week ago at my nemesia that is planted in a container with some alyssum. I'm planning on making some food for the feeder this weekend. I don't have any place quite so close to a window, but near enough when I sit on my screened in porch.
BTW, I love your front porch planters.
The pots are stunning Steph! 🥰
Thank you so much Mary!! 🥰
❤❤❤❤❤ beautiful garden
Love your porch pots I also plant perennials in mine I don’t do annuals to short lived. I am in 9B zone and it gets in the 80’s starting in April.
I love the flowers on the porch. i think this year i may try some perennials in the pots/ love that idea. I have been waiting for my first hummingbird siting nothing yet, i am IN zone 5 usually I usually see them by May 1. anxiously waiting and I also make my own hummingbird feed. Love this time of year! thanks for sharing. Genie :)

You do such an amazing job! Absolutely beautiful! You’ve inspired me to try! I LOVE flowers and have been educating myself on how to plant them properly. I was a little in, but seeing your beautiful flowers makes me excited to try. Thank you for sharing
