How much profit was the airport making compared to selling the land with all its tax payer funded infrastructure for thousands of houses.

Time and time again, Government talk the talk, then do nothing. This typifies this Conservative Government in all things. Promise everything, deliver NOTHING.

Sad fact of the matter is the sheer difficulty of running an airport profitably. In East Kent the nearest airport is a 1.5 hour drive (2+ hour by train) but there simply isn't the demand for anything nearer. Many, many people have tried and failed.

I'm from Donny, and this is a very sad state of affairs. I understand the concerns about financing it, but he is right to say that hopes were raised when the government said they would prevent it's closure.
Doncaster is set to become a City, the Queen gave us that honour this year and it's been a long long time wanted. We need investment more than anything. Investing in the airport when there is nothing to come to Doncaster for obviously isn't going to work, but NOT investing in the airport gives an even more horrible portent. Real concern that there won't be any investment in our city, that not even the industry we have is valuable enough to be worth saving. And that will only fuel the tendency of my kith and kin to blindly vote labour and socialism, and perpetuate their distrust of the power of capitalism. Doncaster needs Capitalism, because we have to start believing that we can grow to great heights, that we are worth something.
The truth is, Peel group have every right to be self serving and concerned about their pockets and profits, and if they spoke publicly about how they tried everything and nothing is working, I'd accept it. If they reached out to investor after investor, and no-one wanted the burden, it'd hurt but I'd accept it. But it just seemed they could have done so much more. The local support is immense, but Peel have been intentionally deaf. Doncaster deserves better.

So when airports closed during lockdowns and countries closed their borders and there were less tourists, it wasn't because of covid. You should try buy an airport and close it for a year and see how much money you lose.

A link road from the M18 to the Airport has been constructed, at great public expense.
A Railway Station has been designed, and a link to Doncaster's main railway station has been surveyed. (When it was the old RAF Finningley, the RAF Engineers would assemble a temporary station, their would then be a roughly 2 mile walk to the Runway).
    Their are 3 Runways on the site, 2 x 4,199 feet, 1 x 6,004 feet.
Finningley was a Vulcan Bomber Base in its past. It was a diversion base for the Space Shuttle at one time.
    ****
From Junction 6 to Junction 1 of the M18 it is now just massive Warehouses.
Even the Rossington Main Colliery site near junction 3, has been cleared, and Warehouses built on it.
    ****
Peel, clearly intend to dig up the Runways, and build Warehouses on the site.
Doncaster City Council must immediately slap a preservation order on the Runways.
All South Yorkshire MP's and the Mayor of South Yorkshire, must press the Government to Compulsory purchase the Air Port site.
    ***
Maybe, even put an RAF Museum on the site, dealing with the history of Britain's Strategic Independent Nuclear Deterrent.
Avro Vulcan B2 XH558 is already there.
Bring the Handley Page Victor XL231 from Elvington near York.
Add an English Electric Canberra (WK163 on site, but dismantled) & the cockpit of a Vickers Valiant (? XD826 is for sale) (only 1 intact aircraft still exists).
Maybe even a decommissioned Royal Navy Polaris A-3 Missile.
Maybe they could build a fake Resolution class SSBN, or just to the waterline.

Peel, closed the Sheffield City Airport, after Sheffield City Council had sold it to them for £1.
Their is now a Boeing plant (making micro electric actuators that power the Wing slats) on the site, and the Runway was dug up.

Nicholas Fletcher, Conservative MP for Don Valley, is currently putting the case for keeping open Doncaster airport.
He has put forward a well researched and convincing case.
The owners want to sell the airport and build houses on the site.
Selling transport infrastructure is not levelling up.
Covid, hit passenger numbers very hard.
Once this airport is gone - it's gone.
South Yorkshire needs a vision of an integrated transport hub. It's not just about passenger numbers but also the potential for cargo, the postal services and the vital concentration of emergency services at the site. A longer-term vision is needed.
    Homes can be located elsewhere.
Another example of short-term financial gain over long-term public benefit.
Keep the airport and improve the local public transport infrastructure connecting it.

I live in Doncaster. We've just become a city!! And we've just lost our ex-RAF base Robin Hood Airport. How's that for a first!! But from what I understand, Peel Holdings have been asked for their books and something strange seems to have hit the fan. Just saying. I heard it from a friend.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is 30 miles from East Midlands, 30 miles from Leeds-Bradford and 45 miles from Manchester. It's not all that far from Liverpool, Teesside or Birmingham either. That's a lot of airports within a 100 mile radius. It's also close to the junctions of the M1, the A1 and the M62, making it easy to get to most of these other airports within an hour or two. Also, an airport where hundreds of times more people were flying out and back in again than the other way round isn't as economically valuable as it could be, especially given the pollution caused. How many airports can our present economy sustain? Not as many as we have.

  • @johnboy9851
    @johnboy9851 2 года назад +1

The airport has been haemorrhaging money throughout its existence. The projection for the next 5 years was a loss of £45 million, and its already heavily subsidised. It's not a viable concern, and we cannot keep dead ducks like this going. It's sad as I've flown from this airport many times. But the next phase looks bright to repurpose the airport to be a logistics hub, which could be the best option. It's actually quite refreshing that the owners have taken this step knowing it's not profitable and to not take more money from the taxpayer.
