Make no mistake Sheffield City Airport did not fail because of its size. It’s runway was bigger that London City. It failed because Peel Airport made it fail as they did a back handed with Sheffield Council to buy the land for £1 with the agreement that if the airport failed they could make it into a business park. They did this bought Finningly made it Doncaster Robin Hood and sold the lot. What they did was criminal absolutely criminal!

It's testament to the lack of foresight and abilities of the city fathers who perennially run Sheffield City Council. All too often ideas, projects and developments have been no more than an 'artist's impression' on the front page of the Sheffield Star, before becoming yet another unrealised dream. Cities all around Sheffield seemingly forge ahead with their ideas to a finished realisation, leaving England's fourth largest city trailing ever distant. We are the largest city in Europe without an airport - and also a TV station if it comes to that. When it comes to projects outside London, nowhere outside of the 'holy trinity' of Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester are considered. Sheffield truly is THE largest village in the world. Many years back - even as far as the 20's - the idea of Sheffield having an airport has been proposed, a site at Todwick was considered. And I remember it being mooted sometime ago, that had an airport been built when it was first considered, it would be bigger than Manchester Airport now, who knows.... One thing I do know - and I say this as a Sheffielder born and bred - the only way SCC could link themselves to an airport, is to hang on to Doncaster's coat tails and try and claim the illusion and kudos of being an 'airport city', much to the chagrin - I imagine - of the good burghers of Doncaster. In my opinion Robin Hood DSA has nothing to do with Sheffield, and everything to do with Doncaster. It's their airport. Still, at least we can console ourselves that each and every one of us in Sheffield, has five trees each.

The same thing happened to Ellyson Field, Pensacola Naval Air Station, where my dad trained radio operators during WWII. I visited 5 years ago, the control tower still stands, the hangars are factories, the barracks are offices. After over 70 years, you can still tell what the runways and taxiways were.

I live in New York and there's an airport close to me called Stewart International Airport the unfortunately seems to be heading this way. Not because of expansion issues, it has a REALLY long runway, but due to the pandemic and the fact some airlines have pulled out from Stewart. It used to have a flight to Fort Lauderdale Florida with jetblue that my family would use all the time to visit my grandparents who lived there, but jetblue pulled out. So, if you want to see Stewart, I recommend going now because I fear it wont be around for too much longer.

Flip I remember when Sheffield city airport opened. BA operated flights from Belfast on a JS41. Your right, it was just at the time that low cost air travel was starting to take off, with EasyJet and Ryanair beginning to make their mark. The runway length was always going to be an issue though. I would love to go and the remains of it. I’m sure it’s strange seeing the older terminal and control tower. ✈️

I used to live in Sheffield. Within an hour or so you had Manchester, Leeds and East Midlands all established. Sheffield City was never going to work. You also had at least 3 - 4 GA airports or landing strips within the Sheffield region (including Nottingham). Sheffield City was never going to work with so much competition within such a short distance. Even your home base of Gamston, which I used many times was another possibility.

There were plans to open an airport in Sheffield since the 1940s. Norton airfield was the original site proposed. This received support from the Sheffield City Council. There was a story in the Star during the 1950s.

Passed there a few hours ago. My parents flew to Amsterdam when it was open, but as you state it was far too restricted to ever be a serious contender for other facilities. While it was an operating commercial airport it was very convenient. My partner I lived a 10 minute taxi ride from it and We used to fly from it to Schipol when we were going to The Netherlands. My parents went to The USA via Sheffield/Schipol and I know people who flew to South Africa via Schipol. They did try domestic flights to London but it couldn’t compete with MML train services, city centre to city centre.

As a Sheffielder myself I can't help but be disappointed by Sheffield's airport situation. Like so much else, Sheffield just doesn't seem to get the investment it needs, having to compete with the nearby Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham.
For such a large city in such a central location in the UK it really is done a disservice much of the time, and the lack of a decent transport connection from Sheffield to Leeds Bradford or Doncaster, Manchester often ends up being the default airport of choice, at least having a direct albeit not always particularly reliable rail service.

The run way could have been extended into the wasteland and the road could have gone underneath, the run way wasn’t directed towards the M1.
The wasteland was part of an old railway goods yard. The planes generally took off and headed over catcliffe. I worked close by and walked around the area very often in my lunch break. I used the airport for a trip to Amsterdam and Belfast City. It made perfect sense.

I've lived in Sheffield for nearly 40 years, and I was surprised when the airport was announced. At first it sounded exciting, but then I read about the restrictions that would apply and it was obvious (to me) that it would never be successful. There's no real tradition of aviation in Sheffield, and I think you need that to support a successful airport. Manchester and Leeds Bradford both have some history going back to the 1930s, and I think that was a help in building them up in recent decades. Sheffield City Airport was just someone's bright idea which, like a lot of bright ideas, had some fundamental problems.

I realise the cost involved at Sheffield was probably why the idea to do that never got anywhere, not enough traffic to justify it.....

I cannot believe its been closed so long and changed so little. I started earning my private pilots license there in around 2005, turning up once a month until it closed. I've not been up there since, but seeing the runway now mostly gone but the apron intact is quite weird indeed. Ultimately I ended up continuing my ppl at Doncaster, and moving from the tiny runway (it can't have been much bigger than the runways of many private airstrips) of Sheffield to landing little Cessna 152s on the great big thing that built for the nuclear bombers was an adjustment for sure.

Similar story for Dundee airport. 1400m runway, no radar coverage etc, restricted space for expansion etc. This demonstrates what could be possible however if enough investment was made to attract airlines. As it is, currently just 2 services operating to London City and Belfast, both at sadly small passenger numbers. FlyBe even cited the reason of no radar as the reason they withdrew the short-lived only ever international service to Amsterdam Schiphol, which ironically was extremely popular. Owners HIAL take note please before it's too late.

I don’t agree that it is sad. I think it is great to see that real estate that became “obsolete” is being repurposed instead of demolishing it and putting part of it in landfills.

A shame they couldn't have kept it as a flight club and school training airport, perhaps with light aircraft maintenance businesses. Land is valuable though, so Peel will be making more profit from property rent.

As an operator of a local airfield I went to a planning meeting where a resident complained about the potential pollution from aircraft but ignored the steel works and M1 traffic.
Also he claimed there may have been a problem with local shift workers being disturbed by the aircraft arriving and departing!?
Pilots hated the short runway and frequent crosswinds.
A number of private owners considered it but it was too restrictive in too many ways - runway ,hours of availability, lack of hangarage, etc.
Add in the actual real demand and it was never going to be a success
Its construction was a political decision as Sheffield was the largest city in Europe without its own airport.

The airport closed in 1998 when oslo gardemoen airport opened which is still the main oslo airport

The £1 price tag was agreed with Sheffield City Council BEFORE the place was built.
"If the airport is NOT a success, you can have the land for £1."
Now, if Im not mistaken, that's an incentive to intentionally make an airport fail. Because then you get a vast piece of development land.... for £1.
