Claude - a pair of piano waltzes for Debussy

  • I wrote this through-composed pair of waltzes for solo piano using elements of Debussy's style - pentatonic washes, unresolved dissonance - and even a direct lift from that ragtime piece that has a name that would probably get me banned from RUclips. You know the one. (See the staccato descending left hand pattern around 2'55.)
    But mainly, it sits in the distinctly French jazz language that Debussy no doubt influenced but probably didn't hear much of in his lifetime. (I've been learning to play jazz in the Django style lately.) With elements of Chopin probably - there's an excellent ‪@NahreSol‬ video on whether Chopin was a jazzer which probably subconsciously birthed this piece.
    The first waltz is melancholy in nature, but the second would be quite happy on a piano accordion.
