Exactly! I'm an engineer and when working in aerospace I worked on rocket hardware that we coated with teflon for lubrication of moving parts. I know the properties, and like you said, all teflon coatings wear out - it's the nature of the material. With pans, there is no magic about the application of the coating pattern: smooth, dimpled, hex , whatever! The key to longevity is a) proper manufacture in the first place and b) user care during use - avoid high heat, avoid metal scrapers, practice proper cleaning. I've tried expensive pans - All-Clad was junk and very pricey. Tried to get warrantly replacement and they said no, the failure was your fault. About 7 years ago I bought some Vollrath pans (aluminum pan with teflon coating). They've actually performed very well and I continue to use them to this day. High price and paid celebrity spokesman doesn't make the pan great. I recall a tv commercial for some nonstick pan with an unusual pattern (not sure if it was Hexclad) that even said their special pattern would make food taste better - I laughed and laughed and laughed at that outright lie.

My biggest worry is why they applied a non-stick coating on the outside of the pan? I have a gas stove and i can just imagine what fumes it can produce everytime the bottom is burned and id like to stay away from this.
Also no non-stick coatings last a lifetime. Any coatings in fact. Solid material - yes. Coatings - no. They know themselves very well that a non-stick coating wears off, if it wasn't - they wouldn't need a honeycomb design to protect it. Protect it from accidental scratches, but if you dont babysit the pan and place it daily in a dishwasher - the coating will be destroyed fast

I bought a small hexclad piece in 2020. I’m fine with it, but it’s not the best non-stick pan I’ve owned. I later purchased a wok from another company from Korea that also has a laser-etched design, is also lightweight, and also is hybrid non-stick/stainless steel. It was much less expensive and cooks far, far better than my little hex-clad pan. I love that wok. My husband even loves the wok, and he hates pretty much every other piece of cookware available on the market (he hates the hex-clad pan). We use that wok and three cast-iron pans at home. That’s it.
Now, as for PFAS, in particular PTFE (which is the product that Hex-Clad uses for its non-stick surface), sadly, it honestly doesn’t matter. Polymers are in almost everything we touch in daily life. Your computer circuit board? PTFEs. Your iPhone charger? PTFEs. You use Gore-Tex products when skiing or cycling? ePTFEs. Your car? PTFEs. Valve oil for your saxophone? PTFEs. Surgical devices and other medical equipment? PTFEs. Your plumbing? PTFEs. Your laser printer? PTFEs. Factories where your food is processed? PTFEs. YOUR FUCKING DENTAL FLOSS? MADE WITH PTFEs. I could go on, and I haven’t even started with PET, HDPE, LDPE, PVC and other plastics. Like Elvis, it’s everywhere.

Can they sue a Canadian citizen in civil court? Would they attempt to extradite you? I can imagine them petitioning a high court judge for extradition papers: "Your Honor, we need to sue him in the USA because he called my client's pans garbage." Any judge would toss the lawyers right out.

  • @philipstaite4775
    @philipstaite4775 4 месяца назад +10

Jed, I'm sure lawyers would pick apart your statements and separate opinion (eg. "...is garbage...") from fact (eg "...will fail...") I'm sure once they do that Hexclad's lawyers will see they have an uphill, probably insurmountable, battle trying to make their case. They are probably just doing damage control (which is actually kind of a compliment to you, that you have enough of an impact to get noticed!) and trying to bluff you.
I'm an engineer, multiple college degrees and 38+ years of experience. Long before I ever saw/heard your opinion on the product I formed my own opinion on it. That is, at the end of the day it is just another non-stick.
It has a neat design trick of raised metal ridges to somewhat protect the non-stick coating from physical damage from utensils. From a design standpoint it is an interesting balance - enough protection to nominally allow use of metal utensils without immediate noticeable damage, but not so much metal exposed that it becomes a sticking problem. However, even those thin metal ridges will wear down, and through normal use utensils will still make contact with the non-stick coating (just less often). The net result is that their design trick will improve the longevity of the non-stick surface, but only so much.
As for the non-stick coating itself, maybe they have a variation on the typical non-stick compounds, maybe that improves its physical toughness and chemical longevity, or maybe not. It appears to be an "in family" formula. They are not claiming that their coating is completely different than other non-stick, even admit it has PTFE in it. If it was something completely new and different, it probably would have taken a long time to get FDA approval - and they would no-doubt be marketing it as a "breakthrough" or otherwise trying to distance it from other non-stick. (eg. how ceramic coated cookware does)
Well, good luck, and if any of Hexclad's lawyers happen to be reading this - I don't own any Hexclad, never have, never will. (at least any non-stick). My stance on this is based on my own reasoning (as outlined above) and was formed before I ever saw/heard Jed's take on it. Even if Jed had said "This stuff is great!" I wouldn't be looking to buy it - I'm just no-longer interested in non-stick, period. Heck, Gordon Ramsay says "This stuff is great!" and I'm still not interested.

To me, the Hexclad design looks less even trust worthy. I would never go back to non-stick, but if I had to I would rather use a traditional non-stick and plastic spoon/spatula. The way that hexclad is essentially just a bunch of little pockets of nonstick surface, it looks like there's a lot more possible failure points for the coating to come loose than on a traditional non-stick.

A RUclipsr that doesn't take sponsorships (withheld because the lawyers are definitely watching this video and probably in comments, too. Hi!) also did a cookware video on non-stick pans. Hex Clad was soft in the areas you'd expect and scratched down to bare metal similarly to other poorly performing PTFE nonstick cookware when scratched with a metal pick (#3 hardness). Hex Clad probably lasts longer than a cheap PTFE pan lifetime or two, but it's clearly not metal safe.

However, in the U.S., Hexclad's claim would be considered laughable. It's tantamount to a film producer sending a cease-and-desist letter to a movie reviewer who gave his film a bad review. Hexclad's only possible argument -- and it's not a good one -- could be that you are serving as a de facto agent for Hexclad's competitors. This could be argued -- probably unsuccessfully -- if you do not carry Hexclad's products in your stores (and I don't know if you do). Thus, the argument could be that you are using your RUclips presence to steer consumers away from Hexclad and toward the products you carry. I don't see that argument being ultimately successful, but I could see them at least getting a foot in a courtroom door with that argument.

In the end, you get what you pay for and you can buy Hexclad, but know it is simply a longer lasting non-stick, but it has a shelf-life like Ceramic non-stick does too. I just got a 100 dollar non-stick outdoor 'cast iron' pan ie its coated, but had some toxin free coating (forgot what they called it). It works good, but if I throw it out in 5 years I am ok with that. I also bought a 20 dollar non-stick 8 inch pan for frying eggs and bacon. I didn't like the 8 inch so I returned it in the 30 day window. I would rather have a pre-seasoned steel or cast iron 8 inch pan.

I just buy a new 30 euro non-stick pan every 3-4 years. I’ve come to accept that non-stick pans are a disposable item. They will wear out, either through scratches or thermal degradation/delamination (so I got it too hot, or repeated heat cycles cause enough fatigue (teflon and metal heat up and cool down at different rates) that the coating disintegrates).
And that’s still cheaper than buying hexclad.

You will never beat a cast iron pan that's been well seasoned. They will last for generations, but you must take care and season them after every use. Which is a fairly easy process. However any non stick coating is just that a coating that will and does wear through causing it to no longer be non stick.this wear can be speeded up by the use of the wrong type of utensil whilst in use. Go buy non stick pans if you can justify replacing them more often than the traditional cast iron product. With cast iron all you need is to wipe out with a kitchen cloth and while still hot is wipe in a natural oil product. Leave to cool then wash as normal and dry immediately.

Good on you for getting sued. I've been cringing at the hexclad use on television since the product was introduced. Watching cooks sear off over high heat and use metal utensils in these pans during production, I'm surprised there hasn't been a lawsuit over the misrepresentation of their product.
When asked if their pans can withstand high heat cooking, their response is "You'll get the same results on medium heat as other pans will get on high." That does not address safety, and they do this, because it is NOT safe and they don't want to say the quiet part out loud. More importantly while they hide information deep in their website that says metal utensils will scratch the coating off, they time and again showcase their products on TV being used with metal utensils.
This is DANGEROUS levels of misrepresentation that people are almost certainly getting cancer as a result of right now.
