- On this date, February, 9th, 51 years ago, 1964, The Beatles made their first American appearance playing live on The Ed Sullivan Show in front of an estimated television audience of 73 million Americans. Ed Sullivan introduced The Beatles, and was almost immediately drowned out by the screams of girls in the studio audience, many of them fainting. The Beatles continued to play twice that evening, and “Beatlemania” had officially arrived stateside. The exposure of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 became a touchstone event for an entire generation and for music lovers everywhere.
Never before had so many viewers tuned-in to a live television program, which with an estimated 73 million viewers, was three-fourths of the total adult audience in the United States. A music group from England had never crossed over into American culture in such a way, and, at the time, it wasn't too common for a variety television show to book an English rock band. However, because Ed Sullivan traveled to England frequently, and had a great eye for talent, The Beatles caught his attention and earned a slot on his popular variety program on CBS.
Ed Sullivan had seen the crowds of Beatles fans at London Airport trying to catch a glimpse of the band on their way back from touring Sweden in 1963. Again in 1963, The Beatles and Ed Sullivan’s paths collided, when he personally witnessed another huge airport reception before The Beatles played the Royal Variety Show. It became incredibly clear that The Beatles had made quite an impact in England, and were ready to ignite teenagers in America with their catchy pop songs, adorable personalities and witty banter.
“I made up my mind that this was the same sort of mass hit hysteria that had characterized the Elvis Presley days.” With that, Ed Sullivan booked The Beatles American debut, which became a pivotal moment in American cultural history. In fact, many baby boomers still ask each other, “where were you when you heard The Beatles sing for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show?”

16 year old girls louder than a jet airplane, marvelous
Only six months before this they were playing my local dance hall---a tiny town in the middle of England. I was there. They had to make an escape from the screaming girls via the flat roof of the dance hall. Those really were the days!
was it good?
@@frederickbulsara8141 They were brilliant and very loud--for those days anyway, and Paul's bass was much more prominent than on record. An interesting fact is that the support group was a popular local band called Denny Laine and the Diplomats. Of course years later Denny would join McCartney in Wings. The drummer was Bev Bevan who went on to play in The Move and ELO.
@@kingstumble Cool. thanks for the detailed answer!
@Shoshanna You are a nutter. I actually knew Denny Laine. I was in a band that supported The Moody Blues many times. Funnily enough he once commented on my bass playing. He said it sounded like I was playing a tuba! (In my defence it was because my speaker had blown.) He would find you hilarious.
Really cool, mate. You're a lucky man.
Liverpool must be very proud of what they had produced. 10/10 to you.

Indeed! I am as an English person. But let’s also just appreciate them as humans! Whatever anyones from we’re all one
UK Los estafo a los 4 TAXMAN
The Beatles seemed like they really did not expect this greeting from the US.
They took the world by storm, the greatest band ever
Even the guys were going nuts. I dont think there will ever be a single person let alone 4 of them become as big as they were.
Michael Jackson did... Duh!
73 MILLION PEOPLE!!! That was like 40% of the US population at the time. The modern day Super Bowl can't even grab that much of the ratings.
The day my life totally changed... and millions of others as well.
A historic moment that will never happen again 2:02
And NOTHING has ever been the same since!!!
Just what the country needed as an antidote to the depression and shock around JFK's murder several months earlier.
Thank you Beatles.
biggest band ever
Who would have guessed that today, 57 years later (February 7, 2021) John would have been absent from our lives 40 years and 2 months minus 1 day, which is the length of time he lived from October 9, 1940 until December 8, 1980?
How my brain reacted automatically to the background music:
Intro starts.
"It's 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'."
No 'Oh' to start the song on beat three of the measure.
"It's 'Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand'."
No 'Oh' to start the song on beat four of the measure.
"It's an instrumental."
Its 2023 the Beatles recorded another song . ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
The Beatles have stated many times that this was a nonproductive period of their career. The audience was so loud that the band could not hear themselves. With sometimes 6 shows each week Lennon and McCartney were not writing. They did tour for several years but eventually quit and returned to the studio never to tour again.
Them they disbanded because they ran away from their roots, the stage. Not the studio
They were the best!😀
Those were the days!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
THE BEATLES UNFAIR TO BALD MEN
a sign says lol
💀💀💀💀
How dare they have full heads of hair!! 😂
BUT---someone made a fortune out of Beatle Wigs, even if they were crap ones.
I was there i couldnt stop screaming i was crying and i was even hiting stuff AAAAAAHAHHHHAHAHAHA
mustve been an awesome experience of a lifetime!
Juan Renteria lol how your ears feel?
@@bravesoul5743 What, to be part of the absurdity that ruined live Beatles shows and made them stop doing them?
Lively crowds, enthusiasm, even a bit if roudiness - it's what makes live music fun. But what happened to the Beatles is waaaay over the line and it perplexes me if I'm being honest. If this band was so universally adored, how would so many fans tolerate their live shows being completely spoiled by actual madness?
Is this why the Beatles are so overrated? Peopld were fanatics about the actual people in the band more than the music itself?
@@SquareNoggin how are you at parties?
Dear lord this is superb! A fan from the day they descended the plane steps in this footage (I was 16); I thought I'd seen it all, until this clip. this is the epitome of what it was. Super take on the plane taxi-ing in. And outstanding and best fan shots are in this. THANK YOU CBS!!

Wow
Happy all from Sofia Bulgaria and Sofia street.!
"England get out of Ireland" one of the signs says. Even politics were still at play during the Beatles arrival.
Funny how some americans especially in new york think they're irish yet none of us from ireland would ever associate ourselves with those fake irish fuckers

TAKE JUDE by APOLOGETIX a great Beatles parody
when beatles arrive in U.S elvis think he would have to stop singing
The Beatles were the beginning of the British Invasion. Record companies went to England and signed any band that looked and sounded like the Beatles. Popular American acts (the Everly Brothers for example) fell off the Top-10 and were replaced by British Groups.
WTF .... If I were one of the Beatles. I would turn around and get right back on that plane after announcing that we would return once every one pulled themselves together.
after / Kent State / Martin Luther King / the beatles
These were the classical fangirls and haters ever...
1964
Who noticed the anti Beatles signs at 1:46?
deaser92 a bunch of jealous men
Those man didn’t hate them, just jealous of their hair, I think.
One says "england out of ireland"
My mom rules cause this happened on her birthday the day the British Invasion landed one for the history books first
Folks
Would it ve worked if they were german or french? 😊
Are the similarities with "Triumph of the Will" more than just a coincidence? Maybe not ...
Was this seriously their first step in America as a band?
Yes.
George had been earlier to the states but for the band as a whole yes, it was
George visited his sister in Benton illinois in 1963.there is a large statue on the highway that commemorates the event.
Judging by those white sign placards it wasn't all a big welcome. "England get out of Ireland", "Beatles are unfair to bald men" and "Beatles are starving barbers". The England get out of Ireland thing I understand, but what were the other two placards about? Anyone from those days want to chime in? im too young! lol
Um, satire? Joking around? Having a josh about their "long" hair?
I am an army, but I have to admit that the beatles were a few levels above BTS in popularity. The problem was that their music agency failed to manage that level of fame.
One direction 60's
Yeah.....................................................
Not even close
Nah... they were bigger which is ironic bc they were 4 & 1D were 5 😂
Ahn... no
Me and my wife were at Heathrow airport a couple of years ago and one direction were flying out, i had never heard of them, and the woman checking them in hadn't a clue who they were either, i bet even the people in Tarzan's country had heard of the Beatles in those days.
I know this was a year ago but... not even close. 1D is considered a boy band. The Beatles, Legends.
