I'm a female, 62 years old and moved from health to CS. I'm currently looking for a CS analyst job in Melbourne. I'm loving being an old woman getting into a new field. As a psychologist, I have a lot of knowledge, regarding what people do and why and how the brain can lead us to do the impossible. Currently I'm studying Occupy the Web materials. Then I will get into Jon’s material. I' definitely identify as a pen tester. I think the same as Jon. If I won billions tomorrow, I’d still be looking for work in CS. Many thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I don't know why but I came across your comment today, the day I needed it the most. I am 39 and studying to be a Penetration Testing cert, the PNPT. I use a public library membership to do so. Everyday there are familiar faces, because many of the college kids come. I overheard one mocking me to another "he is still studying till 40". I really have been depressed all evening after that, but just now at the end of the day came across your wonderful story!

@@siddharthraychaudhuri7250 College kids have no idea what's coming for them once they're where you're at. There is absolutely nothing.. NOTHING.. wrong with what you're doing. Life happens to us every single day and majority of the time we have no control over it. Taking control the way you're doing is admirable. You're working on making a better life for yourself. Their opinions mean nothing. Hold the course and you will be successful. Ignore the haters. Focus. Stay on task. And don't stop until you're there.

David, I really enjoyed this interview. One of the beautiful aspects of your interviewing style is you let people talk. Sure, you have objectives for the discussion, but you don't let your ego drive the talk. Jon is exuberant about the topic and you all packed an incredible amount of information into this 83 minutes. I am dealing with some of the issues you all talked about and was reminded I need to learn more about the tools available. Thank you. Jon, I ordered the book. Looking forward to learning more.

I felt exactly the same way. I dropped out of college right before COVID, with only 1.5 semesters left. Within 2 years of dropping out, I was able to work my way up the I.T. food chain from level 1 tech support, to a "systems technician," and now a Cybersecurity Analyst. My only regret was not dropping out of school sooner. It's all about your work ethic, and attitude. A good employers doesn't want someone who knows everything, they want someone who has the ability to solve problems and figure out what they need to when it is needed

I can see what Jon is talking about because I have several security certifications, 4 years of IT experience, and I have been looking for a cyber job unsuccessfully for years. Companies just don't want to spend the money on security whether physical or cyber. They look at it as an expense rather than an investment in their own company but when they get hacked all of a sudden a cyber budget appears.

When you STOP looking for a job - a job will seek you - and then you START living.
If you're frustrated. Take the opportunity to step back, zen, deep dive, regroup and realign yourself with the reality in front of you.
If you are developing a natural/inherent skill - you are a "pipe under pressure";until YOU find , and, believe in yourself and your process.
It was clear when they asked the OP to write about basketball when in contrast to the position he applied for had no relation; they was testing the OP ability to think, and, ability to think outside the box- or in psychology- draw outside the "double yellow" paint. That firm was looking for new talent that had confidence.
Hey you were on the list 'selection list' at least. Regardless, self employed and happy is the way to go. Why wear an outfit when you can paint outside the lines when you "need to do so". That firm through you an off ball question - my guess they had a bigger role for you to fill - you wasn't prepared at that moment to think outside the box.
Real life conditions : you can NOT expect the expected.

Interesting to hear this from the other side. I've always been told that it's easier to take intelligence analysts with the writing and communication skills and have us learn the technical stuff. Sounds like that may be true after hearing Jon's early struggles. In threat intelligence, and any intel capacity, you have to be able to tell the story and put the dots together. If the data isn't adequately disseminated it's worthless. Great to see him push forward. I'm studying IT certifications after spending time in various intel roles and psy-op. What a journey.

Being fully honest here (read the whole review if you would, please, before you comment-IF you were planning to comment), toward the beginning of this interview, while as a podcast cohost, editor, and producer for a podcast network, I appreciated your interview style.
My initial feeling was sort of…’okay, is this guy just THAT excited about his job, or is he kind of bloviating…?’
Boy was that initial instinct wrong! This person just loves, Loves, LOVES their work, and is SUPER knowledgeable. Wow! I’m so glad I persisted with this interview. It was absolutely brilliant, and so are both of you!! Thank you for this. This is informational gold for anyone interested in infosec. I am most definitely going to buy his book. Again, I say, THANK YOU to both of you!
Also, it’s adorably hilarious and it makes complete sense that he talks to his dog while working. I do the same damn thing! 😂 Our dogs would have some interesting conversations if ever they chanced to meet. Cheers!

This was great David. I’d like to thank you and Jon for sharing your conversation with us and allowing us to take in all the information that was passed here. This was reassuring with some of how my own thought process works and some of how it doesn’t work but it should. Overall it was highly motivating and although much longer a segment than I would normally sit thru this was very captivating and kept my interest the entire time. I also don’t read books as much as I probably should, but I will be looking into purchasing Jon’s book as I’m sure it contains a wealth of information given Jon’s story and passion for what he does. As inspiring as it was I still find that even the slightest interaction between the individuals that I may see in a video that I think highly of and myself is what puts things over the top for me. Just seeing a response gives me that human boost that could never be done in an AI environment and tells me that the author has a much larger commitment to their fanbase for one which in turn allows me to easier digest future content, but also tells me they have probably a much larger workload then one might imagine which is why I’ll again express my gratitude and say Thank You for sharing this great content along with your wisdom and experience, and for the time you’ve invested in what you do and bringing that to us as an audience. I don’t care for cable tv much and it hasn’t been in my home for years but I find it essential to watch and learn from people such as yourself on the youtube platform. Although unaccredited, my list of youtube degrees in various fields is endless! Take care guys!

Great interview as always. On the subject of being motivated, I had a similar experience recently that reminded me of another interview I watched a few years ago. I hit a roadblock (one of many still to come, I feel, in this area). In years gone by, I would have subsequently lost interest and moved onto something else. However, this time around, hitting that roadblock only served to make me more determined to figure out the problem and overcome it. It brought to mind an interview with an ex-SAS guy who said that during part of his training in Wales, he was trying to move up this steep hill, all the while getting blasted by strong, relentless gusts of wind and soaked with torrential rain, repeatedly knocking him back down, but he powered on and was apparently screaming obscenities, essentially at Nature, that he WAS going to do it, he WAS going to get to the top of the hill, and he ultimately passed Selection and became an Operative.
Thank you David and Jon (as well as all of the other guests you have on) for inspiring us all to move into this area with confidence and helping to unlock and inspire that determination.

When it comes to counterespionage... CIA did tap on Airbus company and thus did a favor on Boeing and gave them an edge for tender on hefty contracts in UAE... Inside trading is a "norm" upon politicians and their satellites in US. Or as they say "It is all business until you get caught, then it is a crime"

Just ordered this book! I'm excited to give it a read, and hope it will help "light a fire" for me. I'm a Cybersecurity Analyst right now, and for the first time in a long time I have no clear path or goals for my career, because I got where I am a lot sooner than I anticipated. Thank you for providing more inspiration!

I like the reinterpretation of "overnight success" from 'unsuccessful one day, successful the next' to instead mean 'put in hard work over many nights'

David could youayve try an interview with 1 or 2 project managers and also maybe describe the job position too and skills needed? I'd really want to know how a PM can help a company and what tools are used to promote goals.
Great thanks for this interview, I really loved his love for what he is doing, especially for the circumstances with a family. I can totally relate as I'm transitioning to it while studying atm my 4th semester.
