Such a comforting thought that all four are still alive in their late 70s and contributing their multi-instrumentalism to the world. thanks for the great review Phil!

I fully agree with you as to the quality of the mastering - 10cc were always a rock band that I liked whenever they released a single back in the 1970's but I never really got fully into their music until this box set came out, which is one of those "priced so it's worth a pop" sets. Having given the first few albums a spin, I'm loving the remastering that really makes the quality of the musicianship stand out.
I was the same with Spooky Tooth until they released their box set a few years ago, and really got into them also. From my perspective, 10cc and Spooky Tooth are "progressive pop" or "art rock" bands that are definitely from the same stable.

Thanks Phil for yet another helpful video ... I was aware of the skipping issue so held off purchase ... so it's good to know that a 2nd pressing is now out ... awesome band ... my 1st ever concert was seeing 10cc on Bloody Tourists' tour at the Capitol in Aberdeen (btw you meant Dreadlock Holidy when you mentioned Good Morning Judge) .... the first two albums were on Joathan King's label hence the omission from the earlier box set you showed ... The other box set (Tenology) was a substantial career spanning review but (I think) not all album tracks were included ... the band were peerless in the studio and majestic live with, as you stated, Feel the Benefit being an epic centrepiece ... the band were also so clever lyrically ... super smart - and often very funny (Life is a Minestrone, Second Sitting for the Last Supper, Wall Street Shuffle - all brilliant) ... Graham Gouldman has continually toured a version of 10cc (currently in UK this month - return to USA after 30 years next year) with Rick Fenn and Stuart Burgess who have been with the band for c 45 years or thereby ... they are still a "must see" gig (awesome) ... the recent 2022 Live 2CD set is great ... as are the live sets recorded in 1990's ... I also have a few others recorded live and legitimately released thereafter ... definitely a top tier band for me (with Wishbone Ash, Steely Dan, Sad Cafe, BJH) ... wonderful ... thanks again for video CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland ...p.s. re Live and Let Live - I made my own "rocking" extract from the set which just needs to be played LOUD !!

Phil - you're killing my bank accout lol! I can't help but think a band like Jellyfish years later may have been hugely influenced by 10cc. This is another band I missed other than what I heard on the radio. "I'm Not in Love" brings me right back to laying on the beach as a teenager. A huge AM radio hit back in the day. Listening to some of the tracks you highlighted in this video this morning, I am struck by how creative this band was and just how much I adore 70's rock. I am a big Zappa fan, and although not as inctricate, 10cc's fearless approach to songwriting (not taking themselves too seriously while at the same time playing very complicated music that somehow remains melodic) reminds me a bit of that. I just ordered the boxset. $78 US with free shipping here in the US. A bargain!

Nice review Phil! Very topical for me because I have been listening to the albums from the mid to late 70`s very recently and literally today a copy of `Bloody Tourists` on vinyl arrived and I played it earlier this evening. Great band. Several great singles but for me `I`m Mandy Fly Me` was the bands finest and I`d certainly place it in the top 20 best singles of the 1970`s.

South African keyboard player Duncan Mackay joined the band in 1978 and was part of the successful Bloody Tourists lineup. Apart from 10cc, he played a huge part in Kate Bush's career, as well as Cockney Rebel ( Steve Harley passed away today on news ), Coloseum II, Alan Parsons, and Camel. He has lived in Cape town for the last 20 years, and still records his own compositions, and upcoming artists in his own state-of the-art studio.

Yet another "must have", which your review helped nudge me towards. Not a hard sell though as 10cc were a truly innovative, clever and fun band to enjoy. Great songwriting capacity, fantastic hooks and excellent production values. Did "loose" them after Bloody Tourists (which I really liked) but will now enjoy a bit of catch-up.Thanks for enthusiastic review. On a sadder note, just heard that Steve Harley has died. RIP Steve.

So funny how things are sometimes. Only last week I completed my 10cc vinyl collection, all of them vintage. I even found the UK records compilation in a Danish boy scout thrift store for a 1 £! I decided last year I was going to add to the old vinyls from my childhood and my CDs after I bought all the Godley and Creme albums on vintage vinyl in 2023. Even picked up a cassette on Friday in a Oslo store. They were pretty big in Scandinavia and several of my records are actually Norwegian pressings. The only one I don’t have is the «fake» last 10cc album, Mirror Mirros from 1995 not included in the very tempting box you showed.
Quite a few americans reacted to my videos where I show 10cc, many of them, even my age, could NOT remember them and came back saying «why weren’t they HUGE in the US?»
Thanks for sharing this with us 😊 Cheers from Morten in Oslo 🇳🇴

I ordered my copy and am eagerly anticipating its arrival. My only complaint (even before owning it) is the exclusion of "Mirror Mirror". I loved that album and, since it's officially named as a '10cc' album, it should have been included.

Before I actually listened to them, I assumed 10cc were some soft rock band (not that they did not have some "soft" tracks). I thank my one friend for recommending I explore their discography. You described them perfectly as "prog pop." Extremely creative arrangements, lots of studio wizardry, and lyrics that were often quite biting and cynical-right up my alley! Sheet Music is probably their best. They really opened Deceptive Bends brilliantly with Good Morning, Judge. Stewart and Gouldman demonstrated immediately that they would not be "5cc"!

My main issue with box sets like these is the abscence of the art work and credits printed on the inner sleeves of the original albums. The booklet can have some of that art work and the original credits but rarely - or never more likely - all of it. In the case with the Stevie Nicks box set - as you pointed out, Phil - the credits are impossible to read without a looking glass. I prefer individual reissues but of course those ones can be hits and misses when it comes to the sound quality and the art work/credits as well. Though I am a long time 10cc fan I'm a bit hesitant about this box set. I guess the improved (?) sound quality would be the main reason to purchase a copy. For me anyway.

10 out of ten didn’t make any impression on me when it came out and I lost interest in the band back then. But I came back to this album in recent years and I now think this is easily their best album after the first five albums. Three new tracks was recorded for the american version of the album that I didn’t have on my version of the vinyl album back then and they are really good. So this album has really grown on me and I appreciate it very much. I was also disappointed with Bloody Tourist at the time. I had very high expectations when it came out and it didn’t live up to it. Today, I find it also to be a good album but not great. Somehow, I totally missed the next album when it came out, I’ve only listened to it in recent years and I think this album was their downfall, it didn’t live up to their standard, a rather uneven album. Same for the two last albums. I don’t count the album Mirror mirror as a real 10cc album and I understand why it was not included in the box. It’s certainly is not a good album. I find only one good track on that album and it’s the very fine song Ready to go home. But this is actually not 10cc, it’s Wax, the duo with Graham and Andrew Gold. A track the duo recorded and it finally had it’s place on this album. It’s only this track that can motivate anyone to buy this album.
I went to see 10cc last year and it was a very good concert. Besides Graham, Rick Fenn and Paul Burgess is still in the band, they all where a part of the band in the late seventies, so I think this makes it more than just a tribute band.

I love 10cc but they became much less interesting to me after the departure of Godley & Creme, and pretty much gave up on them after hearing the Look Hear? album. Favorites are the trio of Sheet Music, The Original Soundtrack (my 1st 10cc album) and How Dare You. Really liked the Consequences album that Godley & Creme released after their departure from the band, its just too bad that the album led to the breakup of the band. I can only imagine what the four of them could have come up with if they would have stayed together. Wouldn't mind if they released the Some Of The Bits We Missed as a stand alone cd. I have all of their cds through Deceptive Bends. (The Hotlegs album would have made a nice addition to the set)

Thanks for this video, Phil. I'm not too familiar with Demon. So, I was hesitant to get this. In the middle of your video, I added this to my Amazon shopping cart. I agree that 10cc are Prog Pop. So are Supertramp. Btw, do the cds have any writing? I didn't see any recording or playing credits in the booklet. I recently watched the Hipgnosis documentary on Netflix. I wish that the American cover for Look Here was used. To me, that's more interesting. I just love cd box sets. Update: just purchased this box set from Amazon. Thanks again, Phil

I should imagine there are quite a number of people who have always enjoyed 10cc without actually owning any albums, so I could imagine this selling well - as opposed to bands like Genesis, Yes or Floyd, where anyone who enjoys them probably already owns the majority of their albums.

I was planning to buy this box set, but I read elsewhere that many people received at least one faulty cd in their box set (disc 14 - track 5?). And there's no japanese shm or blu spec alternative... Getting tired of politics of western major labels. They don't care about the quality of cd's and want us to purchase vinyl (at premium price with no quality control either) or obsolete cassettes. My Kinks and Bobbie Gentry box sets had also some heavily scuffed cd's, never received my replacement copy of their so called replacement program.

    • @NowSpinningMagazine
      @NowSpinningMagazine  8 месяцев назад +5

The review is for the 2nd pressing which has sorted out the faulty CD. Demon Records have been excellent in sorting out the faulty CD for those who had the issue with the first set. Phil

"Consequences" ought to get the lavish CD treatment, although G&C were never as good on their own. I don't have a turntable anymore so a CD set would be nice.
I bought the "Consequences" triple album not long after release for just TEN PENCE as apparently WH Smith hadn't had any interest in it. Unfortunately, as a sale item, it has a large chunk of the box corner sawn off.
