It's frustrating to constantly see a UBI mis-characterized as something that would replace work. The key word is "Basic", it isn't intended to completely replace work or the market economy but instead allow people to survive, most people will still have an incentive to work but more importantly people would have the freedom to do the jobs they wanted to do perhaps volunteer, get further education or innovate in other ways without worrying about being able to buy food.

Work is little more than glorified involuntary games - there's nothing wrong bout replacing it completely with ubi.

Main problem with a UBI is cost. How exactly will you raise the money needed to just give everyone enough money to live off of. Also, giving money to people who don't really need it hardly seems productive. Both problems can be solved by using another form of basic income called a Negative Income Tax. Creates better work incentives too.

@@theminuteman6211 if your work could be performed more effectively and efficiently without your participation - what's the point of fooling yourself? No self value could nor should ever be derived from that. Otherwise - do whatever fulfills your requirements for being valuable.

@@alexanderserdyukov1891 Well, there are a couple of ways to look at it. Firstly, the types of jobs that AI can replace are divided on the lines of routine and non-routine (as opposed high and low skill as people assume). AI will not be able to replace non-routine jobs for the forseeable future. Then, there's the question of what work is: is it employment for money or is it the activities than you undertake during employment for money? There are fulfilling activities that cannot really be pursued in a recreational sense and there is fulfillment in earning money from the activities you do.

Confident in any research or other form of advancement by the industry. Now that Britain is no longer a European country the notion of Royal Society does not apply. Perhaps coining a commonwealth slogan for a new British identity would be a sound idea to carry on great work.

I had a friend I tried to explain the driverless trucks are coming. We have" the perfect storm coming". In observation with our current situation we have a segment of society that refuses to embrace change. We are still talking about racial politics from the early 1960's. Also still debating 1865 politics. Those willing to embrace change will make it!

      5th law ??
Or do refer to THIRD law of thermodynamics ?
If so, it describes CLOSED systems. The planet Earth ISN'T a closed system (as a human body isn't)
It rather receives huge amount of energy from WITHOUT by the sun - constantly during now about 5 billion years and will do it for another 5 billion years.
So, the call is for a "device" which can "tap" the sheer inexhaustible energy resources of the sun.

With entirely no fossil fuels, grow forests to burn wood and forge an axe. Wait for more trees to grow and cut them to create a Waterwheel with the axe. The Waterwheel will wear and tear and disintegrate at work well before it produces sum useful energy that matches all the solar the trees cut were exposed to, including the solar captured to produce foods and sustain humans in the process. This is regardless of the Sun still shines and rivers are still flowing.
Solar, Wind, Nuclear, Fusion and all others are no different - they are fossil fuels sub-products.
Humans can not manufacture Energy. Energy always and only flows from the past into the future (The Fifth Law).

I also know how to make R&D into actual real-time solutions that already benefit the world, regardless of politics, race, creed and brainpower. Unfortunately, Stieglitz for all his many qualities still represents an era that has long disappeared, which is apparently where you belong.
