Yale’s Addiction Medicine Fellowship offers unique training opportunities for physicians who are passionate about providing specialized care for patients with substance use disorder. “We have a huge breadth of experiences from the hospital setting, to the community setting, to street medicine,” says Melissa Weimer, DO, Associate Director of the Yale Addiction Medicine Fellowship. Fellows train at a variety of clinical sites including a low-barrier methadone clinic at the APT Foundation, the Central Medical Unit, the Addiction Recovery Clinic, the consult service at Yale New Haven Hospital, and the Veterans’ Affairs hospital. The program also offers strong mentorship and opportunities to get involved with research. “I came to Yale thinking I was going to do my residency and leave in a couple years, and I’ve been here for over 20,” says Jeanette Tetrault, MD, Director of the Yale Addiction Medicine Fellowship. “It’s because of the people that are here and the mentorship that I have received.” Fellows meet regularly with mentors and advisors to talk about career goals and research interests. “We work with them to think about what’s the best fit,” says Dr. Weimer. “By the time I left the program, I really felt like I had a solid understanding of how to take care of these patients in all these different sites,” says Kenneth Morford, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and a graduate of the fellowship.
