  • Traditional business applications and platforms are too complicated and expensive. They need a data center, a complex software stack and a team of experts to run them.
This short video explains what Cloud Computing is and why it's faster, lower cost and doesn't eat up your valuable IT resources.

I used this video for a seminar in my college back in 2009/10. At that time, it was a topic of great interest and very little info was available. Everyone was blown away but the power of cloud-computing and here I am, running a small/miniscule startup in cloud-computing space. Kudos to the team who could explain the concept in precise and intuitive manner with a lot of wit.

This is a good summary and it gives you a good idea of Cloud Computing, Thank you. Perhaps the concept of Security should be known more, because when we think of Internet, there are still things to be improved.

Cloud is basically outsourcing computing resources to outside companies. It's like renting an apartment instead of buying one. It's faster and easier when you're young, but once you can afford an investment for an apartment, it's actually cheaper to buy instead of renting one. Cloud computing can help you start a business, but once your company grows it's better to create your own datacenter.

Cloud computing may be private, public which is the one this video talked about, and hybrid. so your company can choose which cloud server to use. Hybrid is a combination of private and public server.

I'm not quite convinced on cloud computing being more secure. The fact that data is hosted on someone else's infrastructure means it is only as secure as that someone else makes it, and I'm guessing there's a reason why google and microsoft are very careful about what they claim responsability for in terms of security.

I was skeptical at first, but to be honest this was a great rundown of what cloud computing actually is (an app on a server that you host, that you specialize in, that can be run and maintained centrally) versus the hype BS about floating around somewhere magically in lalaland.
This gave an excellent run-down of the business value too.

@dyutiman81 This company is SaaS, they provide software to their clients. However, rather than keep all of the data and information in hardware and disks that are inconveniently located in a clients business that they must maintain, it is all done from different locations, and other subscribers can put data and information in the cloud as well, while it will be accessible only by them. So Salesforce uses cloud computing to reduce the costs of SaaS

Gmail slices the head off of HTML emails, making it impossible to use the most current HTML email techniques.

For small businesses and start ups this saves a lot of headaches. Monthly fees vs upfront costs makes sense. It may make me less money but I look for long term partnerships with my customers and look for the solution they need (not what I need).for larger organisations the thinking has to be different compared to smaller ones so the requirements are different too.

Simply put, you only need an internet browser to access a cloud-based app; you log-in remotely and the cloud company does all the rest. If you don't follow a cloud model, you would need your own data center, servers, storage and a technical team to manage all of this. Aside from costs, it also takes a long time to build out this infrastructure yourself, whereas the cloud computing infrastructure could be ready to go tomorrow.

@LasagnaIsGood : It has many advantages over traditional client/server/internally hosted solutions. For example the security is better (symantec use Salesforce), more reliable (trust.force.com show all server performance), multi-tennant architecture means every client receives the benefits of an improved service (for example real-time messaging, mobile applications, intuative and powerful reporting etc. etc. etc.) and you get a lot a flexibility in configuation and size.

@nicegoodspeed1: In our experience it means IT professionals get distilled and redistributed. In a company IT dept. you are overhead. That is ultimately doomed anyway. At a data center/cloud hosting provider you are revenue generating. The other opportunity is to migrate your skills toward the n number and open-ended litany of apps vendors who can offer functions and services to businesses as cloud apps. Develop and/or support them. You can support any apps you like, independently if you want.

Your three local drives may not fail at the same time, but they will all burn/melt/water damaged if you had a fire. Or disappear if you are robbed. My new shop backs up nightly to AmazonS3 and archives to Glacier. Much safer than my old shop's LTO tapes.
