A very high quality and comprehensive production. These carriages are pretty old hence the lack of “modern amenities” but they are still the most comfortable in service in both Economy and First Class.
Our trains are really pathetic. You only have to go to Japan, China, Singapore, Korea or the UK to see how bad our system is. But it could be worse, it could be as bad as the US.
Also, come to South Australia (where I live), where there are no regional trains. V/Line is excellent by any comparison to us. 😜 Australia also lacks the population density of Europe and much of Asia so that partly explains some of the differences. 🤔
@@FromtheWindowSeat Population density has no bearing on what first class should be when an economy class carriage in Japan, for example, has power for a laptop, USB charging and free WiFi. And I am not talking about a shinkansen which is another world away, just a normal country train.

As much as I laud V/Line for its modern and high frequency services compared to other states, I think that coach loco sets are terrible in comparison and PT should start increasing the fleet of long distance VLOs other than unit 93/94. Or maybe they can order other rolling stock like DMU Amtrak Acela units or Spirit of Queensland trains albeit being quite the investment.

Nice… 17:15 | Economy does have legroom as long you’re not sitting in front of anyone. 17:50 | not really 160 km/hs as pretty much you’d be slow on turns and some others. Also, I’m gonna tell ya, probably most are not going to like the new VLocities on long distance. Because they’ve got no first class, no reclinable seats instead more uncomfortable probably, no leg presses, only two toilets per set, reduced capacity compared to 4 and 5 car N sets. So that’s why locomotives and loco-hauled carriages are better in my opinion.
Hi Nick. Yes, true re legroom - but wouldn't be great on a full service where you have to face others. Re speeds, yeah - I get that, but I think the 20 minute saving takes that into account. The time saving appeared in a number of media reports so I'm presuming the State Government provided the figure at some point (though I couldn't find it any of the more recent Warrnambool line upgrade information). Re the new VLocities - yeah, I've heard about some of those issues. That said, I caught a VLocity to Ararat and back in a day and found it fine. But it wasn't too busy, so that probably helped (had the row to myself).
Great video. Interesting scenery. Sorry, the First Class carriage looked clean but very plain and outdated. Economy Class, old or new, both seem unappealing.
Thank you! Yes, the carriages date from 1981, although they were refurbished 10 years or so ago, and this shows. The VLocity trains are much more modern although interestingly, a lot of people prefers these older trains for comfort (legroom, seat padding etc).
Thanks for the video. Looks like a pleasant trip but hardly worthy of 2022. Very slow for such a short distance. High-speed trains should be much quicker than driving but this isn't. Seats haven't changed since the 1980's. No WiFi or power to seats etc. Governments of all persuasions have let Australian rail become very run down. From personal experience our Australian trains need to up to the standard of say, London to Brussels, or Helsinki to St Petersburg, or Beijing to Harbin, or Copenhagen to Stockholm.
Yes, it would be great to see more investment in railways across Australia. To their credit, the Victorian Government is doing this and these trains will be replaced with modern VLocity DMUs in the not too distant future. I expect they’ll have USB charging like the standard gauge VLocities but that’s not been confirmed. 🤔
Same in NSW, but I think their XPTs are being replaced in the next year or two, which is also well overdue. Doubt that the new trains are going to be real, grown up trains with tables for people to work or play games etc. on. Would also be nice if they had full power outlets for laptops, etc. but again, I doubt that will be the case.
@@IndigoIndustrial The patronage will be there if a high speed service is availabe. Europe is already moving away from short haul flights and providing trains faster than fossil fuel road usage.

If you intend on touring Warrnambool, beginning from Melbourne on public transport, “Pack heaps of valium” you’ll need it. Take a houseboat the ocean views are far more beautiful
just wondering why the surfaces of body panels of the old v line trains are uneven. Is it due to poor crafting when the trains were built? or is it the result of metal aging?
Hi Steven. I'm not sure to be honest ... although some of the carriages are more than 40 years old now. You can read more about their construction here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VicRail_N_type_carriage#Construction
You were just lucky to make it to Warrnambool in one go and not have to get on a bus like happens all the time because the tracks are not well-maintained due to state government not spending enough money in the regional areas
Hi! I'm planning to go to Australia this year. Is there any weight limitation or maximum size dimension for checked luggage at the VLine from Melbourne - Warrnambool? I'm a bit worried if large size travel luggage (about 30inch) is not allowed.
Hi. There are limits … From December 1 2021 the total luggage limit for all V/Line services is 32 kilograms. Customers can carry two items of luggage, with no one item weighing more than 16 kilograms, as well as one piece of hand luggage. You can read more here: www.vline.com.au/Fares-general-info/Bikes-Luggage-Animals
N Sets are more confortable than the early velocity series, N set locos are named after towns on the routes they serve and have name plates with this on them, i do like the speed and quiet carrages on velocity but
Good points. 👍 The loco hauling this train was named The City of Swan Hill. I like quiet carriages in theory but the problem I’ve found is they’re not policed by staff so it’s luck as to whether people follow the rules.
I guess it comes down to how different countries classify first class rail travel. For most services in Australia you simply get more space and sometimes seat features. 🤔
One thing this video did exhibit was the decline of this line over the years along with much of the infrastructure over Victoria and indeed the rest of Australia. Evident with evidence of sights of lots of abandoned infrastructure. Only back in the 70’s the towns along the way were thriving hubs of transport, eg, Geelong, Colac, Camperdown and Terang. Warrnambool beyond the main station on a remanent of the abandoned Port Fairy line being the only place where any significant freight activity is taking place. With through links to Timboon, Mortlake and Port Fairey closed. And soon the loss of one of the few remaining loco hauled services for so called more acceptable Velocity services. RIP Victorian Railway’s, your best days are behind you.🇦🇺
It's sad that the railways were allowed to decline (similar to the tramways in many major cities) but some states (in particular Victoria) are investing a lot of money in urban and regional railways, so I think that's positive. Of course, more could always be done - but I'm glad to see more recognition for the role that rail can play.
They should upgrade Portland port and rail links as it has a deep water harbour. A proper railway along the coast could piggy back on those freight train tracks.
Thank you! There’s actually five different tracks, all from the RUclips Audio Library. If you look at the description of my video and scroll down, RUclips should show you the five songs, which you can click on to hear.

Re the new VLocities - yeah, I've heard about some of those issues. That said, I caught a VLocity to Ararat and back in a day and found it fine. But it wasn't too busy, so that probably helped (had the row to myself).

Tanty Melbourne 🇦🇺😍
😄
Please tell me track renovation in Warrnambool line.
Yes, they’re working on it now I think.
BEAUTIFUL SCENERY! Warnambool is lovely!!!
It is. Thank you!
The train is empty of passengers
The empty economy cars were on Saturday and near the end of the line, so I’m guessing it’s normally busier at other times and closer to Melbourne.
The patronage does not justify it at the moment.
@@IndigoIndustrial The patronage will be there if a high speed service is availabe. Europe is already moving away from short haul flights and providing trains faster than fossil fuel road usage.
Swan Hill service is loco hauled too if u wanted to look at that
Thanks Roger. Maybe one day. 😃
My earliest childhood memories from around when I was 3 were of Geelong station and that tunnel. I thought those N class trains, which were orange then, ran on Weet-bix and poo.
🤣🤣🤣 💩
JUST READ OTHER COMMETS AND I SEE THAT SOME ONE ELSE ALSO WATCHES RORY NOT SURE IF YOU NOW WHAT MAESAI MEANS BUT I AM A 83 YEAR OLD AUSSIE LIVING IN A CITY IN THAILAND CALLED MAESAI SO THE ODDS OF ME EVER GETTING TO SEE THE PLACES YOU SHOW ARE NOT GOOD SO I LOVE TO WATCH PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOW ME THINGS I WILL NEVER SEE MY SELF THANK YOU THANK YOU GRAHAM
Thanks so much Graham.
I live in Geelong and apart from knowing every spot you have shown from Melb to Geelong, (work all around the west of Melb) I have a small amount of info you may be unaware of. In the opening stills of your North Geelong train station you can see the old signalers box, that has been demolished over this past week!
Oh right … I had assumed (wrongly) that might have been heritage listed. I tried to find information about it online but couldn’t. Thanks for letting me know.
@@FromtheWindowSeat Ill have to take a photo next time I go through there, but a theory may be with the upgrading of stations around high capacity stations, it may have been demolished to make way for a new station design similar to Waurn Ponds
@@matthewsage6412 Sounds like a reasonable theory. 😉
Some people may not know this but there used to be Tea Rooms at Colac Station. The Warnambool to Melb train would stop at Colac and you could get a cuppa and a sanga, before continuing on to Melb...
That sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing. 😀
HI ADAM JUST FOUND YOUR CHANNEL AND I HAVE ENJOYED IT SO HAVE ADDED IT TO MY WATCH LIST ONLY YOU AND A VLOGER CALLED RORY SHOW WHAT THE SCIENEY OUT SIDE IS SO I WIIL NOT WATCH THE OTHERS UNTILL THEY LEARN WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO SEE LOOK FORWARD TO FINDING OTHER VLOGS OF YOURS
Thank you. Yes, Rory Ding makes similar videos.
As a new subscriber I want to congratulate you on you videosI come from a long line of railway people( including 10+ years in the railways myself), You bring a lot of nostalgic memories to me.Thankyou.
Hi Leon. Thank you so much - I’m really pleased to hear that.
great video. n sets are also used on the early up and late down service on the bairnsdale (or gippsland) line
Thank you! Good to know. Keen to visit Bairnsdale one day.
Could you please travel to Seymour next
Maybe. 🤔
The diesel locomotive services in regional Victoria are no faster a steam train! It takes literally hours to get from Melbourne to Warrnambool. To any tourists from Japan! If you intend on touring Warrnambool, beginning from Melbourne on public transport, “Pack heaps of valium” you’ll need it. Take a houseboat the ocean views are far more beautiful
Ha!
PUBLIC OWNED!!!!
Do the Vlocity's have a First Class and a Cafe?
No, they don’t have either. The new standard gauge VLocitys, which will run to Albury, are meant to have a cafe but it hasn’t been fitted yet.
I enjoyed this video. I have used the Warrnambool service and look forward to the Velocity reducing travel times
Thank you John!
just wondering why the surfaces of body panels of the old v line trains are uneven. Is it due to poor crafting when the trains were built? or is it the result of metal aging?
Hi Steven. I'm not sure to be honest ... although some of the carriages are more than 40 years old now. You can read more about their construction here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VicRail_N_type_carriage#Construction
@@FromtheWindowSeat thank you for providing the information of construction. Good on you mate😃😃
@@stevenchu3878 Not a problem. Was interesting to read more about them. 😉
You were just lucky to make it to Warrnambool in one go and not have to get on a bus like happens all the time because the tracks are not well-maintained due to state government not spending enough money in the regional areas
Yes, I’ve gotten that impression from some of the comments. Thanks for watching!
You can read more here:
www.vline.com.au/Fares-general-info/Bikes-Luggage-Animals
N Sets are more confortable than the early velocity series, N set locos are named after towns on the routes they serve and have name plates with this on them, i do like the speed and quiet carrages on velocity but
Good points. 👍 The loco hauling this train was named The City of Swan Hill.
I like quiet carriages in theory but the problem I’ve found is they’re not policed by staff so it’s luck as to whether people follow the rules.
Love this video
It is good in Warrnambool
Thank you! 😊
Train to Apollo Bay
Unfortunately there's only a bus from Geelong to Apollo Bay.
I'm from warrnambool
Nice!
Great video as usual and very well detailed.
Thanks Adam
Thanks Jay - glad you enjoyed it!

I always do as your videos are full of details and you know what you are doing
I worked out you were in acn51
Good sleuthing. How did you work that out? 🤔
Bn4 and brn49 are in set 18 and acn 51 is the only first class car in set 18 (there’s a set configuration in Wikipedia you can see)
.
🤓
The onboard staff member is NOT a guard, he/she is the conductor ! Its the conductors compartment
.
Ah yes, I realised my error later.
3:57 best loco in the fleet!!!
Oh right - why is that?
First class?? what a joke - no food drink entertainment - welcome to boring Australia
I guess it comes down to how different countries classify first class rail travel. For most services in Australia you simply get more space and sometimes seat features. 🤔
There are no "Guards" on VLINE trains - they are "Conductors", who are predominantly Customer Service and Passenger Safety focused.
Ah, apologies about that.
@@FromtheWindowSeat no probbies mate - just wanted to point it out. There have not been any guards on Victorian Railways for quite some time 🙂
Fantastic video as per usual! Look forward to see where you travel next.
Thanks so much Chris. :)
Super video, nice train ride! Thumbs Up & Subscribe
Thank you! :)
It costs 88 dollars return for a horrendously slow train and a high level of discomfort
Yes, it’s outdated but i still enjoyed it.
@@FromtheWindowSeat fair enough I'm just a disgruntled local
@@sammyjinga Understandable. I’m just a visitor from South Australia (where we have no regional trains … so very jealous!).
@@FromtheWindowSeat glad you had fun mate :) continue doing what you love
@@sammyjinga cheers!
The train DOES stop at Colac, surely??
Absolutely - I was just on the wrong side at the time to capture the station. 😉
At the 7.37 mark just to correct U their not rail cars there called comeg which started back in 1981or Metro as we know it now
Ah cool. Thanks. Yes, we have similar sets in Adelaide except they’re diesel powered (the 3000 class).
@@FromtheWindowSeat yes I've heard of them have ya got any red hens left?
I don't mind the vlocity but I'm going to miss vline n classes & so on

@@FromtheWindowSeat oh good i'm glad to hear that is still running i would love to go & ride on them one day i thought the steamranger had close down
The place names are hilarious!
Most of them are derived from Aboriginal words.

Shame the locomotives are being phased out
Definitely. 😔
