I live in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area and the cross border ties between the two counties have always been real strong here. They used to play here a lot, I think I saw them live six times and they were always great. I think one of the best things about them was that they were VERY Canadian, but I think that was also one of the reason they never really crossed over big in the States. Anyway they are greatly missed. Salute to our friends to the North.

When singer-writer of The Hip, Gord Downie, learned he had a terminal brain cancer tumour, he wanted to go on one last tour of Canada with his beloved friends in the band. They announced his condition and the tour. A couple of years ago, RUclips was full of people reacting to the video of The Hip playing the final song of their final tour ever, in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. It was so emotional that a lot of reactors were crying, even though they had never before heard of the Tragically Hip.
That last song was called "Ahead By a Century", in which Gord hopes that a hundred years hence, we (Canadians) would be better people, in a better country.
Do yourselves a favour, if you have not already, and watch and react to "Ahead By a Century" live in Kingston. Beware that there is one video that mostly shows the faces of Canadians in different cities, watching the concert live or on TV (half the country watched the live broadcast). Be careful to watch the video with the actual concert footage, instead.

I will always remember the Hip's last concert on 20 August 2016 from Kingston, Ontario (band's hometown). The concert was televised live (and free) across Canada. When they got to the part in "Grace Too" where Gord goes into that primal scream section, shouting "No" over and over, I felt his frustration and helplessness as he faced terminal brain cancer. I can only imagine what he was experiencing. But, true to this song's lyrics, he faced this heartbreaking fate "armed with will and determination and grace, too".

The Hip sang it as their 2nd encore, during their last show. When Gord sang the closing lyrics "Him, Here, Now, Huhh", I heard it as a primal scream coming from him, a scream at this twist of fate that shortened his life... I might be wrong, but to this day I hear that way. RIP Gord.

In 1981, there was a 'knock at the door' Police in British Colombia wanted to question Clifford Olsen because Kim Werbecky told police she had been brutally raped and assaulted after getting in a car with a man who promised her work washing windows in Whistler. She was considered an unreliable witness because of her lifestyle and history and the serial killer was eventually released. When it comes to The Tragically Hip, it’s really better to think of them as a folk/folk rock band in a lot of ways. Every song tells a story. A truly Canadian story. When Gord announced his condition, a nation mourned. Then we got to celebrate his life and their accomplishments when they went on a nation wide tour. My wife and I were extremely fortunate enough to catch both of the last shows in Edmonton. The feeling in the building was amazing. All the love pouring out. We watched the final show too. Cheered out loud when Gord dropped the “F” bomb seven times on the CBC and they let it fly. The vast majority of their music is excellent. But a couple of my favorites are Gift Shop and Poets. And look into some of the stories behind the songs. 50 Mission Cap and Wheat Kings

The Hip, Canadians' pride and joy! You are missing out if you don't take the time to research the lyrics a little, because Gord Downie is a suburb poet-philospoher-songwriter! Other suggestions: 'Locked in the Trunk of a Car', 'Nautical Disaster', 'Blow at High Dough', 'Poets', 'Bobcaygeon', 'Courage', 'Ahead by a Century', '700 Foot Ceiling', 'So Hard Done By'... these would be a good start 😉😁There's a great short documentary about the The Hip and their last bittersweet, blockbuster tour (after Gord was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer) on CBC: Now there's a new full-length feature documentary about The Hip overseen by Gord's brother titled "No Dress Rehearsal", which was just released and previewed at TIFF (the Toronto International Film Festival) to rave reviews. RIP Gord 💙

Amber hits the nail on the head in describing this as atmospheric. And so, when the album came out, I didn't get into it as I had with the earlier ones. In fact, I didn't buy a copy until at least a decade later. It's only after having them open the only concert of theirs I attended with this song, that somehow I finally got into it. Now, it's one of my top five tunes of theirs. And I definitely suggest seeing them perform it live: particularly the last time in Kingston. (That whole concert is available online and I'm sure you would be moved by it like much of Canada and Hip fans around the world were when we watched it live knowing Gord's condition).
