What size should you cut your Boxed Corners when sewing bags?

- Today we're making the same bag three times. Each bag is made with four 10" x 8" rectangles of fabric, with fusible fleece ironed to the outer two rectangles.
The bags have either a 1", 2" or 3" boxed corner, so we can really see the difference it makes to change up the size of the boxed corners.

As a visual learner, this video was extremely helpful. To see the differences side by side explains so much ! Thank you!
Yep, heard it through out.
I've never seen a tutorial with the boxed corners sewn in that order ... I love the visual on the different sizes!
You're not the first to say that. I just filmed a video showing every combination I know of for doing Boxed corners... I'll have it edited and up in the next few weeks. ❤️
Same here 👍
A very clear and useful tutorial! Thank you for assuming we don't need to see EVERY step in excruciating detail as so many others do. Excellent.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. ❤️
I saw this video on youtube and was amazed at how you assembled your bags. I have never seen construction of a zippered pouch done this way. It isn't the way I learned but I am definitely going to try it. It looks so fun. Thank You for another option. I also bought your amazing template tool. 🤩🤣😂
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for easy, clear, concise instructions.
So glad it was helpful! ❤️
Love learning new approaches. Every bag I’ve ever made, sewed the zipper first, but the the sides, then the boxed corners last, then turn the bag. I’ll try this way next time. And I use clips not pins, can sometimes be much easier ( for me. At least 😊) But fabulous tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you so much for showing all 3 sizes! Its a really great visualization!
Thank you. It made a lot of sense. It just depends on your need. You are a good teacher.
Thanks! I think it helps to really *see* what the difference does. 🥰
Great video. I've never seen the boxed bottom sewn that way before. Learn something new every day! Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. ❤️
Thank you for this great tutorial! I appreciate watching different techniques that encourage me to try and see what feels right (and have the patience for😊), with pouch and bag sewing, especially the ones with a zipper. I usually favor 1-1/2" to 2" boxed corners for my simple grocery totes and now see what a difference a 3" corner makes! I like your (longer) zipper first, then sewing boxed corners next, technique.
I want to make a video where I box rhe corners at a different point in the process with each, so we can visualize that difference. 🥰
Such a practical tutorial! So helpful to see the differences in size during cutting, sewing, and the final appearance from different angles. Thank you❣️ Don’t forget to close your lining seams 😂.
Thanks!
And I pulled out one of these bags today.. the hole is still in the lining. 🤣
Thank you. This was a very helpful tutorial. I’ve been making a lot of zipper pouches after overcoming my fear of zippers.
So glad you overcame your fear! Zippers are awesome! ❤️
Came across this video by accident ( have now subscribed). I’ve never seen boxed corners done in this way before. I’m going to have to have a go. Interesting video. Thank you ☺️
Welcome! Glad you're here! ❤️
Your video with the different sizes boxed corners was very helpful. Thanks a bunch!
Excellent demonstration! Thank you! I too am a visual learner and this makes perfect sense to me! You did a fabulous job! Now don’t forget….sew those linings 🤣🪡🧵😂
I’ve always wondered about how to decide what size to cut the box for the corners. Thanks for this information. I appreciate your time and tutorials.
Happy to help! This was so fun for me, too!
Great video. Goes to show, there are so many different ways to achieve the same thing. Steps may be different, but the end result is the same. I do the sides before I box the corners. I enjoyed seeing this method. Thank you.
This was a brilliant visualisation! It was fantastic to see how adding 1 inch to the boxed corners could make such a difference to the same bag. TY! I made sure to subscribe.
Love it! I'm making lunch bags for Christmas
Thank you for doing this. I really appreciated seeing the side-by-side comparison of the different options. Subscribing now!
Thank you, thank you! I’ve often wanted to see what differences there would be in changing the dimensions in my box corners to some of my bags. Your video was exactly what I’ve been wanting to see. Well done. Also, your template is on my list of things to add to my cutting table !
Strangely I had just asked this question on a different site. Great information, thank you.
Was your phone spying on you and sent you to me? If so... can we even be mad? 😆😆😆
Glad you're here! ❤️
Very helpful! I just got your boxed bag dies and had the same question. Thank you 😊
Yay! And yes, this all would be the same if cut with the Boxdd Bag Die. ❤️
Great video. I have not made bags before and you really enlightened me about size.
I'm so glad it was helpful! I think the visual really makes the differences evident. ❤️
You make it look so easy!😊
Because it is! (And yes, I've had a lot of practice... but little pouches are easy... you can do it!)
i have never seen the corners sewn before sides, very interesting.there is more than one way to do something :)
I did a whole video on different ways and orders to sew these together! But... whatever gets you a finished bag in the end. ❤️
Thanks for the great video! So helpful to see size difference.
Your welcome! I think so many of us are visual creators. 🥰
Very useful video, thank you. The new way of boxing corners was very interesting
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
What a brilliant template you designed! I just ordered one❤
If I have a pouch or tote in mind, I figure out how wide, and how big I want the sides to be. I add in the seam allowances and make my cuts. So for a 10 inch wide by 12 inch high bag with a 2 inch gusset (side) I add half the gusset to each side, 12 inches wide plus seam allowance. Cut the height the same way, whatever the finished height plus half the gusset added to the bottom only. So that would be 13 inches. Add your desired seam allowance for the bottom and the top where your zipper will go. Any pattern can be adjusted in this way. Happy sewing!
Great tutorial. Very helpful. ❤
Sewing the boxed corners was different than the way I do it. Neat.
So many different ways to do the same thing. ❤️
Excellent video! Thank you for the comparisons 🧡
Glad it was helpful! ❤️
Thanks, Carolina! That was fantastic! I always wondered.
This was a very helpful tutorial! I had wondered about this ! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful. ❤️
This is a very, very handy template😊
Thanks! I'm glad you like it!
I need to really try my hand at boxed bags.
Yes! You'll love it!!
FYI, there was a weird sound issue in this video. I could hear you fine with your microphone, but I heard a weird sound in and out, most noticable wherever you stop and start talking, kindof like static or a fuzzy old tv. I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but it was a little distracting for me. Thought you'd want to look into it so it doesn't affect future videos.
Hmmmm... I didn't notice when I was doing the edits. I didn't love the audio on past videos. I was using the in-camera mic, and the camera was adding a whirring. This is the first video with a new mic. I know I need to make some positioning tweaks. Hopefully that will help.
Yes. I heard that too. I kept adjusting my volume, thinking it was my device. Even told the dog to move, thinking he had something to do with it. 🤣
I had the same issue. Without any dogs. 😂
I hear it too
Sound issue was worse when you moved further away from the sewing machine if that helps you determine where to reposition the microphone to. If you can't reposition, try turning the gain up on the microphone slightly if you have that facility in your recording software 🙂
Love the comparisons. Thank you!
I'm so glad it was helpful! ❤️
Thank you so much! This visual was very helpful!
when sewing the interiors together, I like to sew the seam just a hair deeper, like at 1/8 more. I think it fits inside the exterior much better-not baggy
Love that tip! 🥰
What a great tutorial!! This video made me a subscriber.
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing. ❤️
This was a terrific video! Very helpful, thanks!
Thanks! I'm so glad it was helpful! ❤️
My favourite size for a pouch or a messenger bag is 1 inch, for a shoulder bag I use 1.5”
I love this video. I am looking for a detailed video of the bag. Is there one?
Hi! This is the first of your videos I’ve seen, but will be checking out what else you have. And I already plan to subscribe as soon as I’m done with this comment! You are a great teacher. I’m looking forward to what else I can learn from you. Thank you! 😊
What a lovely comment!! Welcome, I'm so glad you're here.. I hope you enjoy my videos. ❤️
Wow , very clever ,will try for sure , big thankyou Australia
Very helpful tutorial. Thanks
Very helpful video! Thanks😊
Yay! I'm glad it was helpful! ❤️
Great video where we visuel can see the difference ❤ one thing I was surprised over was you said that the zipper teeth should go against the outer and not lining? Is that correct understood??
I have learned it opposite
I like how you do a corner at a time, rather than closing a full corner at a time. Interesting
This is super informative!
Thanks! I think it helps to really *see* it (and when someone else does it and speeds up the tedious parts). ❤️
For the height measurements does cutting a 1" corner reduce height by 2", 2" reduce by 4", 3" reduce by 6"? And ate these the same for the bottom width? This is something that never seems to be explained in detail
Thanks so much, very helpful!!!
000great template just ordered. nice work and idea
I do like your video. I am trying to see about making them .are there zipper you can not sew over
Yes. Zippers with metal teeth. These are less common nowadays, but if you use vintage notions, you may come across them.
I love that bedazzled machine! Did you bedazzle your other machine? Do you notice if the diamonds fall off with the vibration of the machine?
They do not. They're glued on very securely. I take her on trips with me, so a few fall off with the wear-and-tear of getting packed and unpacked for travel. But it isn't many.
Awesome video!
Love this! Thank you!
Very informative.
Thanks! ❤️
Great video. Thank you😊
Great vid 💜
Thanks for sharing this great tutorial it was very helpful and informative. Am I understanding this correctly that the 1 inch cut becomes a 2 inch boxed bottom when completed and the 2 inch cut = 4 inch bottom, etc?
Yes, cutting 1" from each side becomes 2" when put together. ❤️
thank you!
the bag with the 3" corners would be great for Wonder Clips
Oh! It would be! 🥰
Thank you! Really enjoyed this tutorial and the next one on boxed corner bags where you show 5 different methods. Very inspiring to me to get busy making gifts for my friends. I'm sorry if I missed it, but what fusible fleece to you use? I heard you say it's heavyweight, but not the specific one you were using. Pellon 973f?
I don't usually call out a specific brand of product... I don't remember if this was Pellon or Thermoweb brand. I have used both.
@@CarolinaMoore Thank you!
How can you make a bag with the boxed corners but the sides are straight up and down rather than angeling out? What measurements would you use?
You'd have to start with a trapezoid shape that has the top angling in... but then when you open the bag, you have a smaller opening at the top (like a vase - small opening at the top, wider bottom). It could be really cute... but I'd want to make sure I still kept the top open wide enough for it to still be functional.
Really helpful thank you
Do you have patterns or “how to” for making a purse with pockets and straps?
Super helpful
I generally sew my sides before boxing my corners.
I have plans to do another video on different orders that you can see your Boxed corners in... there are lots of options! ❤️
Cutting them first and then sewing doesnt give a true 1”, 2” or 3” box corner, you will loose some inches with the seam. you need to mark the 1,2,3” from the sewn seam to get a true size.
@applelover53 it depends on how you measure your Boxed Corner. If you measure the depth of the entire bag when the bag is sewn together, or if you measure the cut that you make. For me, I measure the latter, not the former.
Remember that we're not beholden to measurements. Measurements are a tool we use to gain consistently. With this method, I can consistently know what size I'm getting, even if my measurements aren't achieved the same way yours are.
If you have a method that works for you, great! But that doesn't negate any other method, just like my method doesn't invalidate yours. ❤️
Can you use the template to trace the size box and then use scissors instead of the rotary cutter?
You totally could. But the rotary cutter takes it from 2 steps down to 1. And I like shortcuts. ❤️
I never have seen a video with the corners boxed first instead of doing the side seams first. How does this change the pouch ?
It doesn't make a difference... in this video I make the pouch 5 different ways, and you can see they turn out the same... ruclips.net/video/PKb2hJYM30U/видео.htmlsi=6heLD2B7BwOIdDZ9
I've made all types of bags for many years and I never cut the corners out first. I just make a triangle with whatever measurement I want the corner to be and stitch it. I always felt that if for whatever reason a stitch breaks, there's not a hole in the bag. When the corners are cut if a stitch breaks, you have an actual hole.
If there is a lining two seams would have to break in order to end up with a hole. Highly unlikely. The triangle method leaves a lot of bulk in the bag/pouch/purse. It just doesn't look crisp and clean. Try using a heavy duty thread so it won't break. Fiercekittenz has a youtube video about thread and what can go thru a domestic machine. I have purchaed heavy duty thread and am very happy.
@@kaybrown4758 I'm really happy with the triangle method and it's worked for me many years. I haven't noticed that the bulk on the underside of a bag is problematic.
I first learned using the triangle method, so I'm very familiar. ❤️
It is still sewn closed, so threads could still break somehow. Although I've made lots of bags, and as long as I lock my stitches at the folds, it has never been a problem (regardless of the method).
I prefer boxing my corners this way, but if another way works for you, do it!! There are lots of great techniques - I say you should do the one that gets *you* the best results, and that *you* enjoy most. ❤️
I have on my "to film" list a video on the different ways to box corners. I (clearly) have a favorite, but I think it is helpful to know the other options. ❤️
Brilliant! I’ve boxed a lot of corners using the triangle method, and I haven’t loved that process. By the time I reach that point, I just want the bag to be done. Can’t wait to try your method, where the boxing is done early on and in such a logical way.
Love that template… is it available in the Uk, please?
Check with your local stockist! If they don't have it and can't order it in, you can order from me... but the shipping does get wild...
Cool! Thanks!
would you say that the final result would double? like cut 1 inch then the final result would be 2?
If you're cutting a 1" corner, then yes, the depth would be very close to 2", since you're sewing two together.
It isn't *exact* because it hits a little bigger when you sew it, because of the 1/4" seam allowance, and then gets smaller again when you sew them together - but one of those seam alloeances is at a 45 degree angle, so they don't exactly cancel one another out... but very close.
Curious why some bag makes say cut the corner after side is sewn. Measure out from seam line not the edge of the fabric why is that? Does it really matter?
I've been getting lots of questions similar to this, so I have a video going up Thursday night (just finished editing) showing five ways to make your bags - different order of sewing, different ways to cut the corners... really, most of it comes down to preference. Some designers prefer a different way. This is my preferred way. None of them are wrong. Find your preferred way and do that. ❤️
Oh my goodness. Has everyone forgotten the Pythagorean theorem? a2 = b2 = c2? Cutting an inch, 2 inch or 3 inch corner will not give you a 1,2, or 3" boxed corner. Easiest way to get a specific dimension, is to open up your fabric, lining up the bottom seam on top of the side seam. Take your ruler (say for a 3" boxed corner), measure a 3 inch hypothenuse, mark, and sew on your mark. Easy. Quick.
This isn't a pythagorean theory equation, because we're not making triangles. We are making squares, and then the corner of a cube.
You cut a 1"square, which is a 1" cut on both the x and y axis. You then sew them together, which brings them in to the third dimension - the z axis. But the cut is still 1". That hasn't changed.
However, when you added the seam allowance, both in sewing this seam and in sewing the seam to put the two halves together, it gets a little more complicated. But they essentially cancel out one another.
Is the square actually an inch or inch plus seam allowance
The square is an inch. Then gets bigger when you sew the seam. And a little smaller when you sew the seam allowances to put the bag together. So, it ends up at a fraction over the initial cut size.
Hello, are the ones sold on Amazon authentic please?
I don't sell on Amazon, so I have no way of verifying. I've seen listings on Amazon where they blur out my logo, which makes me question the authenticity.
You have to remember that the larger you cut your corners the shorter the bag becomes….
I generally cut 1.5 inches and bags look nice.
Yup! Big depth will make for smaller width. 🥰
Very dramatic sizing!
Right? Makes such a difference! 🥰
Way too many ads for a 20 minute video.
Unfortunately, RUclips controls the ads on the video. 🤷♀️
The sound quality of this video is insuffe
rable
There is always the option not to watch it, I guess? 🤷♀️
Bad sound
I forgive you! 🥰
What is that annoying techno buzz when you speak?
I'm trying out a new mic, and need to adjust the placement. ❤️
Very helpful thank you
