  • Downwind SUP Foiling mania is sweeping the world...this exciting discipline has captured the imagination of many including our co-founder, Will. In part 7, Will sits down with Reuben to discuss the last 5 months of progression where he's managed to squeeze in a few good downwinders and is starting to see some good progression. We discuss how will has been focusing on other disciplines of foiling to build on skills to support his downwind foiling.
A lot of you have said theres very little real world information about how to get into downwind foiling , so we decided to capture our our journey and share it with you. Will progressing through his downwind foiling journey, identifying how he can progress and sharing the insight with you all. Make sure you catch up with parts 1 to 6 if you haven't already.
Some parts of this series require a SUPboarder PRO subscription - subscriptions support the magazine to make quality content that supports your journey through the SUP disciplines we cover.

Great chat- really enjoyed it. Can 100% relate to Will's journey so far. I'm at a similar stage- maybe a couple of sessions behind. Based further east along the channel coast- Eastbourne-Worthing area. We don't have any true estuary or bay run locations nearby, so it's mainly be open sea, but having said that we don't get much groundswell, so it's often fairly bay run like. Don't yet have a solid crew to do car drops, so it's been short runs up to 1-4km and walking back along coast. I came from winging, so no paddling background. I find that I'm much better on a small foil and small board, downwinding after dropping the wing with a sea anchor than I am with the large foil and large board, even on the same day with the same conditions. I guess it's what you're used to. But I think I'd struggle to paddle up on the smaller foil. Anyway, feel like I'm getting there after the last couple of sessions and totally hooked. Keep the videos coming. Cheers, Ferg.

Hey Ferg, Thanks for your comment. Great to hear you are getting into it on that coast, I would certainly keep shouting out on some Facebook DW groups and see if there is any other riders near you , getting in thee communities is so helpful I have found. Do you think you find that smaller combo better as your pumping and riding style is used to that kit. I have found it harder to ride smaller foils surfing since getting so used to the large pump foil. Each foil seems to need its own style! So glad you are making progress, its certainly addictive when you get those break throughs! Cheers, Will - SUPboarder

Great video Will and Reuben - when you are reviewing the new KT boards, would you spend some time discussing how/where you located the mast?

We were putting the APF1675 just forward of the middle of the box. This seemed to work well. Will - SUPboarder

Great video guys, I've been loving this series. I apologize if it was mentioned and I missed it, but how much does Will weigh? I have the same kit exactly and it's super inspiring to see him succeeding with it. I'm new to SUP and just standing on that dragonfly and paddling is a significant challenge, let alone getting on foil.
It's also great to see his preference for protected waters. My location has about 4 miles of fetch and I have been discouraged thinking that wasn't adequate, but it seems Will likes runs with similar fetch. Do you think one can learn DW skills in locations with limited fetch, aside from flat water paddle ups? How short is too short, or how tiny can the bumps be to be a useful feature?
Lastly, as Will goes down to a smaller foil I'd be really interested to see a comparison of the APF 1350 and the HA 1180. I am wondering how much the difficulty changes from series to series.
    Thanks for the great vids!

Thanks for the comment - great to hear you are following along. I'm 68-70 kg. We have some videos on paddling smaller surf sups in our channel and on SUPboarder PRO, even though its based on Surf sups the techniques will still apply to these :) Cheers. Will - SUPboarder

Been loving this series. Well I finally did it. Got my self an amazing deal on a kt 8’2 and uni Foil hyper2 170 with 83cm mast. I can’t flat water start yet :( … wondering if shimming the tail is the way to go or if that will Just create more drag on an already fast foil 1097 cm2. 8:1 ratio . Any advice? I find myself to be a strong paddler and enjoy sup surf. I thought my child hood skateboard Ollie would have me winning. Waiting to get a progression 230 later this summer but am so motivated to try to get up on the hyper2 170.

Thanks for the comment :) Great that you are getting into it. We talk about Shimming tails with Ross in an earlier part of this series.... its worth a try! It will be hard to flat water paddle up the 170, the 210 is much more possible. The 170 will be great in some soft surf though and I think much easier to get up with that small, controlled bump! Let us know how you get on! Cheers, Will

thoughts on the 1350 APF? vs 1180?

Hey Eric, my take on it having chatted to lots of people on it including Aidan at Armstrong is that the 1350 is going to have a bit more top end speed than the 1675, but still not going to be the foil that you can really get the 'dynamic performance' from like the HA v2's will allow - I think it sits nicely in between them and for lighter riders could be a nice starting point. Certainly a space for it in the Armstrong foil line up, but for me I think I want to go with a HA to try and break into a more dynamic bump riding style :) Regards, Will - SUPboarder
