  • Someone asked if I had ever tried the Vortex on my Akorn kamado. I hadn't! So, I ordered a few different sizes and started testing.

That's a great idea for the third level. You can fit a ton of food on that grill with three levels👍😊 Cheers🍻

G'day Rob, that's a stroke of Genius. Well done and I like it that you think outside the Square (or Circular Kamado)

Rob, I’ve had my Akron for a few years now, and have been wondering how to use a vortex with it. I’m going to grab the mini, I think I have a random 17 inch grate from an old charcoal grill. Thanks for figuring it out

Great idea! I may have misunderstood but did you say that if you were to use just one vortex you would use the mini? Thanks for the ideas and video.

yep, if just using one, i'd go with the mini vortex with the 17" grate to hold it. The top of it is just under 6" so it's perfect for the stock Akorn grate. Thanks for watching!

@@RobsBackyardBBQjust to clarify are you saying you would recommend trying the mini for fuel on the 17” grate in the middle and food surrounding it and above it on the standard grate? So fuel on the bottom as is usual and the 17” grate and fuel on the middle grate with the mini and then more food on the top.

@@RobsBackyardBBQ Sorry, I think I’m confused, too. Should I be ordering the Vortex Mini or Small (or both)? FYI, I just got and seasoned my Akorn Auto-Kamado and haven’t even had my first cook on it yet (but I will be this week!).

Hey there - Right, but no coals under the 17" grate and probably only food on the regular 20" akorn grate. It may get hot enough on the 17"

@srauly totally up to you. The small vortex fits at the very bottom and the mini is a good fit on a 17" grate that you can purchase. If you're just getting one, maybe start with the 'small' vortex for the very bottom and put food on the original/stock akorn 20" grate (with no heat deflector).
