+Lizren Arts they had the same people working on eso, the story writer and someone else big in the company died but they had the same people working on it along with other companies.
+Lizren Arts also the graphics for eso are crazy, but it's an online game so it's loading everything for everyone, skyrim only loads what your character can see so it can add more details on skyrim stuff. but the fact that eso loads everything and still looks that good should amaze you
Riiiight, so not wanting to play a game which is almost 20 years old even though I played every other elder Scrolls title extensively, Plus in arena you couldn't freely explore the whole of tamriel
I wish people would understand the differences between an rpg and an mmo. An mmo will look baren and more open because it is designed to be filled with real life people going about their business. Skyrim, an rpg, is a solo experience and designed to make you FEEL like there are real life people going about their business, and so is more tight and constructed in its design.
To all the people wondering why it looks different, it's because The Elder Scrolls Online takes place 1000 years before Skyrim, and Riften is bigger and more lively in ESO, because Riften was burnt down and rebuilt shortly before the events of Skyrim during the revolution.
I hated Riften in Skyrim and I still think it's by far the worst town, rivaled only by the ever-grey Windhelm, but I love it in ESO. People just really hate change, I guess. It's a bit bigger and more open in ESO.
Skyrim looks like shit, that's why I had to mod the textures and meshes. As well as mod the cities to make them more expansive and filled. Not to mention it's best to put a decent ENB on that bad boi.
RIP In Peace Seamus Skyrim does have some good textures, but yes as soon as you see what the texture mods do, you really do facepalm. Bethesda did a good job with the 3D models of the various enemies, they did an excellent job with the placement of trees, herbs, shrubs, rocks, streams, and mountains, Bethesda was very inspired by Norway's natural geology. Also, I can say Skyrim's five main cities are not very big, but they are all unique and have a great architectural design. The cities fit in the game world very nicely anyways, Skyrim does not need to have sprawling and grand cities.
FusRoDah2 In my opinion it does need to have sprawling cities. Because even though it is a small province it doesn't make logical sense to me that the capital of Skyrim has like 50 total people in it. And that's one of the reasons I use city expansion mods, along with population increasing mods. But to each his own.
It does because skyrim was designed for one player however in mmorpgs everything must be designed so that 50+ players fit in a single space, and thats why riften feels so open on eso
kunven They changed it because its a city and in Skyrim, Riften doesnt really look like a city, like Falkreath or Dawnstar which is small to look like a city not like Markarth or Windhelm
I feel like the areas in ESO are lifeless. Yeah the level design is cool and all but it feels like it's missing it's soul. In Skyrim, NPC's were interacting with each other, but in ESO they are just standing still doing the same animation, it just feels lifeless
In Skyrim I felt like I could talk to anyone and they could talk to me. They had personallities. In cities like Windhelm you saw racism. Murder, and all sorts of problems. It felt so real. It felt like I could change things for the better. In ESO it all feels plastic.
Etrius Dragnox I don't have ESO but by the looks they lack "meat" for lack of better words. Like what you said no personality or anything of a sort and the thing I don't like about MMOs is that you can walk through enemies
Gaco360 Unlike most MMOs, enemies in ESO actually have collision. This wasn't the case in the beta, but people said it made combat feel too 'floaty' so they added it in.
Shields Well it is a MMO and in most MMOs you don't see the NPCs move around much I agree it is indeed lifeless Skyrim sorta is too with it's little to no life travelling the roads and such. But you don't really expect much out of an RPG unless they want to go all out with making tons of NPCs and make it so they walk and such. I really don't mind but sometimes I just want more depth to the world but with this it's an MMO so you can't ask for much out of it.
You people on the comments hating on the re-designs are clueless. They had to make these areas in Skyrim slightly larger in TESO to accommodate more space for online players.
Why is old riften stone and new riften wood. You don't tear down stone to build wood. You don't have stone burn down and be replaced with wood. Like, was there an oblivion gate that destroyed the town? Did the mage college destroy it? Did Sheogorath decide to hurl cheese from on high? In any case, it has definitely seen cheddar days.
IDK how to explain this but... One thing I hate to note about ESO is that the style of the buildings and textures and colors look more... nerdy. It's a weird choice of words but ESO looks more like a first person Runescape or World of Warcraft where as Skyrim looks more medieval.
Gage Eakins Possibly the expanded layout in Riften in Teso is because of the War, they say we develop fastest during wars. Teso's Riften looks quite fortified and well defended, whereas Skyrims was a very simple town. We have to remember lots change in a thousand years.
When I look at the cities and maps in ESO everything looks _weird_. I think it's a combination of the game engine and object layout. The people who did layout in Skyrim did a wonderful job of melding the objects together into a whole (for the most part). ESO looks like people placing objects somewhat arbitrarily. The rooms look too sparse, gaps between stuff is too large or small. I dunno, just looks wrong to me. (I've played both games in high and really low graphics modes so it's not just texture differences)
Riften has been burned down before. That's why I'm ESO it's more wood. The keep was later made of stone incase it happened again. It is still recovering.
+Erikur King A single-player RPG years in the making looks better than an MMO with hundreds of players on each others' screens all the time. Wow, incredible! ...You do realise that an MMO can't possibly have graphics similar to a single-player game? Otherwise everyone would lag out of the game at the best, and the game servers would be constantly down at the worst. They had trouble keeping ESO standing under the weight of countless players on a single server even with these graphics.
This video is supposed to illustrate the difference between Zenimax Online's interpretation of Riften in the Second Era 583 and Bethesda Game Studios interpretation of Riften in the Fourth Era 201 which are nearly one thousand years apart. *This is not a graphical comparison.*
The buildings themselves, graphics aside, are prettier in ESO because they have more design elements to them. However, ESO looks cartoony while Skyrim does not. Everything in ESO looks like it's made of plasticine (2:48 strikes me. Look at the "wood" on the well. It doesn't look like wood. And the base of the pillar, do the large stones around the base look like stone to you?). The lighting in ESO really sucks too. They should have gone with the same style and lighting as Skyrim while keeping the same level of design elements. It would have made wonders for immersion. I didn't feel immersed in ESO at all.
***** Eh, opinions are opinions. Do you know why I like bright colorful graphics? A dark art style is better used in horror games. Call of Duty and Modern Warfare could learn to become more colorful, so it's not as dull. Oh, and, where do you live? I'm Australian, over here the grass is green (mostly), the trees are brown or grey (depending on the type),
But you also have to keep in mind that ESO is set about 1,000 years before Skyrim. People and cities are fluid, ever changing. That's why I like the differences-it adds a bit of realism, you know?
Nicholas Branagan I have recently been made aware of this but there is still one problem. Windhelm and the nordic structures should be almost the same.
llamajoeteam Windhelm was the first city the Nords of Atmora founded when they landed on Skyrim making it the oldest city in all of Skyrim (Built by Nords). The reason Zennimax gave us for its wooden over haul is that in recent years during the Akaviri invasion of Windhelm it was completely sacked and destroyed. Now the only lore breaking part is that the Palace of Kings in third era Skyrim was never destroyed and has been the same since Windhelms founding by Ysgramor. So the city has good reason to be made of wood, the Palace of Kings should still be the same. Now supposedly they are repairing it if you ask the Kings Jarl in ESO Windhelm. That explains why it is behind a locked door and un accessible. If you look over the wall though you won't see the Palace of Kings just because ZOS needed a filler while its not there. So the city is fair to lore with the excuse of the Palace Of Kings.
SeriousDragonify Bethesda didn't make the game. Their Parent company, Zenimax did. No official Elderscrolls team worked on TESO. Not even the composer. This was a completely new game for a company that had never before made an Elderscrolls Game. So of course they were going to make it their way. While trying to closely resemble the world Bethesda made.
William Merzlak Oooooooh now that explain why ZeniMax shitheads give strikes and remove Skyrim musics on RUclips. 2 years back my account was terminated because was so much popular listening Jeremy Soule musics and it was extracted from gamefile. Everybody did complain on them how they suck in life. Corrupted company.
SeriousDragonify You can actually kind of see the mountain, but not as prominently as in Skyrim. Just a different engine rendering distanced terrain differently.
I am a Skyrin Nut, I hope they make another Single player Game with all of Tamriel, I love to explore the map and I hope it is set in the time of the Dwemer so we can see the old Dwemer Ruins in there glory days. but I understand as in reality time changes everything but I hope they keep all of skyrim as it is, just make it younger.. but the same, Winterhold for example it would be way different the whole town would be there before the cube at Septimus Signus's Outpost caused all of the chaos, but the college should be the same, just keep it within reason
@@bigcat8991 Well, I only know a little about New York, so I suspect that before the 17th century, the place now called New York was just forests, swamps, and indigenous tribal villages. sorry if I have a mistake, and sorry for my english
Things have changed so much and I'm not sure if they *should* have changed them that much. Not sure if I like it, but I hope that the game will still be awesome!
Sigfee its because in a single player game everything is loaded respective to what you can see. if you go into a building everything is de loaded except for the building itself. While in a mmo everything must be loaded at all times to avoid discrepancies. That and mmo have way more characters loaded then in single player games. And lets no forget that the game also has to be able to run on older hardware so more people can play the game (mmos cost a lot) so the engine is trimmed down a bit to accommodate reducing visual fidelity.
I might give the game a chance, if its worth paying 15$ a month for it then I will, if I don't feel its worth it then I'll just cancel my subscription.
I think what this video needed was some explanation on why it looks the way it does, like how they do the rewind theatre for game trailers. So these people that are too ignorant can realize why it looks the way it does in comparison and why it makes so much sense.
Skyrim takes the cake hands down. Theres way more personality and diversity in it. ESO looks super bland, lots of buildings look the same, lots and lots of empty space, interesting color choices, confusing layout. it goes on. I don't mean the graphics either just the thing as a whole just looks off.
i agree with you that skyrim is a lot more beautiful but as far as play ability goes i think eso takes the cake. i actually get to play with my friends this time around and make new ones that will encourage me to actually get back on the game after ive finished the main story lines.
ive been in every eso beta test and ive been gaming it up since day one of early access. so if you were referring to me as the one thats not playing it you couldn't be more wrong. i also have more than 1000 hours put into morrowind oblivion and skyrim.
Actually the Mistveil Keep that appears in Skyrim is the buyable house just outside Riften in ESO. It was added to the city in the beggining of the Fourth Era
Yeah, it's not really a fair comparison. TESO is set 1000 years before Skyrim. You try looking at other cities, maybe London 1000 years before and see. Actually thats another thing, how come there has been such little progress in Tamriel over the past 1000 years? should they be driving around in cars and such by now?
Yeah well they have things called Era's. They're basically centuries in Planet Nirn. The place where Tamriel takes place. And it seems like this takes place in the 2nd Era or 3rd. Also. There are machines in Tamriel. Though they aren't ready. You can find the Machines in dungeons in Skyrim. There are Robots and machines used underground. But was never used in Tamriel. Because the Creator of these Machines has been killed and no one else knows how to use it. And the Robots somehow came back to life and started to kill anyone who was trespassing in the dungeons.
I mean, look at the world in 20,000 BC (CE) Until Christ was born which is 20,000 later there wasn’t much progress done either… Renaissance gave us the world we have today. eg. cars, planes etc… Renaissance happened in around 1500-1600 AD.
My fave spot in eso was riften blacksmith. It's the place where every player try to sell their stuff. Was a trader in eso and I made hella money from that place. Right next to the bank too which is very convenient
One thing I really dislike about the mmo.. Look at the people size compare to the building sizes. It's like you're a tiny ant. 1 footstep is the size of half a body, it looks really weird.
Just so you know, I currently own the game, and played many beta's. The lighting in this video is a poor example as to what it looks in the game. The weather changes often, and I believe when this vid was made, its was a darker, gloomy day. I personally find the lighting in ESO to be as good as skyrim's lighting with mods. Watch more videos of ESO and you'll see.
LILpiecesCOMITY I think it looks great Ive played Elder Scrolls since Morrowind. I think ESO looks beautiful especially for being an MMO. I was a bit disappointed when I look at RUclips videos of the game before early release and they looked not up to par if you will. But in person and in front of the screen I was truly impressed and satisfied.
spaceageGecko You realize that Bethesda didn't work on this game? Zenimax Studio's is the developer of ESO, and has nothing to do with the development of Fallout 4. Bethesda has been working on Fallout 4 since before TESV even came out. It will most likely be announced at E3 this June, and released next fall/winter.
To be honest i like the skyrim textures better it just males the game feel a bit scary and creepy like the game kinda is suposed to be. The TES online is just a bit to bright for my preferences.
Ryan Brecht usually they are but they really didnt have to make the game that bright, in the new trailer they released everything whas dark and that is how a TES game is supposed to look.
I think it makes the world seem more fantastical, saying that the shivering isles was may favourite setting in the series to date. Everybody has there own preferences tho :)
Mai'q is an easter egg that makes references to the developing process of Elder Scrols games, such as additions, new features, removed features, canceled projects, etc... He's not part os lore, but I still love him though.
Shelleg3s M'aiq is a family name, passed down from M'aiq to his son, Mai'q. You can prove as much when you find M'aiq's lute in a public dungeon that's inscribed that sentence.
ESO is set 800-1000 years before Skyrim. Do not compare a city mostly made of wooden houses and looking for similar locations please. This comparison is kind of laughable....
Skyrim Riften looks like it had rough, compacted log cabins. ESO Riften looks like something out of Jade Empire. What the hell is up with the Chinese influences?
When I was like level 15 I just had a quick look in the Rift are to see how Riften looked like. :D I was killed very quickly but it was totally worth it. :D
I'm thinking of buying TESO but I have some questions. 1. Should I get the game? 2. How do I get the game? 3. Can you explore all of Tamriel? 4. Can you explore all of Tamriel as any race, or will everyone attack me if I am a Nord visiting Hammerfell? 5. If you can explore all of Tamriel, how do you get to High Rock from Black Marsh in a hurry? 6. Can I explore freely or must I do everything with other people? 7. Do I have to pay a sum every month like in WoW?
You should get the game unless you only played skyrim and no there is No paid subscription you can be any race and vist anywhere when you finish the main questline and people there Won't Attack you,You will run into other players on towns some dungeons but some things are solo, you can get the game at game stop best buy EB game etc
Max Grundström 1. Depends. If you like Elder Scrolls, then no. At least now. If you want MMO, then maybe you could like it. 2. For PC, you can buy in the official site or in the Steam (Steam all the way of course) 3. You can explore at least one region of every province in Tamriel, but not all the continent's territory. For example, in Skyrim, only the eastern areas are avaliable. But they probably will add other regions in the future. 4. You can only explore a region if your alliance controls it. For example, only Altmer, Bosmer and Khajiit can explore Aldmeri Dominion's territory. Also, you can explore all Cyrodiil with any race. After you finish the Main Quest. You have the option to explore other alliances' territories. 5. As I said, you cannot. 6. You can explore freely. Even Cyrodiil. 7. You dont have to pay subscription anymore. Buy it, play it.
Skyrim looks more realistic. I understand that it would kill every computer in the world if you had ESO's graphics the same as skyrims, but at least make look as good as oblivion's!
Skyrim's graphics aren't very demanding. The engine is just poorly optimized. If anything I would say the ESO engine has better lighting effects and shaders. The textures and poly counts are the only thing holding it back.
Think you need to go boot up oblivion then go load up Oblivion then go load ESO. ESO is much, much better looking. But hey time tends to distort perception, I know I've loaded up some old game and have gone "I don't remember this looking so bad" lol
I remember reading a book in Skyrim, can't remember which one, that told the story of how at some point, again can't remember details, the Jarl of Riften went insane or there was a revolt and basically Riften burned down into a shell of it's former self. Maybe that's set between ESO and Skyrim, hence the differences.
they are pretty much totally different cities. Just shows how much zenimax didn't care to actually recreate the elder scrolls faithfully and respectfully.
Riften was attack and burnt down about 600 years later after the time of Elder Scrolls Online. Literally there was nothing left. It was rebuilt later so actually Zenimax is right on track.
Adam Johnson It is their right. Bethesda owns Zenimax Online Studios, and the world of Tamriel belongs to them. They have a full right to change lore just as they want. Because THEY have created it, not you. TES Online is a precious game, and i like old Riften more than the Riften of Skyrim.
ESO got Riften fine, it's true from it probably being burned to nothing that it'd be dramatically different during Skryim. However the other cities, for the most part, were wrong. The Palace of Kings in Windhelm was said the remain unchanged since the 1st Era, and yet it looked very different than Skyrim. I can get the spacing difference to make room for the massive amount of players too, but the lifelessness of the game is inexcusable. They literally could have played Skyrim, or even Oblivion, for reference on how to make citizens in their game; but I'm gonna assume they didn't.
I'm sick and tired complaining about the game based solely on the the fact that it doesn't have as good of graphics as skyrim and it has a subscription. First off It's an mmo of COURSE the graphics are going to be worse! ESPECIALLY WITH the incredibly large scale PvP! And this isn't even the highest setting which is obvious but people are too stupid to realize that Second a subscription is THE best way to do an mmo. You can't one time buy an mmo because You do not have any additional income to maintain server's or produce additional content, and free to play is incredibly risky, plus is immersion breaking, plus leads to a horrible community, PLUS does not generate enough income (look at GW2's endgame). God people are stupid sometimes.
Guild Wars 2 seems to be doing well for themselves. People are upset that you have to first buy the game, then you have to pay a subscription, and then they have a cash shop.
Gage Eakins GW2 has no endgame or any new content because they don't generate enough endgame to add stuff. I keep having to explain this to people, the box price covers all of the development up to launch and the subscription cover's the cost to run servers and to pay employees to make additional content. And there isn't a free to play style cash shop, there is store for player services like name changes and that's it, lot's of mmo's have them. People don't do there research or form their own opinions. They see 10 seconds of game play and here some tidbits of information about the business model and then they feel they have the right to judge the game.
Cherno Alpha This is not true. When Asherons Call 2 was released it had better graphics than any SRPG of its time. When Age of Conan was released it also had better graphics than any SRPG of its time, actually its graphics are as good as TESOs and that game is around 5 years old. Though, I do not hold MMORPGs to graphics.
Richard Depaola jr Well If you look at the sheer scale of the PvP in ESO you'll see as too why the graphics had to be toned down. And on ultra the game actually looks really good, it's just in this video the graphics have been lowered. But people are dumb so they don't see that (and they think this is a graphical comparison) And that may have been the case for these games but can you with how good single player games have gotten graphically do you really expect the same quality? (not implying that you do, just making a general statement)
Massive downgrade. Wow, they want to charge a subscription fee for playing this downgraded crap? I mean that makes about as much sense as paying 500.00 for a console that is overpriced, underpowered, NSA camera enabled, uses last gen DDR3, looks like a 1980's VCR, and renders in 792p with tons of screen tearing. That's just STUPID. The only chance this game had was staying f2p. Huge down grade. I mean it's almost as bad as downgrading from the SUPERIOR PS4 to the pathetic bone.....we not quite that bad, but you get the point.
whaa whaa, they had to downgrade for an MMO, its looks great in its own way. PS you could be right about the consoles and I'm pretty sure its actually the Illuminati who is funding the NSA's good work, let me just my tin-foil hat
I keep trying to take your argument seriously but then you go and compare The PS4 to the Xbox One in the most immature/fanboy way possible. So yeah, you can have my dislike for that.
Its a dam MMORPG game, they have to downgrade the game. If they came out with high tech graphics for ESO hardly anyone would be able to play the game. and honest, ESO has the best graphics to Date for an MMO
I think it's kinda weird that Riften in ESO (during second era) are somehow look more modern and grander compare to Skyrim which take place in fourth age. Make me think if there are certain event that make the town go downhill. Despite less building and larger market place, the architectural style are very different it's look like Nordic mix with Chinese influnce, the layout are larger while many parts including town's base are made of stone. However every architecture look three time bigger make the characters look like a size of ant it's quite unrealistic. While in Skyrim the town is smaller, have more building and less empty space, the architectural style are different it's look like old and crumbeling medieval canal town, but the atmosphere is amazing. I think it's beautiful in its own way while hid many dark corners waiting for players to explore. I still like Skyrim's Riften more because it's feel more realistic, and has much more personality, the charm that MMO games are lacking, for example every npcs has dynamic routine they will go to work, eat, and sleep or doing something else while in MMO games they just standing there all day or doing the same thing over and over again, unless quest script or phasing system change them so it's look very robotic and immension breaking. ESO sacrifice so much of elements other Elder Scrolls games has, in my opinion it's look like another MMO take place in Elder Scrolls universe but lacks of its heart.
THe Reason why eso graphics sucks its because its multiplayer with hundreds of players playing in a server it cant handle to make it hd because it has to animate so mutch.
Nicfire10 actually guild wars 2 looks better and its older so thats not why they did it its more cause of low end pcs could play it to so they earn more money and selling more copys of the game mmorpg is pretty much a money flow for the game company that creates a mmo ofcourse a mmo cant look as good as a single player game cause of many players and animation but thats not what they did with teso
Riften in TES Skyrim was the best city, mysterious and very living at the same time, with a very cool autumnal atmosphere. The Online game made Riften loose its charm, it looks too different, too big (the houses are too far away from each other) and not as mysterious as it was. I know that the TESO events happened many years before skyrim and of course it's not supposed to be the same city but i'm disappointed as i felt in love with this city in Skyrim.
This was CLEARLY played on the lowest settings in ESO...because I play it maxed out and it looks nothing like that...you can tell because there's nothing that gives off a reflection like it does with ESO maxed out.
Definitely not the lowest setting. I tried that out. You probably can't even comprehend how bad it looks on minimum. I didn't think it was possible to strip away so many graphical elements.
Have you ever seen a massive online game have better graphics than a recently released single player game? They could have given graphics like Skyrim or better, but you would be lagging more than actually playing the game
Shelleg3s The guy has a point. The graphics used in this must be a engine used by other developers because it shares a huge resemblance with Planetside 2 the creatures and npcs look "glossy" and the textures do this weird fading thing and it looks awful. Not all mmos have that and those ones look better.
Dicksmack jones They wanted the game to be playable for a wide range of people. If the game had better graphics than Skyrim, I couldn't go above 15fps. I mean I'm currently saving for a better PC, but from a business standpoint it makes sense.
Ignoring practical layout stuff for different sort of games (MMO/not MMO) and so, I'd say the biggest difference of the cities, including Windhelm, is the scale. A city changes a lot during a 1000 years, of course, so it's not strange the buildings aren't the same. But at some points I think the layout is a litle too different.. Because even if houses and architecture changes, the overall layout of a city normally doesn't change very much. Streets continue to be where streets always been. The same with squares. But it's kind of the same, so it's not what really makes me frown. But what I'm having a problem with is the size of the cities. They are so much bigger in TES-O than in Skyrim. That doesn't really make a lot of sense, does it? Cities usually grows bigger during the ages. The population increases... People move there from the outside... So the cities grow with it's population! These cities, to the contrary, seem to have the exact amount of people dying as being born and surviving. All the time. During a thousand years. I almost even wonder if the population haven't decreased? Whichever option you choose, it doesn't really make any sense. Or maybe, we can just forget everything I just said and presume the people of the second era loved the style and layout of open spaces a lot more. It's easier that way.
Did people honestly expect TES5 graphics on ESO? I mean, come on, be realistic, we've only come so far in technology. Personally, I think it looks great, and much better than what I was expecting, especially taking it to account the amount of players in can house in one go :)
The cities in ESO actually feel like cities lol, unlike in skyrim where they are like 12 people who live in Whiterun
Agreed, I don't like the 4 lane highway approach to paths, but I do prefer the lively village atmosphere too.
I like that Riften is bigger in ESO. One thing I hated about Skyrim was how small the cities were.
And the fact that there were more bandits out there that people on a city
yeah but the city in skyrim isnt really a city, its a village. thats how small it is.
@@Forbidden_Chocolate true
In Skyrim it was mentioned that Riften burned down once. It could explain the differences.
Thank Talos ( of course he's fake ) that someone commented. Seems like no-one's read the lore books.
Jaelon Griffin Talos fake?TALOS....FAKE??!!!

Of course he's fake. I never got his blessing. Not even on a human character.
freakyDJ Also the difference of multiple centuries between the two games could explain the difference
So riften burned down so they decided to make it a city in the water made completely of wood?
I honestly like Skyrim Riften a lot better.
me too
I just like how it's a lot bigger. I always felt like I knew every crevice of Riften in Skyrim
More of a real look to it right?
My opinion I never played online but I like them both. Two different design team getting to try there style.
+Lizren Arts they had the same people working on eso, the story writer and someone else big in the company died but they had the same people working on it along with other companies.
+Lizren Arts also the graphics for eso are crazy, but it's an online game so it's loading everything for everyone, skyrim only loads what your character can see so it can add more details on skyrim stuff. but the fact that eso loads everything and still looks that good should amaze you
Remember: ESO takes place in the 2nd Era and skyrim is in the 4th era, so there is bound to be differences. Just like old to new cities in real life.
Yeah, in fact with long the gap it's weird that these cities in TES still are even there
That, and IIRC, Riften was burned down and rebuilt from the ground up once or twice in the lore.
So what places wouldnt've changed in that time, though? Crypts? Dragon stones?
Riften was destroyed and builded up again a few time in between the games, so I find the differences really lore friendly :D
That's comparing 1010 to 2010. HUGE difference in technological advancements and etc.
All I want is a regular rpg where I can freely explore the whole of tamriel
TES: Arena, if that's what you want to do
One that ain't two pixels
Adebayo Akinfenwa No respect for the franchise. NO way you're a fan.
Riiiight, so not wanting to play a game which is almost 20 years old even though I played every other elder Scrolls title extensively, Plus in arena you couldn't freely explore the whole of tamriel
Adebayo Akinfenwa Honestly, it will be quite some time before there is a single player RPG that encompasses all of Tamriel.
MtMarshi The problem here is that there are no real life people playing ESO
@@easy306 Idk what the game was like 2 years ago but I just got back into the game after not playing since 2014 and it is still lively and full
? ESO is just like a mainline ES game and follows all the lore very accurately. Riften burned down before 4E and had to be rebuilt.
ESO's Riften feels larger, like an actual city. But, I like Skyrim's aesthetic more.
TBH ESO still looks like the nicest MMO about, people dont understand that a mmo engine is more demanding then a singleplayer one.
Seems that the living conditions of people in Skyrim at fourth era have decreased…
LI Censi yes because of the oblivion chrises and because of the thiefs guild
vegeta xx I doubt the Thieve's Guild is one of the main reasons why Riften is poor

+THErealUNDEAD1 hehe, i get it!
+THErealUNDEAD1 hate when that happens
true lol. I have a female character because usually their are boy characters in games so I decided to change up a bit.
To all the people wondering why it looks different, it's because The Elder Scrolls Online takes place 1000 years before Skyrim, and Riften is bigger and more lively in ESO, because Riften was burnt down and rebuilt shortly before the events of Skyrim during the revolution.
Skyrim has so much more personality and atmosphere.
ESO looks just like every other MMO imo.
Funny as I thought the town looks a lot more creative in TESO.
I hated Riften in Skyrim and I still think it's by far the worst town, rivaled only by the ever-grey Windhelm, but I love it in ESO. People just really hate change, I guess. It's a bit bigger and more open in ESO.
You wouldnt say that if you owned it.
it looks like every other MMO because it is a MMO. Its designed to have other players in it
Yep I think that sums up ESO pretty well. Bigger world but completely soulless.
+Joe L. well said
+Snoken Skog When you guys mention a game's soul what aspect are you refering to?
+Snoken Skog Oh you're a Skyrim hater.
Joe L. Welcome to MMOs
The Elder Scrolls Online has a sloppy feel to it but Skyrim looks like a beautiful masterpiece.
Skyrim looks like shit, that's why I had to mod the textures and meshes. As well as mod the cities to make them more expansive and filled. Not to mention it's best to put a decent ENB on that bad boi.
Yeah. Skyrim looks like crap until you mod it to hell. They couldn't even bother to fix the 1.9 Lip Sync bug.
Wes Miller Thats because zenimax didn't let Bethesda do their thing
Skyrim looks.. better..
***** Elder Scrolls Online is The Elder Scrolls 6 in the series, it's (TES:VII Online)
Hansnicolaim
ESO is not the Elder Scrolls VII
It does because skyrim was designed for one player however in mmorpgs everything must be designed so that 50+ players fit in a single space, and thats why riften feels so open on eso
kunven They changed it because its a city and in Skyrim, Riften doesnt really look like a city, like Falkreath or Dawnstar which is small to look like a city not like Markarth or Windhelm
Whiterun Guard ™ ESO is not Tes VII, its like falout new vegas, its not falout, but its still the same franchise thing
Shields Also for more explanation here is a link to a video in which explains it ruclips.net/video/TYoLh0ajX9U/видео.html
I can't wait till the next real Elder Scrolls game.

You people on the comments hating on the re-designs are clueless. They had to make these areas in Skyrim slightly larger in TESO to accommodate more space for online players.
Ikr!!! They just can't get how awesome ESO is!!!
فيصل المحيميد Heh heh you make me laugh, ESO and awesome should not be in the same sentence my friend.
Mark Juliano yea i think you're right
awesome is not enough to explain how AMAZING eso is:)
فيصل المحيميد Oh boy, I don't know about that one.... you know they are getting rid of the subscription in hopes more people will buy it.
Mark Juliano nope.
they're just giving people who don't have credit cards a chance to play:/
Why is old riften stone and new riften wood. You don't tear down stone to build wood. You don't have stone burn down and be replaced with wood. Like, was there an oblivion gate that destroyed the town? Did the mage college destroy it? Did Sheogorath decide to hurl cheese from on high?
In any case, it has definitely seen cheddar days.
+Cam Miles
You, sir.
You.
***** You think the was bad? My Stilton puns stink.
+Cam Miles Because ESO is set in the second era and Skyrim in the fourth era
Raileanu Solomon yeah. Eso has stone riften and skyrim has wood riften.
+Cam Miles isnt riften on stands or pillars in skyrim
IDK how to explain this but... One thing I hate to note about ESO is that the style of the buildings and textures and colors look more... nerdy. It's a weird choice of words but ESO looks more like a first person Runescape or World of Warcraft where as Skyrim looks more medieval.
They were trying to make it look way to stylized. Also Riften is way too big here. I thought the point of Riften was to be a small canal town.
IMO Elder Scrolls games should look more colourful, I didn't like the art style of Skyrim
Skyrim was made in the time of the dark old gen filter, same as gta iv or killzone, fallout 3 too, they looked depriment sad and brutal
OMG its almost the same! The only difference is ESO Riften has been rendered on a PS2
Il Valentino I wish there was a meme to put to these comments, they're f****** hilarious

so true!
Haha so true
Hahahaha. Damn.
I wasn't expecting ESO to look *amazing* being that it's an MMO. But christ, what a downgrade.
Riften has been burned down before. That's why I'm ESO it's more wood. The keep was later made of stone incase it happened again. It is still recovering.
+Taco Smith 1000 years, still recovering, damn nords!
+Uri Lim Coetzee It never said anything about riften got burnt down 1000 years ago, it could be around 30 years before skyrim
+PrimalForlorn during the great war Riften was burned down and taken over by the thalmar

Am I the only one who thinks skyrim vanilla graphics look much better than TESO?
noppe, i think also that skyrim looks much better :p Thats why i perfer playing skyrim ^^
+TheColinLp you play for graphics?
+Erikur King A single-player RPG years in the making looks better than an MMO with hundreds of players on each others' screens all the time. Wow, incredible!
...You do realise that an MMO can't possibly have graphics similar to a single-player game? Otherwise everyone would lag out of the game at the best, and the game servers would be constantly down at the worst. They had trouble keeping ESO standing under the weight of countless players on a single server even with these graphics.
+Mr. mistery true. Because the frames can't keep up with every single player. on eso one thousand of players can be on one map.
nope
Elder scrolls online looks like the Elder Scrolls that came in between Oblivion and Skyrim
This video is supposed to illustrate the difference between Zenimax Online's interpretation of Riften in the Second Era 583 and Bethesda Game Studios interpretation of Riften in the Fourth Era 201 which are nearly one thousand years apart. *This is not a graphical comparison.*
*****
I fail to see your point. I don't see the word "graphic" anywhere in the title, video description, or the video itself.
ESO overly exaggerates the Nord Architecture. Skyrim manages to encompass the architecture while showing realism.
maaz322 well it is 2000 years in the past too
well riften did burn down once
For an MMO, ESO looks incredible. Also love how it has a kindve cartoony look in it. Reminds me of Oblivion.
***** Both look amazing.
Skyrim looks and feels better then ESO
than*
Skyrim is far more detailed and better in lighting than ESO...
The ESO version looks a lot nicer
The Elder Scrolls Online actually takes place 1000 years before Skyrim, so it's reasonable that the cities aren't identical
sadlyfe
I kinda like it. Bright and colorful, most games should be, not dull and bland.
So you like cartoonish graphics and all games should be that way? eww
***** No, I meant, something along the lines of Oblivion's art style.
EpicU
Not everyone likes that style. I think oblivion and WoW look ugly.
***** Eh, opinions are opinions.
Do you know why I like bright colorful graphics? A dark art style is better used in horror games. Call of Duty and Modern Warfare could learn to become more colorful, so it's not as dull.
Oh, and, where do you live? I'm Australian, over here the grass is green (mostly), the trees are brown or grey (depending on the type),
EpicU
I don't agree with the dark art style being only for horror games. but can't please everyone.
Im kinda pissed that they changed skyrim so much. They should have just kept the old map with a bit of a graphical update and thats it.
***** if they were the same building then.... yes
llamajoeteam Windhelm was the first city the Nords of Atmora founded when they landed on Skyrim making it the oldest city in all of Skyrim (Built by Nords).
Crumorn Taleteller but they said in skyrim the buildings are the same
Graphics comparison? Skyrim wins.. awkward..
Expected since ESO is an mmo
dumbass... comparing MMO to a singleplayer game with no multiplayer.
0:30 There is no mountain in background.
That might be because it didnt render that far.
samturrett They could, but they didn't want to render. Lazy Bethesda.
At least there's no aggressive Thieves Guild recruiter, so that's an improvement.
Why is it I seem to prefer the atmosphere and style in ESO more ?
lol, now lets compare New York City today with New York a 1000 years ago
OMG ITS DIFFERENT! ( who would have guessed time does not stand still? )
New York today and New York in Assassins Creed 3, it's different
New York didn't exist a thousand years ago.
@@bigcat8991 forest, bayou, and Iriquois
@@ra_alf9467 New York was founded in the 17th century,so therefore that land wasn't technically New York until later on.Find a new analogy.
Well there is a thousand years of difference between the two, it makes sense that alot would be changed.
b0sanac A thousand years and a revolution. The old Riften was burnt to the ground.
b0sanac The cities of Riften and Windhelm were destroyed between eso and tes v, so they will be different, Winterhold will be larger too.
Really would love to play this game since I love Skyrim but I don't feel like paying 15$ dollars a month for it. Why didn't they just made TES 6?
I noticed that in a lot of MMOs. I always wondered why that was. Maybe so more people could fit in one building at a time?
why didnt they just made fallout 4? ... but i would love an TES 6 that uses the whole tamriel
***** That makes sense. Thank you.
You need a lot more upvotes. This is exactly the point. Sadly, you have to bash it to get any notice instead of pointing out facts. :/
Skyrim takes the cake hands down. Theres way more personality and diversity in it.
ESO looks super bland, lots of buildings look the same, lots and lots of empty space, interesting color choices, confusing layout. it goes on. I don't mean the graphics either just the thing as a whole just looks off.
I think the ESO version is better; I just like how the city feels and flows and look more like a trade city now.
i agree with you that skyrim is a lot more beautiful but as far as play ability goes i think eso takes the cake. i actually get to play with my friends this time around and make new ones that will encourage me to actually get back on the game after ive finished the main story lines.
Your not playing it then.
ive been in every eso beta test and ive been gaming it up since day one of early access. so if you were referring to me as the one thats not playing it you couldn't be more wrong. i also have more than 1000 hours put into morrowind oblivion and skyrim.
I mean if you bag it your not allowed to play it..
And the Robots somehow came back to life and started to kill anyone who was trespassing in the dungeons.
screw cars when you have dragons, and magic powered horses!!! those 5 legged miracles can climb anything!
I mean, look at the world in 20,000 BC (CE) Until Christ was born which is 20,000 later there wasn’t much progress done either… Renaissance gave us the world we have today. eg. cars, planes etc… Renaissance happened in around 1500-1600 AD.
really srew cars when you can become a dragon in skyrim
Simeey Really? fucking really?
Skyrim looks much better but you can't expect a MMO to look as good as a RPG like Skyrim.
I have to say that Skyrim is faaar better and nice looking game.
Well ESO is an mmo so if they gave it skyrim-like graphics the frame-rate would probably be shit.
1 footstep is the size of half a body, it looks really weird.
i like the atmosphere of eso riften i.e. its more lively; however, i prefer the look and feel of skyrims riften
In the ESO version the Greybeards didn't exist yet lol.
The Greybeards were formed in the first era while ESO takes place in the 2nd. Ya you're totally right they didnt exist yet.

***** You should really have a understanding of something before you talk about it, thats two cases now.
Dicksmack jones

***** Well, atleast ill do something with my life.
I know it's an MMO and all, but that lighting is awful. Dear God, I hope we don't have long to wait for another real Elder Scrolls game.
You will have fairly long to wait, fallout 4 is the current project Bethesda is working on.
spaceageGecko You realize that Bethesda didn't work on this game? Zenimax Studio's is the developer of ESO, and has nothing to do with the development of Fallout 4. Bethesda has been working on Fallout 4 since before TESV even came out. It will most likely be announced at E3 this June, and released next fall/winter.
LILpiecesCOMITY I know i was just telling the guy that there will be some time to wait. I'm going to rephrase my last comment.
To be honest i like the skyrim textures better it just males the game feel a bit scary and creepy like the game kinda is suposed to be. The TES online is just a bit to bright for my preferences.
mmo's are usually bright to fit the fantasy look of the game
Ryan Brecht usually they are but they really didnt have to make the game that bright, in the new trailer they released everything whas dark and that is how a TES game is supposed to look.
I think it makes the world seem more fantastical, saying that the shivering isles was may favourite setting in the series to date. Everybody has there own preferences tho :)
Matt Last well saying that was skyrim not a fantasy? It's because of the graphics capacity for a MMO like that
I sure hope they include Mai'q the Liar in eso
Found him a few times already, im pretty sure they even have an achievement for finding him in all locations
Where are all the '1000 years' shit arguments now?
blaiblou Mai'q isnt even part of the lore, he's more like a part of the development of The Elder Scrolls games.
Riften sure did compress later on in Skyrim's history then. Wonder why.
Does Skyrim take plase after ESO?
Sean Stanley
no, takes place before any of the Elder Scrolls games.
Sean Stanley Yes, obviously. Wish you soldier worshipers would learn some independent research and literary skills, jesus.
Sean Stanley Skyrim take place after ESO (thousand years)
How does it take place after Skyrim when Skyrim takes place in the 4th Era and ESO takes place in the 2nd Era?
The map looks so much cleaner then is Skyrim
ESO is set 800-1000 years before Skyrim. Do not compare a city mostly made of wooden houses and looking for similar locations please. This comparison is kind of laughable....

Looks great! of course it's not amazing but who was expecting that? I'm excited to get my imperial edition on Xbox One!
Skyrim looks so much better !!
If both games were mixed we should have great game :D
Skyrim Riften looks like it had rough, compacted log cabins. ESO Riften looks like something out of Jade Empire. What the hell is up with the Chinese influences?
When I was like level 15 I just had a quick look in the Rift are to see how Riften looked like. :D I was killed very quickly but it was totally worth it. :D
Why even compare them? They are so different that I don't see a point in that video at all.
Max Grundström
1. Depends. If you like Elder Scrolls, then no. At least now. If you want MMO, then maybe you could like it.
2. For PC, you can buy in the official site or in the Steam (Steam all the way of course)
+Max Grundström "how do i get the game" I also wonder this
from a game store like gamestop or EB games or steam or whatever place has games
from a game store like gamestop or EB games or steam or whatever place has games
Robert Breeden And the render distance. Objects constantly fade in to view in front of you, and fog limits your vision way too much.
I think the graphics are as good as oblivion's from the time I've been in the beta.
Think you need to go boot up oblivion then go load up Oblivion then go load ESO. ESO is much, much better looking. But hey time tends to distort perception, I know I've loaded up some old game and have gone "I don't remember this looking so bad" lol
Adhal memories are in HD xD
Riften is my favourite town in Skyrim Im happy you made this video.
Wow, nice comparassion between TES IV:Oblivion and TES V:skyrim
Zenimax onlines riften pisses me the fuck off they screwed up the lore and locations
guy, eso timeline takes place about 1000 years before skyrim. 1000 years is a very, very long time. And in 1000 years world can change a lot.
I really don't get why everyone is complaining about this game. Personally, I think this game looks amazing and I can't wait to play it.
I'm sick and tired complaining about the game based solely on the the fact that it doesn't have as good of graphics as skyrim and it has a subscription.
First off It's an mmo of COURSE the graphics are going to be worse! ESPECIALLY WITH the incredibly large scale PvP! And this isn't even the highest setting which is obvious but people are too stupid to realize that
Second a subscription is THE best way to do an mmo.
But people are dumb so they don't see that (and they think this is a graphical comparison)
And that may have been the case for these games but can you with how good single player games have gotten graphically do you really expect the same quality? (not implying that you do, just making a general statement)
Richard Depaola jr
if you compare warcraft 3 and world of warcraft... wow has alot better graphics.
Comparing just doesnt work that way.
I know im gonna be shamed for this but I like the ESO Riften a little better ...just the look of it!
It's an MMORPG, they had to downgrade.
@ Muffin Man: This proves how little you know about many things...
whaa whaa, they had to downgrade for an MMO, its looks great in its own way.
ESO sacrifice so much of elements other Elder Scrolls games has, in my opinion it's look like another MMO take place in Elder Scrolls universe but lacks of its heart.
riften burned down one time
THe Reason why eso graphics sucks its because its multiplayer with hundreds of players playing in a server it cant handle to make it hd because it has to animate so mutch.
Sorryfor my english it is not my native language.
Nicfire10 actually guild wars 2 looks better and its older so thats not why they did it its more cause of low end pcs could play it to so they earn more money and selling more copys of the game
mmorpg is pretty much a money flow for the game company that creates a mmo ofcourse a mmo cant look as good as a single player game cause of many players and animation but thats not what they did with teso
ok
Nicfire10 The grphics don't suck, I run it maxed with AntiAliasing 1080p 60fps. No other mmo even comes close to this games graphics.
bionic3500 TESO is more bigger than Guild Wars 2. Think before talking out of your ass.
Idk what the big deal is, I like the way things look in ESO
So, Mistveil Keep used to be a Fighter's Guild hall?
i guess it burned down, since in skyrim its stone.
Riften in TES Skyrim was the best city, mysterious and very living at the same time, with a very cool autumnal atmosphere.
The Online game made Riften loose its charm, it looks too different, too big (the houses are too far away from each other) and not as mysterious as it was.
I know that the TESO events happened many years before skyrim and of course it's not supposed to be the same city but i'm disappointed as i felt in love with this city in Skyrim.
well its not bad, but its not great either. I prefer the skyrim version of Riften personally
I didn't think it was possible to strip away so many graphical elements.
it looks that way because your are viewing a rendered and uploaded version of the game that is being streamed to you
Skyrym looks better if ask me. Both look great but skyrum got just more details ithink
skyrim had much more detail ,love and care were put into it and you can see it,i think i would rather go back and play skyrim if it had a coop mode
i must say that online has much more detail because it also has much bigger area to have detail on that 1 continent
I don't like that all the places in ESO is so big, It just feel so wierd.
ESO needs to be bigger, so that there can be more people in an area, not just the one player - you.
I know, I just don't get the same feeling when it's so big
I think the point of this video was to show how the architecture in Riften changed over time. Not to compare graphics.
tbh I find Skyrim better lol
Skyrim looks so different from Skyrim. I hardly recognize Skyrim in Skyrim while playing Skyrim on Skyrim in Skyrim.
i feel like any second the narrator will sass at me
Why does ESO look so much worse than Skyrim? Skyrim came out in 2011...
Is it just me or does skyrim look better then eso?
Is it just me, or do you not know how MMOs work?
Omni Codex yes i do know but i still think it could look better.
TheJoeyland It "could", but they're not designing it for people with bleeding edge PCs, they're designing it for the largest audience possible.
Did people honestly expect TES5 graphics on ESO? I mean, come on, be realistic, we've only come so far in technology. Personally, I think it looks great, and much better than what I was expecting, especially taking it to account the amount of players in can house in one go :)
Sky rim looks better I'm keeping skyrim :)
don't forget all those mods.
You may as well just mod in a multiplayer mod and there ya go. Elder Scrolls Online.
i kinda want a game like eso that takes place with riften burning down
what the hell they look nothing like each other..
There's nearly 1000 years between this game and Skyrim you imbecile.
***** i know that but the guys who made the video seem to don't...
