Thank you Animal Facts! I love big/giant dogs and always wanted one.... however, because of all the reasons you listed, I am happy that I chose a small doggie... 🙂

I appreciate the beauty and power of big dogs, but I prefer small ones myself.

We use to own German shepherds when I was younger. I hav, gradually stepped down to smaller breeds. A little easier.

From what I've read Gaints tend to be less energetic and have less stamina than the medium to medium large size dog breeds. While they do need exercise they usually don't need as much as say a GSD for example. Guardian instinct tends to be a mixed bag. Espessiley if you take into account how far they may or may not go if their bluff is called. I do believe that alot of them do enjoy or at least have a soft spot for young kids however. The Leonberger you mentioned, from everything I've read and seen online they tend to be really good with kids and bonds tight with the Family. Probably a great deterrent, but may possibly be to Gentle natured for a top level guard dog.

Dogs have to be trained at a young to be guard dogs. Relying on their instincts is just messy and often results in annoying behaviors. You only need to teach them when they are young though.

A small dog like the Jack Russell I lived with for 6 years, is hard for me to live with. I want to move on to owning a giant dog that is used for guarding, because my life with owning a Jack Russell is still a threat to me, & I need a giant dog that can put a STOP to it.
