How NOT to make a Lenormand deck (and how to choose a good one)

  • Many artists are making Lenormand decks that are pretty...but are they functional? Here is a plea to artists who are making Lenormands, with features that are helpful to readers as well as features that hider or detract from readings.
    If you're inspired to make a Lenormand, please take the time to watch this video. It may save your butt. There are a lot of Lenormand decks coming out, some of them lovely or very cute but impossible (or at best, challenging) to read as a Lenormand oracle. This video shows basic features that are necessary to fast, functional readings, and what to avoid in decks. This is the information nobody tells you but what readers complain about in their frustrating decks.
    What are Lenormand readers looking for in their cards? Is your deck prioritizing a cute theme over its potential reading ability? Does it have the necessary features to provide fast, CLEAR readings?
    This video will also be useful to people new to Lenormnand who are wondering what image features will make a good, working deck. Are you ready to buy your first decks? Here are features to consider looking for.
    This is one of my longer videos, but this 27-minute video may save your tushie and prevent you from spending weeks creating a deck that is perhaps quite cute, but considered unreadable by most Lenormand enthusiasts familiar with the system.
    *Remember: It is not tarot. Lenormand cards are read in clusters.*
    I understand that some people may find this video controversial, but it may save you a lot of trouble to know what features are useful to readers and which features ruin a deck's ability to provide a decent reading. I hope it assists in better deck outcomes with clearer reading potential.
    I provide visual comparisons between functional decks and difficult-to-use decks so you can see the difference how each performs in a large spread. By the end of this video, you'll see why simplicity and clarity override fancy themes or busy, pretty pictures.
    ALSO.... I've since added a

    Glad you ironed that out. There is a hunger these days for decks with a lot of " whimsy " and mysterious symbolism all over them. Tarot is absolutly swamped with such decks. It's 'great that you educate people to use to the pure Lenormand and avoid being seduced by fancy exotic artwork. I think there are two types of reader - professionals who simply want a reliable tool for the job.. and collectors who really love the artwork even if it looses it's original form and strays.

    I can see the point you have made with this video, indeed it's one of the reason I like Lenormand so much, due to its almost laser precision accuracy. It stood out even more clear when you showed some "chaotic decks" compared to the "uncluttered ones." In my opinion, you've made your point here in this video. I appreciate you're sharing this valuable information, thank you :)

    This video is so helpful, as someone who has been crafting an oracle that's a lot like the Lenormand - across your videos, I've been reflecting a lot on how distinct these types of oracles are from Tarot, because I've struggled to make that transition (I started with Tarot) and have been confused at how I can barely seem to read my own deck. It truly is a different model of processing intuition and thoughts and, as I learn more here with you, I am able to engage my oracle more deeply and openly

I am falling in love with Lenormand it is on point and I have had my deck for 3 weeks and I quickly got into it thanks to you! Great video and very informative. It also illustrated very well why a clean design is very important with large spreads. The more clutter you have in each card the more chaotic the overall spread ends up being.

    Ah, if only I'd watched this yesterday. I fear I bought a new deck that is not going to be clear. Maybe I can send it back? Very informative. Unfortunately, we can't always see all the cards in the deck before we buy but this was really helpful. Thanks so much.

    Very informative. I've been working on my own mini Lenormand (held my breath then sighed with relief during this video), gave me the reinforcement. I am so used to destroying multiple drafts as my inner critic cracks the whip but have stayed true to simplicity and I think I may finish this one without too many scrapped cards ♥

    I haven't finished your video but I am loving your ideas. I'm on the same page. That's why I haven't yet found "my" deck. I also made one to use in the mean time from a playing deck from Hawaii. :) But I didn't think of whiting out things. Ingenious. Mine are just red or black sharpie over the center of the cards. Anyway, my search continues, but you've given me some great thoughts. Thank you.

    Thanks for this video! As a beginner, I usually give preference to decks that look more traditional. I ordered the Blue Owl Lenormand last week, and am interested in the Primal Lenormand, because it looks so beautiful and interesting. :)
    And it is a bit shocking that people who don't know Lenormand make decks. That's something I'd never thought of. lol

    Thank you for sharing such important information. I've yet to make my first Lenormand purchase, so I'm glad I watched this video before making a mistake with an artistically pretty deck but one that's not practical for reading. I hope to find a deck with a nice balance of both. Keep up the fantastic videos, I certainly do enjoy them!

    if you are a reader.. you know the objects already... it is not for teaching the querent... just master the cards you have and work on them.. I am sure it is very doable❤️I truly see what you mean about the "cluttered" cards👍

      Cluttered cards can get by in small layouts, but they fall apart in the Grand Tableau.

    Really useful & enjoyable! you might find The enchanted lenormand oracle by Caitlin Matthews & illustrated by Virginia lee interesting! They have a LOT of background details, but they practiced a kind of cool artistic distancing. The background details are tiny & sort of flow together a lot, the foreground is a bubble. So each 'bubble' or bubble like area, pulls the symbol out and is only the symbol for the most part. Its a very interesting device, plus she still has the pips on the cards as partof the background, albeit tiny. My only gripe with the deck is that I just HATE cross card because it looks soooo much like crossroads. I think they tried so hard to make the card not scary or something that it has become hard to read. I've literally considered modge podging over it but then I am concerned it might mess with proper shuffling. Other than that, I think its a good deck.

  • @MarilynFromTarotClarity

    I was under the impression that the pip and court inserts were originally put on the cards so that the Game of Hope could also double up as playing cards. It was a clever marketing ploy, and the inserts were not relevant to the Lenormand meanings. From what I know of interpreting playing cards, it's hard to reconcile the meaning of the playing card inserts with their respective Lenormand image. So I guess what I'm asking is, why are the inserts desirable if they were not intended to be part of the Lenormand meanings but rather to make them utilitarian enough to double up as playing cards? Especially since it's the simplicity of the Lenormand symbol that makes them readable. I hope I explained myself clearly so that I made sense. :) Thank you :)

    Love your channel & how much information you provide. I was attempting to read my first Lenormand spread and the cards didn't have the suit nor playing card number associated within in grrr. Which for the yes no spread I was attempting made it impossible!
    I hate to waste money on decks not shiny at all.
    I'm going to look at some of your suggested decks and especially for Melissa's!

      Thank you very much, Sherry Shone. I hope Melissa puts her deck back in print. She already did one re-print round on it, and that second batch sold out, too. It's one of my favorite go-to decks because the images are so easy to read. Enjoy the cards!

    • @DivineWhispers
      @DivineWhispers  7 лет назад +8

      Michael Winemiller They really do matter for this Oracle. A LOT. If you plan on doing large spreads like the Grand Tableau, these features will make or break your readings.
      For 3 card readings you can get away with more, but too much information has to be assimilated in large readings, so it makes all the difference in the world.
      I definitely know my decks.

    • @SelonaParisa
      @SelonaParisa 6 лет назад +5

      Michael Winemiller I agree with you, every Lenormand deck is readable, one just has to have a connection to it and really take the time to learn his deck by heart and not jump on new ones too quickly. Just because someone has a problem reading a certain deck doesn't mean another one will have the same problem. There is also not just one way of reading Lenormand. Many books present slighting different methods, different people do it differently and are successful with it, it's not set in stone how one supposed to do it.
