It’s quite a shame that Canadian National 3254 isn’t in service anymore. We can still hope that one day in the not too distance future it would return back to operation. It’s famous CN 5 Chime Step-Top Whistle is still being used in many pieces of media to this day.

Unfortunately with 3254 she suffered a substantial crash in the 1940s when she plowed head on into another train. CN was able to rebuild her to her former glory but the chassis was bent and twisted out of shape. They were able to straighten the locomotive out and it ran for quite a career after that. Unfortunately due to the nature of her steel and the heat, weight and continued use. The locomotive’s chassis began returning to its warped state until in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s she started to quite literally rattle herself to pieces during trips. Steamtown decided for the safety of the operators and the locomotive itself, it should be put on permanent display where it sits majestically to this day. But not to worry, they’re currently fixing up CN 3377 her sister locomotive for use as on of the the excursion trains. Safe to say 3254 will probably never grace the tracks again sadly.

@@iangraham6887 I know. It would’ve been great if someone can fixed the frame of the locomotive, which it had since the crash in the 1940s.

@@nathancorcoran5347 I have wondered that too, but as I understand it the more you bend and twist steel the higher the chances of introducing voids and cracks into the grain of the steel. I do hope that’s not the case and that someone would try it, but as I also understand it, there were other problems with the locomotive and tender that need to be addressed as well before it’s truly rail worthy once again.

@@iangraham6887 Exactly, I really like the CN 5 Chime Step-Top whistle that it had around the 1980s. And it now is used in so many pieces of media over the years, all the way to this day. Even though it’s not in operation anymore.

Quite a coincidence this is uploaded 10 years to the day since 3254 last saw steam. While it's a shame she'll likely never run again, she still was a great part of my childhood that even appeared in a short lived tv show by the name of extreme trains.

My father designed that whistle when he was assistant mechanical engineer for Canadian National's Great Lakes Region. He had a friend who was the organist at St. George"s Anglican Church in Toronto. They went in and played 5 part harmonics on the organ until they found the sound they liked. Then measured the length of the pipes to determine the length of the five chambers of the one piece casting of the whistle bell (top). A prototype was made at the Stratford Ontario shops, and a production contract awarded to the McAvity Foundry in St. John New Brunswick. Consequently ot became known as the "Atlantic" whistle.
