  • Shockingly, but quite understandably, jakee decided it was time to retire from VALORANT after one short year in tier 1. I went over his statement and added my thoughts.

I was the person that introduced Jakee to Voltaic and their tac benchmarks, this is really strange since he was so hyped about improving, I wish him the best

Val does seem like a wildly difficult scene to actually get into. All esports are of course but the franchise system just seems shit for the pros and teams compared to a more CS style of scene.

I think franchising could have some significant benefits but it’s all dependent on the publisher exploring those ways of making the scene better with franchising. Sucks the way that they’re treating tier 2, tier 3, the off season, and even mixing tier 1 and tier 2

Need players unions like the NBA/NFL. The only way to negotiate in good faith with these corporations is together as one, true revenue sharing. The way these kids' dreams get exploited is just sad. It's what steered me away from pursuing anything in CS as a kid in the 00s. No job security but you're one of the best at what you do? All of those hours mastering your craft--yea, I can understand Jakee's perspective.

The way trials in valorant go down is also a frustrating process to go through

I think it’s worth mentioning that Jakee said he was making around $6k this season and ~$5550 last season with C9 paying for housing and food. Of course after random misc expenses and taxes, some of that is cut and while it definitely isn’t an appealing number, I would hope that he would end up earning more from bundle revenue.
It’s really unfortunate that jakee made the decision to retire solely off the fact that it wasn’t lucrative enough, despite him mentioning that he believed he could be a really great player in the future.

wtf you can't live with 6k a month in LA that's ridiculous

@@xJay_030 You can though. LA encompasses a huge area. Not all parts of LA are equally expensive. Still expensive relative to other states but point still stands. Not having to pay for food and housing is huge

kinda off topic but im curious about you saying that streaming is a side hustle, as a player, i dont think it interferes on my focus on becoming a better player. as i see it, streaming as a proplayer just adds value at your image and makes you way more "expensive". AND you are still playing the game so you would still be grinding, most teams ask players for a minimum of ranked on a week, so why would you not stream those rankeds ? even if you dont even want to be a content creator, it makes people relate to you and support you way more! and of course, esports are kind of new and what we need is more content so more sponsors come invest and help esports to keep growing. so i dont think streaming is just about making money as a side hustle, its about building a community, adding value to yourself and making esports more reliable for sponsors!

The job of the player in a team is to perform. That should be their only job as this is a sport where winning is the singular goal and metric on which success is judged.
The issue here is when pros aren't making enough money in tier 1. This can lead them to have to focus on doing something else for money, regardless of what it is. This isn't appropriate because the pros should be paid enough that they are free to focus only on their performance for the team, as that's their job.
There's nothing wrong with streaming, etc, if that's what the player wants to do in their spare time, as long as it doesn't impact performance with the team. But the player shouldn't be incentivized to do this because they don't make enough by being on a tier 1 team.
Streaming can easily become a distraction as the focus isn't entirely on your performance, it's now also on entertaining viewers. There's a reason why you don't see the majority of the best players streaming frequently--it'll usually be during off-season, breaks, etc. There are many who do it, but there's also a sense in esports that your career will be short and could end at any moment, so that's another reason why players do it. If we're talking about maximizing performance of the player, as is their job to achieve, streaming isn't helpful for this aim. So this is another way in which it qualifies as a side-hustle-- you are spending your free time diversifying your income to mitigate the risks of the profession. That free time could be spent on: friends and family, personal interests, recovery, introspection, healthier habits, etc.
I'd argue that you could spend less time playing which is more recovery. If you do spend time playing in your free time to improve performance, you would have higher returns if your energy was solely focused on the improvements you're looking to make as opposed to putting energy into chat, being entertaining or watched.
We don't live in the ideal world of course, but I think in jakee's situation the money aspect has to be really difficult as I know C9 were paying them the league minimum which isn't liveable in LA, honestly, and you could make more doing so many other jobs that don't require that level of niche expertise.

can you make a video about the future of FPS and the cheater epidemic across all FPS. also what does playing constantly vs cheaters do to your mindset as a player. i remember way back playing esl with aequitas(CSS) and some players from the enemy team said they cheated(i knew them from scrims) because they said "2 of my teammates" cheated as well. i don't know how i describe this accurately, but this moment sort of crushed my motivation. at that point it wasn't about winning or losing anymore, it was just about who is cheating and who isn't.
also do you really think that guy in charge of the AI Anti-Cheat is actually capable enough to pull it off? i mean he's been sitting on it for how long and it only bans players that maxed their DPI and dtarted spinning without cheats...
how will DMA cheats affect anti cheats since they are regarded as undetectable? is that the current streamer setup?😂
i am sometimes coming across some shorts from haix and he literally embodies now how i felt way back then.
