  • In this video I make a simple Wooden Mallet for woodworking out of some scrap wood from an old sofa and an old broom handle. I decided to make it in an unconventional way using dowel to secure the handle and it worked out well. The Mallet is very strong.

I reckon if you had enough of the beech wood you could sell loads of these as they look super , I would definitely buy one for my father in law he loves hand made tools like this

Thank you very much for the compliment 👍🏻 I wish I had more of the beech and more of the broom handle. If my dad has some more of the beech I might make a few more I need to see what he has left from the sofa.

    Looks great Phil.
The handle could be ash and the head light oak or beech. But trust me when I say, I’m useless at knowing what wood species are!!!

Thanks Ian 👍🏻 a few others have said Beech too. Yea I thought the handle might be either Ash or Oak. I need to find some more scraps of wood like this 😁

Hi Phill great use of an old sofa, 😀 the timber looked like Beech on the head which is prefect for a mallet as it's rock solid, the handle looks like European oak. :)

Thanks Karl 👍🏻 thanks for identifying the woods I wish I had some more of the broom handle but I've ran out now 😆

They normally slant the sides on a mallet not sure if it’s just for looks or the ergonomics.

Yes I watched a video about that it's to make lighter work for your elbow the slight angle just makes it easier to strike downward as less movement is required. I thought about doing it but I thought it might ruin the look. I will make a few more mallets soon and try out slanting the sides.

Thanks for the info Tom 👍🏻 I didn't know about this. It does makes sense now you mention it.

That came out really good Phil, I see you got a chance to try out your new belt sander lol. If you made these hammers and sold them I would definitely buy one from you. Are you thinking of selling any of them

Thanks Chris 👍🏻 yea the belt sander is pretty good I'm pleased with it so far. I think if I did make more I would change the design as it did take a while to make especially using the scrap materials. Although it is an idea 🤔
