    There's a trick I found some years back for the trem arm on the original Edge. Take the arm out and carefully heat the bushings up with a lighter. Go around them evenly. They will discolor, but they work just fine. It expands them and they provide more tension. You can do this over and over again. I've been using the same bushings for years now and it stays where I want it to while playing, unless you flail the guitar around of course.

    • @ACMusic
      @ACMusic  3 года назад +4

      Really?? Do I keep the bushings on the trem arm while I hold the flame under them?

    • @X5SmileX1X
      @X5SmileX1X 3 года назад +14

      @@ACMusic Yes, really. I once saw a video where Steve Vai's tech mentions it. You keep the bushings on the arm. I don't think it would work if you took them off. Heat them for a few seconds while moving them in the flame to spread the heat evenly. They will discolor and get some soot on them, but you can wipe off the soot before you put the arm back in. The black paint on the arm might flake off a little over time, it will still work just fine though. The arm will be tighter to insert, since the bushings expand. This is the fix that works for me. If you're looking for a permanent fix you might want to have a look at the Red Bishop Magik Arm. It's a Japanese product designed by the former chief Engineer of Ibanez. It replaces the trem arm and socket with one that has a push in arm with tightening collar you can adjust. Supposed to have the same arm angle and feel without any slop.

      This didn't work for me. What did work for me was to take the bushings off, put some nail polish on the bar, and put the bushings back on. The polish will make the bar fit snugly in the bridge. Hope that helps anyone who reads this!

    I have ended up with 3 JS models this year out of nowhere... Started with a JS2410 (New) then I spotted a JS2480 (used) while browsing the net and finally ended up with a JS1000 (used) to complete this little collection. I have swapped out the zinc blocks for Hantug brass blocks on all and installed locking tuners plus MXR style coloured knobs! The brass block does improve the already fantastic Original Edge and I upgraded just because I like to tinker.

    I've been eyeing with the Genesis 550 in purple for a year then I went to a music shop to check it out. It looks just as amazing as I though but somehow it did not feel as good/comfy as my Korean JS100, which is weird because this is made in Japan. So at the end I had to leave it there.

    Great guitars Anthony. Your RG videos always get a click from me. I have the same rg550 in road flare red and a prestige rg752m in desert sun yellow. The two best colors. The prestige is a 7 string so not apples to apples but I always go for that one. The pickups and wiring configuration are just much better and more versatile for my playing. I really like the wider neck on the 7 string more also. RG's are amazing guitars all around though so no matter what one you decide to play it will be fun.

    I know this is a few years old now, but I bought the Genesis Rg 570 in Jewel Blue in part thanks to your video's on the 550 in earlier 2019. I just wanted a solid body version.and glad I got it, cause it was the last one that the major online guitar store had and told me it's the very last one, they had been discontinued due to the original limited run Ibanez was going to do with them. But anyway that aside, same Edge trem, which is by far my favorite Trem but after three years the plastic rings are still managing. my bar isn't "dangling" still pretty tight.. and my guitar came w/ a couple replacement rings, which I have not had to use yet. I do feel by the end of the year I may need to replace them though.. Lately I'm starting to notice just a little slip w/ it.

    I've had my RG550 since 1991. There's not much left of the original guitar, it's had a new neck, new wiring, new pots, switch, pickups, a truss rod cover made from an old Honda motorbike, and it's having a new trem system fitted, as I can't stand the Ibanez trem that's in it. It's pretty beat up, but it still my baby!

    Funny because all of the flaws you find in the Prestige could be seen as advantages by other people. For instance, I much prefer the "all around access heel joint" to the square heel joint of the Genesis. Same goes for the knobs. But one thing is for sure, for the price, the 550 is a much better value.

      The RG550 is only the better value if you keep the stock pickups. The prestige comes with the higher end pickups and a case. If you're spending at least $300 to replace the pickups on the 550 and another $200 for a case, then you're only saving $100 over the prestige, which comes with Dimarzio, EMG, Fishman Fluence, or Bareknuckle pickups, depending on the model you choose. The prestige's body is also made out of more durable wood. Essentially, you'd be paying a $100 premium for the prestige to get an ash body instead of basswood.

    Bought a modded Purple Neon RG550 yesterday. 2018 Genesis, with a Breed, Fast Track 1 and Super Distortion in neck, middle and bridge respectively. It was the same colour as the RG550 I owned back in 2010, but sold because I was a damn fool. The scratchplate looks like a leprechaun's sex dungeon, so I gotta do something about that, but other than that it's perfect.
    Been in love with the purple RG550 ever since I saw Alan Lennon play one in a 2003 Jemfest video that I had uploaded here on RUclips for years before it was taken down for some strange reason.

    I have an Ibanez RG that I bought in 2002 and also a prestige that I bought in 2011, both were made in Japan. The action in the 2002 RG can be set super low without any string hitting the frets, it's also more comfortable and fast. The prestige has a better "quality feel" better pickups and the Edge Zero trem is also great once you learn to set it up to your liking. I have 2 Strats, 2 Ibanez RG and 2 Music man JP. For me the best guitar I have is the JP11 7 string, it does everything amazing and the quality feel is above the others. The other Music Man I have is a JP15 6 strings, it's also great but it's a little bit "brighter". One aspect that I like more about the RGs is that they are better for arpegios and shred stuff

    It's funny, I bought (well, my GF at the time bought it for me) an '89 RG. I don't remember which one it was, but it essentially the same guitar, but no pickguard and body-mounted pickups. Then we moved from Baltimore to Minneapolis and I walked into a music store and saw a black used '87 RG550 and gave it a go and completely fell for it. My RG (let's call it a 560) was pristine. The RG550 was very well played! I mean, it must have been a famous to semi-famous player who gigged it a lot. The finish on the fretboard was worn and stained. So I traded my newer pristine RG560 for a two year old 550 and STILL had to pay them about $100 as I recall. They knew that 550 was something special, and it still is to this day. Incredible tuning stability, versatile, and reliable. It has never ever needed a setup. That's about 33 years of use!
    When Ibanez reissued the RG550s, I finally got my dream color of the Desert Yellow. Love it completely. The tuning stability isn't quite as good as my old one, but I think it just needs breaking in. I'm also using ebmm Cobalts on it. I may try D'Addarios on it. They worked so well on all my guitars, but I really do like Slinkys and have moved everything over to them over the past 6 years or so. I break them less often than the others. Truthfully, I've never met a string I didn't like.
    Back on track - I go my RG off Reverb for $899 ($100 off new) and it still had all the plastic on it with nary a scratch on the peel-off plastic. THEN, it shipped in the premium case (leather caps on each end, gold hardware ) which sell for $160. Fantastic deal.
    Really fun to swap back and forth between the two. Ugh, what great all-around guitars!

    I was really suprised that you preferred the neck heel of the Genesis over the AANJ of the Prestige. I have both (also RG550 Gen and a JEM Jr) and although the Genesis angled neck plate LOOKS so much cooler and I'm totally in love with the RG550, it feels so bulky to me and makes it really hard to reach the upper frets. What about the flutteryness of the Prestige's trem? I'm thinking about getting an RG3570z some time but I fear that the trem lacks the bouncyness of the Original Edge. You can remove that extra stabilizer, right?

    Got my Neon Purple RG550 about two months ago, finally! Absolutely LOVE this thing!! This is definitely the best SuperStrat that you can buy for less than +1,500 bucks. The two things that I love about it are: 1) I can't stop staring at it! And 2) I can't put it down!
    The only real con, is that it doesn't come with a case. But that's how they keep the price at a ridiculously low $999. Ibanez sells a great case for about $150, the MC300 or something, and it's cut specifically for the RG & S series. It even has a TSA lock.
    I thought I would change the strings as soon as it arrived, but the D'Addario 9's that it comes with are effin great. I usually play on Ernie Ball Extra Slinky 8's. I can do minor third bends all day long.
    I wanted to get it Plek'd by Sweetwater, but since I was trying to keep the price as low as possible, I opt'd out. I went solely with the free, standard 55-point inspection that they perform on all guitars sold. All I've had to do to her is to drop the action a smidge. The radius was setup perfectly. I assume that the J. Custom folks do all of that before they let one leave the shop.
    I might change the pups at some point, but I would consider that to be more of a change/customization, than an upgrade, as the stock pups are pretty great, especially for distortion.

    6:46 you can easily replace the knobs with "classic" ones, i did that in my 2550 Prestige.
    4:47 I could not understand why you prefer the bulky heel over the AANJ. I am asking this because that is exactly one of the features (probably the main one) that kept me away from the Genesis. AANJ should be more comfortable for the high frets, why do you prefer the bulky one?
    Also, the newest bridge (the z or zps) should be an improvement over the edge. I have never played the edge and I am wondering why some people prefer this to the zps. If you like to do the "trills" you can remove the zps (it should be easy). At that point it should work exactly like an edge but you still have the advantage of a wheel adjustable bridge. I think I am going to do this on mines. So, I am curious to know if the tuning stability is significantly worse in the Genesis and what other drawbacks are coming without the zps (e.g. I guess the bridge will move a lot more when you do bendings).
    Thanks in advance if you will help me understand. Maybe one day I will have a chance to try a Genesis and compare it to my Prestige

      Besides the corner of plate you get in your hand from the 550, it also restricts your thumb from going any further forward than the 16th fret, where the AANJ allows to the 18th. Total dealbreaker for me as well. More ridiculous "throwback" purism.

    If the Prestige is double the price it has to have something going for it. The pickups and trem stabilser will add to the cost and make it an even more professional level instrument. But I don't think that justifies twice the price. The Genesis is made in Japan and even though you don't get a case with it, the instrument itself drips quality rights out of the box. Getting that MIJ quality at just shy of Euro 1K is great value. I can see why you like it (I have it in Desert Yellow). Not sure I agree with the heel block though. It's there for authenticity since it's a re-issue, but I when I first played it and ran into that wall it took a bit of getting used to, especially since my cheaper Ibanez all have a rounded heel for better access.

    • @ACMusic
      @ACMusic  3 года назад +1

      Yes, my comments on the heel seem to be surprising to people. I never knew the heel was slightly tilted on a 550 until I tried one in the shop. It's become my number 1 guitar. Apart from the plastic rings on the arm wearing down quickly, everything is perfect for me. :-)

    It blows my mind to hear someone that prefers that squared heel over the Wizard neck. I love mine, and I'd take that Wizard neck joint on any guitar that has a bolt on neck.
    Preferences are weird, and I just can't imagine what you're feeling that I'm not when you play them.

    • @ACMusic
      @ACMusic  2 года назад

      Haha a lot of people come to me with the same comment. I think what happened was that I had guitars with the smoother heel for years. Then I saw a 550 for the first time and just loved the way the slanted heel looks. Maybe my brain just THINKS I like the feel more just because I like the look more.

      @naegleriafowleri2230 3 года назад +1

      They only do maple fretboard fret end work on the Signature Jems, they do this with a machine, and on the Jem premiums and J custom, they do it by hand. The difference here is the J custom is done by Japanese workers and the Jem premium by Indonesian, where quality of works is lower. That's the only way you will get a maple with fret end work by Ibanez. Even with a machine, it takes work to do as maple has a finish, let alone by hand, they will never give you this on a $1000 budget guitar LOL there is no money in it like the J custom or Jem signature MIJ. Only reason the jem premiums get it is cause indo labor is cheaper. So, just buy a fret end dress files, some sanding files and do it yourself. I did this and is not that hard. One the rosewood, they do it by machine on all prestiges because it doesn't take as much precautions as with a maple fretboard, only the $3500 jems are done by machine, not even hand. Only the j custom is done by hand. Premium is done by hand but dont expect great results.

    • @naegleriafowleri2230
      @naegleriafowleri2230 3 года назад

      In fact, in all Prestiges, Ibanez used to include "fret end treatment" under their specs and marketing, now they dont cause they got called out on their bullshit, first of all, no maple prestige gets any fret end work and only rosewood do, but with a machine, so is nothing great. Fret edge treatment my ass, the only ones that get any real fret end treatment are j custom imo

    You should have gotten yourself an RG655. It were more of a mid-range Prestige than the one you got.
    Just think of it as an RG550 with an AANJ and DiMarzio pups. Still has the Original Edge trem like the Genesis. Also, that Z-trem system is an abomination and is only good for increasing the price of the guitar while decreasing its performance.
    I were shopping for a Genesis RG550 where the store also had an RG655 Prestige hanging on the racks next to them. I was figuring a pickup swap into consideration with the price of the Genesis, but the RG655 already had better pickups baked-in. Between fit and finish, the pickups, and overall feel, the RG655 won out and that's what I went home with.
    I say this already having a couple of 90s RGs (RG560 and RG570), hence wanting to complete the trifecta with an RG550.

  • @iduncanw

    I really want to compare these:
    RG550
    RG652AHM
    RG5120M
    Looking for a long term guitar for metal.
    Played the RG652AHM last week for a little bit. The neck was buttery smooth.
    Hoping to try them other two this week but they are not in the same shop as the 652.
    The store had the yellow, red and purple RG550 and within about a week the yellow and purple have gone.
    The RG5120M is over 20% off, but still about AUD$1000 more than the RG550.
    The RG652AHM is in the middle price wise.
    Don't know if the Lo-Pro Edge is better than the Edge on the other two?
    Any thoughts on these options?

You remember first witnessing the RG550 hanging on the wall, in different 80s neon colors!! It was calling out to you -- "please take me home." Love at first sight?! Probably! Unfortunately, you were way too young with $0 to your name. Fast forward to 2019 and nostalgia has taken a hold of you. I wouldn't buy new today, i would buy an old 91 RG560, and enjoy that neck, and original edge trem. Same goes for Charvel/Jackson, the 80's and early 90's stuff, is in a league of it's own.
