I'd like to be a fly on the wall at the other gun Co's meetings....."Why the Frikity-frik is Savage ALWAYS beating us to the punch?" Where's my Design team? AHHHhhhh! G>
I like when gun companies bring back old designs and reintroduce them.
It was never gone...
I don't think we ever HAD a straight pull rifle manufactured here in America, probably not ever a hand-crafted, one-off piece from a custom gunsmith. Those tend to use existing, production actions albeit blue printed, "breathed upon" and tweaked, depending upon just how deep your pockets are.
@@rhondohslade the Lee-Navy was made in the US
@@borkwoof696 as most tech is. Its just reintroduce and most people didn't notice it already a thing.
@@rhondohslade lee navy was a cam action. Not straight pull. Similar but not the same
The extra weight would not bother me particularly in 300 Winchester magnum.🤔
Ye
Yes, My Trap gun Weighs 8 Lbs, Try Shooting That For 2 Hours...
Straight Pulls have been around forever in Europe. I'm surprised it took this long for an American company to decide to develop one on this side of the pond...
Not surprised that it was Savage though, they're always up to something interesting!
I may need one of these; I gotta handle one first, should be a really good rifle!
We have had general access to our semi-automatics where they haven't, so out of necessity they have refined to straight-pull in order for the quickest manual action. Old straight-pulls aren't particularly more accurate then even a decent large round AR or M1 or various other automatic actions. Savage hasn't or doesn't want to dive into the automatic action rifle gun market and accuracy from the factory is sort of their thing, so I think it makes perfect sense for them to make this because it is within the same order of magnitude of speed with the auto-action guns, but much less expensive for the same or better accuracy.
@@captainobvious9188 Good points!
@@captainobvious9188 lever release probs faster
Wow, this is getting interesting!
I only know of the browning straight pull bolt action, used once on a driven boar hunt in Bulgaria nice action with the straight pull bolt its good for that quick follow up shot if needed I'm in the uk
Yea sucks ur government took ur semi autos
@@justinlance4174 yes they are also making it harder for us now, as you might we have to apply for a licence for shotgun and firearms which are issued under 2 separate categories shotgun and firearms it used to be easy getting s shotgun certificates but now we have get a medical declaration from our doctors, alot of the doctors refused or they charge you an exorbitant amount for it, without the medical declaration the police will not progress with application or renewal
@@duncanosborne4871 damn man. If u can save up and move to the usa. We need all the gun owners we can get. If not keep up the fight. If there is one left to be made.

Cough Heym SR30 cough!
Basically US made, mass production SR30 with ambi features.
Yup but cheaper and with some upgrades
Better go to the doctor about that cough. It could be CoVid.
@@rhondohslade No i think i have the truth virus.
@@narva8474 hyme sr30=3000dollars. Savage impulse =1300. Less than half. And its more ergonomic. Lightweight ambidextrous and 1 model actually has a removable mag
I Wish They Would Put 2 Sling Studs Up Front On The PREDATOR Model...
Hopefully they come out with sr25 mag and ar15 mag capable.
Should have run an odd number of bearings.
Just saying…
When are they going to be available?
Spring
First one I held was a 18" win mag. Savage must have hired some clowns to come up with that combination! xD Jokes aside, It's a super innovative rifle and clever receiver design. I'm keeping my eyes peeled and my credit card handy. If it sucks, ill sell it and buy Beretta's BRX1.
Will cleaning in the ball bearing area be difficult? I'm a little concerned about that.
I don’t see why you would have to
Like a G3, from time to time some brake cleaner and blow the dirt out with compressed air. best before cleaning the barrel :D
Actually are all bolt lug recesses bad to clean if you dont have compressed air.
From what little is shown in the animation, I'm not even sure those are ball bearings. No mention of 'ball' bearings is ever made; simply bearings. And for some odd reason I have the feeling they may be roller bearings.
Why does that concern you so?
@@rhondohslade kind of the whole don’t fix what’s not broken? Seems like a regular bolt action rifle has less that theoretically could get dirty or break and for how much time saved? I have no real world experience with the Impulse. I just think it’s an interesting concept. They didn’t mention ball bearings you are right though a few articles I’ve read called them ball bearings. Could be journalist just making the same mistake as me.
Did not expect to see so many haters. You all go grab your junk 700 and save these for me. I want one so bad!!! The fact you can change the bolt side is awesome. I love a right handed rifle being a lefty. Never have to move my hand too far away and they make it even easier to throw some lead.
You're right Rem 700s are junk they need to be trashed
I'm left-handed and I'm going to get one I'm sure it's going to be one hell of a rifle
BALL BEARINGS 😉
A proven technology, despite them not mentioning it.
@@Siskiyous6 Very proven, but Savage "taught the Old dog new tricks". Past the obvious? It's got some really nice features such as their floating bolt head and external barrel nut mounted extension set barrels which previous ball locked straight-pull bolt action rifles didn't have.
I got a Savage Tactical in 300 Win Mag. I was testing it out and was getting case separations. I've been shooting 300 Mag for the last 40 years and never had a problem with case separation. I have the tools to disassemble the barrel from the receiver so that's what I did. The threads were galled on the barrel and the receiver and on the barrel nut. And it was a result of that asinine thread goo that Savage simulated on their computer as being good. I had to use a barrel Vise and wrench to unscrew the barrel nut after the barrel was removed from the receiver which you should be able to do by hand. There was way excessive headspace due to improper setting of the barrel and tightening of the barrel nut. The headspace could not have been set right because of that crap they put on the threads is like dipping the threads in dirt and sand. Making it virtually impossible to correctly set the headspace when the threads are galled on the barrel nut and on the barrel
300 Win Mag headspaces off the belt. If the brass was in good condition it should have just fire formed a bit. You *can* headspace 300 Win Mag off the shoulder but you need the right reamer. I've had plenty of 300 Win brass crack at the belt in all manner of rifles. It has never been super easy on brass especially if you full length resize every time.
@@Buzz407- that Savage wasn't even properly headspaced off of the belt. And it had excessive shoulder length headspace from the belt. Sounds like you're trying to say that that's perfectly acceptable to have too much length from the shoulder to the belt I say it is not acceptable. Having a random length from the belt to the shoulder and having to fire form brass for every different. 300 mag Barrel is retarded.
@@Mike-xi4zt Excessive shoulder length headspace from the belt would mean they had a bad reamer. I've never seen it but doesn't mean it isn't possible. If it was bad it was bad.
Truly though, because of variations in finish reamers over the years, 300 win mag is best neck sized only for the most part. I've seen as much as 15 thou difference in belt to shoulder dimensions on different guns. No idea why, but it is what it is I reckon.
@@Buzz407- Yes there are variances. It is very irritating to buy a new gun and it is stretching expensive brass to the point of not being usable. When there is really no justifiable reason for shipping out out of specification chambered guns. That grinder dust/glue crap they put on the barrel/ receiver/barrel nut that destroys the threads to the gun that is registered to me and paid for by me should not be done by Savage. They are purposely sabotaging the threads on the purchaser's property.
Straight pull ? New ? Austro-hungary steyr mannlicher 1895 !!! Noting new under the sun !!!
I like this idea, but the rifle is too heavy at 8.5 lbs. If they could get the weight to 7.5 lbs. and chamber it in smaller cartridges (.223 or 6.5 Grendel), I think this will sell very well.
As long as you are willing to go with 6.5mm, why not go with the original and soft shooting cartridge? The 6.5 Swedish Mauser at 6.5X55 mm. That is one of the nicest rounds I've ever had the pleasure of shooting.
@@rhondohslade I just mentioned the Grendel because it would be cool to have an AR and bolt gun to share ammo. The 6.5 Swede is great though, I've never used it but it seems like a wonderful round. It's amazing how long ago it was invented, and it's still relevant today.
6.5 grendel dumb
@@rhondohslade 6.5creedmore wiuld be a better choice 6.5x55swed is not that popular in the usa.
@@kamferjau 6.5grendel is awesome. Best ar15cartidge available
Oh by way it ways over 8lbs!!! Pass
Would you like a saucer of cream? After all,. You aren't going to be lugging it around for days on end. You aren't going to war with it as an infantry soldier. Besides, as many soldiers in many wars up to less than 50 years ago have proven, a 9+ lb rifle is no detriment to slogging around on foot in the muck and more. You just deal with it. Unless you are one of the new breed who is issued a 'time out' card they carry in their back pocket and use it when the DI calls them a bad name...
@@rhondohslade what a horrible comparison. Soldiers back then carried less gear and a heavier rifle. A hunting rifle on a mountain that is that heavy shows. Don’t forget the part where you remove the game. Point is there is way better rifles for less $$$$ and is lighter and easier mobility. Also so your telling me if I gave a navy seal a 10lb rifle he would out perform another seal with an 7lb rifle. Lighter weapons improve mobility and speed. And I know what carrying a heavy rifle around is all about. Packing a 240B makes any rifle afterwards feel like a toy.
@@SpudOutdoors 🤣🤣🤣 we had a new guy who was a body builder, gave him that 27 lb monster 240B and he loved it. It was like muscle maintenance for him. However ill take lightweight anyday of the week. I weighed 109 lbs more with my weapons and gear on in the suck. My knees cant take that kind of abuse anymore.
I do find it funny for savage to release a new rifle during an ammo shortage. Hell good luck even finding the rifle you want in stock somewhere right now. I cant even find a savage 42....who the hell (other than me) wants a damn savage 42
@@UserFormelyKnownAs_hjkh even dumber they didn’t release it with a 6.5 PRC chamber.
@@SpudOutdoors another bandwagon cartridge, in my opinion anyways. Seems like in the next 3 years we will have every number from .17-700 covered by the thousandth. Respectfully, i could care less about a 6.5 lol
Instead of making new rifles, Savage should be focusing on getting the ones that arent in stock back into the market.
Who the hell needs this? Savage makes many left hand models (I own MANY) and has been innovative in ways other gun makers have not been. At some point though, companies that make firearms, ammo, optics and other sporting goods reach a bit too far in creating demand for something for which there is simply no need. Savage marketing would be FAR better served in other efforts instead of grasping at straws like this.
Cry about it, I'm excited about it myself. Straight pulls are awesome.
I DON'T LIKE CHANGE WHAAA!!!
I like straight pulls. Now there is a American made model that is actually available and reasonably priced. But some people hate innovative solutions
