- Update: After taking all the covers off the engine it was clear that the timing chain guides were overdue. the chain had worn through the plastic, aluminum, and began eating it's way into the tensioner piston. I replaced all three items, as well as valve stem seals while I was in there. all other components were in near-perfect condition. Hopefully this has helped you figure out your 4.6's woes.
Old Description: Hi all, I've been noticing this strange noise coming from my engine that has been becoming increasingly noticeable. This is a 2001 Lincoln Town Car with Ford's 4.6L 2-valve, specifically the Romeo PI version. It has 256,000 Miles on it (412,000 km). The noise is only noticeable during cold starts, and very high RPMs.
I hope someone can give me there thoughts on what the noise could be. So far my best guess is early stages of rod knock.
Recommend the use of headphones.
Thanks in advance. - Авто/Мото
Hello everyone, this symptom along with others has been resolved! Please check the description for further details.
Good luck!
@Carl Turner Check the description.
I listened to that very carefully and you have nothing to worry about. All that is, is a delay of oil getting up to the lifters, so it clatters for a few seconds. Now if the clatter/tap remained even after engine was hot, it would need the lifters replaced, which is still only a valve cover removal issue
So the guides can make that sound only on cold start too huh 🤔 i stopped driving mine for over a year and it doesn’t do it now wonder why ill have to check that out .97 mustang gt only 165k miles
Mine has always done that for almost three years for a short bit when cold. Never had any issues.
If you're above 200k I would recommend you make plans to replace the timing chain guides. It's not too troublesome~
I’ve been going through the commas and so far I haven’t heard anybody come up with the timing chain actuators
My 1999 Crown Victoria has this EXACT sound, only on very cold starts for a few minutes until she's warmed up. Been doing a bit of research and seems like piston slap could likely be the problem
Mine does it only after it's been sitting for a while. It's only for a few seconds too. I've played with the idea of it being piston slap too, but I'm hopping it's something simple in the top end. I hope to get a chance to open it up this summer. We shall see though. Best of luck to you!
I have 4.6 e250 makes noise took apart bearings are not great but not bad piston is worn out it is very loose in cyl
All these possible issues without a direct symptoms, time to trade my Ford back for my old chevy

@@aco2518 just checked, my motor was fully rebuilt at 61 thousand miles and now is at 75k with a ticking only when I speed up, not at idle or anything I can tell it is coming from the driver side of the engine tho, no exhaust leaks at all because all the studs and gaskets where changed out also, I have climbed down there and not felt any leakage, I have cleaned the MAF sensor countless times because something goes wack with the tune and makes a horrible rattle sound, 2nd maf sensor now but the sound is only on one cylnder from the sound of it, I don't feel a missfire or anything just a annoying ticking noise, idk what to do with it
@@Tommysmess one of your plugs are loose or coils fix it before it shoots out
@@jayots7872 they where all tight
Did you ever figure out what it is.
Sadly I haven't had time to do further investigations. I might upload a video, or add an edit to the title and description of this video if I ever figure it out. Good luck to you!
Did u every figure out the problem?
This sounds literally just like mine but I’ve replaced timing chain guides/tensioners and chain, and replaced my “lifters”…. Just buying a new engine
Update: confirmed piston slap after spending 8-900$ trying to fix. Just replace your engine, it’s smarter financially.
Bro said it was his guides and he has 220k miles. I wonder if mine is engine or same issue I stopped driving it for a year and now it hasn’t made that sound at all so I really wonder if keep it or not
@@kingjay3301 yours could be a lifter issue if the noise has stopped. Lifters are easy to work on and relatively cheap so I hope for your sake that it’s lifters. Replacing a motor ran me about 4k after it was said and done
Lifters.
Thanks for the suggestion!
i hear an exhaust leak too
Are you sure? I know what that sounds like, and I've never heard it coming from my car.
I got the same noise in my 3v 4.6 ,I hate it,I think it is the lifters
The 3v is quite a bit different than the 2v in the top end at least. I've read that failing phasers can be noisy, but it's more of a ticking sound. I had a friend suggest it could be an exhaust valve. Not sure how common of an issue it is on these engines, but it seems very plausible. Anyways, thanks for the suggestion.
@@aco2518 to honest I do have an exhaust manifold leak, but only at startup, but I think that most is the lifters
@@MrPami9899 Good luck to you man, I hope you can figure it out.
#8 connector rod bent on my 95 4.6..
Mine made this exact sound. I spent months going through ever possible repair tearing the engine bay apart. I found a ground wire on the wiring harness for the driver side a rat had chewed it off.. anyways I'm going to run over every rat I ever see for the rest of my life.
Oh wow, you think it was causing it to knock? I did find a loose grounding wire as well, it seemed to go on top of the fuel rail.
Also loose spark plugs can make knocking noise i here from others
4.6 2v spark plugs must be torqued to 22ft*lb. Spontaneous injections occur when they've been torqued too low. I did check for it. All tight
I had this and then it just went away last week.
Prob not a good thing lol
Check your ground.
@@Smashachu the vct ground?
@@Smashachu TBH I think mine is a cracked or leaking header. It went away for awhile and came back. I was thinking maybe the change in season or the leak has some kind of variable. Maybe the gasket got hung up and was not slapping around temporarily. I know I am already missing a few bolts on the passenger side header
@@TonicofSonic I've seen a 4.6 4v with a broken secondary chain guide sound exactly like a leaking header before.
