  • I bought the new Rockrider ST 530 and gave it a better look. See where the difference is between the 520 ST

    -------Text------
    The cards have been dealt new.
    Decathlon released a new bike which I ordered picked up and immediately tried out.
    It’s so fresh that the receipts are still on which I’ll take off.
    There it is the All new Rockrider ST 530 it costs in Europe around 380 €. I asked myself what most people asked, is the additional charge from the 520 worth it?
    Let’s find out.
    The Frame and the Geometry didn’t change, but we got a new painting. The first difference is the additional 20mm, so we got a 100mm fork upfront which unfortunately isn’t tapered.
    We still have an 80mm long stem and a narrow 680 bar. On which we find a new brake a hydraulic disc brake from tektro filled with mineral oil, which is more service friendly than dot fluid. The Brake calliper looks good as well.
    The shiftlever is from Rockrider which I don’t like. It’s personal the shifter feels wrong the ergonomics are just off for me. And we can only pull for upshifting.
    On the other side of the bar many of you are missing something.
    The Shifter
    Reason being this Rockrider has a 1x drivetrain which means we got only one gear in the front in this case with 32 Teeth. Benefits are less clutter failure points and weight (we save around 500grams)
    The downside is a smaller range which this bike compensates with a 9-speed cassette and a 42 cog.
    This means you can ride quite easily uphill and fast downhill although not as easy as with the old setup.
    Accommodated with this comes our new Rockrider derailleur which is a microshift derailleur.
    A huge deal is the clutch which can be switched on or off. I show you what it does.
    This Clip is with the clutch turned off so like a normal derailleur, aand we dropped the chain.
    If we turn the clutch on, the chain tension is higher, the chain slap smaller and the bike quieter, we don’t drop the chain as well.
    Our chain also drops because of this narrow not so narrow chainring instead of a narrow wide ring.
    We also got a Square tapered bottom bracket which is okay for this price but could be a bsa which is upgradeable.
    Last but not least Tyres and rims.
    The rims are tubeless claimed (with the conversion) but the tyres didn’t change.
    We still got 27,5 Inch wheels which are paired with 2Inch wide tyres. Although We have enough clearance for 2,2 Inch tyres at least in the back which I would recommend if you want to go into the woods.
    I tried the bike and derailleur off camera, before I started, I bedded the brake pads in, which means we accelerate to a good speed around 20-25 km/h and apply the brakes without locking the wheels. Repeat that 10-20 times and your brakes will have the most power and will wear even.
    So, what’s the Conclusion.
    I rode this bike on an easier Terrain one which most of you ride and I can say it works.
    This time the bike was properly set up from the beginning, the rear derailleur works fine the chainring could be wider, and I wish for a 30 tooth in the front for real use in the woods since I have steep hills. For “normal “use or more tarmac the 32 is fine.
    Although the brakes aren’t strong enough for some one finger breaking, they are powerful enough be sure to break those pads in.
    All in all this bike is definitely worth the money and I do recommend it over the 520 if your budget allows it, however it still is no real mountain bike but it gets as close as possible for this price.
    But! go and try the bike first, I personally had a strange feeling sitting on this bike, although It’s the right size. And be sure that the maintance and wearing parts cost more than from the 520.
    I hope you found this video interesting or at least entertaining

    great bike! i hope u have enjoyable rides with this. if u dont like the shifter try to tilt that shifter block a bit upwards. also if u get in trouble shifting 1st gear, and chain gets off, tighten the Low screw on your derailleur. do this until you get to 1st gear and still press the lower shift lever. if it doesnt gets off then ur good. and fine tune with the screw at the shifter. i do this adjustments even after bike mechanic checks my bike cuz they check the bike only when hanged. not when a bike gets loaded and stressed. i have a 530s and its a good climber and jumps well.

    One more question man ! This bike as i know has 9 gear transmission level. Do you think it can catch the speed levels of 21 or 24 transmission levels (Mostly in asphalt roads we need some speed like 30-40 km/h, mostly i will drive that bike in city, i want to buy MTB bcs i love their designs). (I think speed is mostly related to gear ratios more than transmission levels) And... The worst thing i dont like in this bike that suspension can not be locked, in this price a bike's suspension should make this :(

    • @LifeofMaik
      @LifeofMaik  3 года назад +4

      Of 21 speed for sure, 24 maybe.
      30-40km/h you will need a high cadence around 100 an some seriously strong legs to hold that.
      I run a 32 11-46 casette on my 29er hardtail and can almost never hold on for 30km/h+ except descending.
      Well I disagree, a lockable suspension is not something you normally find around this level, since the fork itself cost around 150€ if not more. Add to that, Wheels, transmission brakes, frame and profit you probably won't find it under 4-500€ if evertyhing else is around the same level.

    Hello, thanks for the review. I have a few questions:
    1. What parts of the bike would you recommend upgrading or replacing? Do you have any general recommendations about the bike?
    2. Is the fork good enough? Or do you think it is worth it upgrading the fork from a 80mm coil fork to a 120mm air fork?
    3. Is the groupset and good enough for flow trails and other off-road trails? Or would it be better if I upgrade the groupset with higher gears? I only plan on riding trails and roads.

    • @LifeofMaik
      @LifeofMaik  2 месяца назад +1

      1. I would recommend upgrading the tires, but mostly after they are worn.
      2. It is a decent enough fork, you don't need to upgrade the fork unless you want to.
      3. The groupset is definetly enough for flow trails.
      With all you questions I have to remind you: This is a budget, not even entry-level bike.
      If you want to upgrade to a 120mm air fork, tires and maybe even the groupset, its better to look for more expensive bikes, but bikes which are made for trail riding with 29er wheels.

      The 530 has 32/42 so a 0,7619 ratio

      I can't tind any geometry which is useful for the riverside 500 or 900 which share the same frame.
      You're on a good path but reach isn't everything since you're not standing that much like in Mountainbiking.
      I assume the riverside will even be on the longer side since the head tube angle is steeper, so the bars will be further away hence stretching the reach. Play this trough with your hands one being the seat tube one being the steerer tube and tilt them you'll find out that on mtb with a slack head angle you'll need a bigger reach to remain the same effective length for your upper body

    • @LifeofMaik
      @LifeofMaik  3 года назад +3

      Hey Nicholas, great questions
      Starting with the simple answer, the 530 is in my opinion the best new bike in this price point, let's say up to around 500€ (especially if you're willing to change tyres at some point)
      Now to the 29er
      I wouldn't say you are too short for them, I would say this depends on you're riding style.
      If one day you want to be more playful on the bike a 27,5 bike could be beneficial.
      however if you're more into getting miles in or cross country riding or technical terrain 29er simply roll better over stuff and are faster for these applications.
      I hope this is a good enough answer, if not, feel free to ask for more details.

I want to ride in woods mainly but nothing extreme ...just normal hills and classic cycle forest paths (maybe st120 would be sufficient too). • @LifeofMaik
      @LifeofMaik  Год назад

      The 120 has the downside that there are no hydraulic brakes and no derailleur hanger. I advise that you upgrade the bike.
      The lockout on the suspension is only necessary if you ride uphill for a longer time or a lot of uphill standing. As stated the main difference I see is the gearing. If you ride long somewhat steep uphills, normal but steep uphills, or are relatively unfit, the 540 is the better option because of the wider cassette.
      You probably won't notice much of a difference when shifting on a day to day bases. Downhill are both bikes similar, if you get the hydraulic disc brakes for the 530.
      Short: If you ride steep stuff uphill, or want the option of an easy gear, 540. If not you can save the money and go for the 530. Or simply choose the bike based on style if you can't decide.

      I'm 179cm
      If you're not sure about your size, measure and compare your seam length
      If you have longer legs and a shorter upper body go for L
      Vice versa XL

      @cenzura6495 3 года назад

      @@LifeofMaik thx for fast reply. I have to check that. Most of bikes fit in size L for me (19").
      To be honest, I almost bougth giant talon 2ge (29"). Better things inside ect. But on the other hand, I need bike only for city and forest (60%/40%) without any jumping. Ehh... it is not easy choice

    • @LifeofMaik
      @LifeofMaik  3 года назад +1

      Comparing these two is kind of unfair the giant is literally double the price of the rockrider.
      I'm all for a 29er
      But a 1x drivetrain is simply better except you live in a fairly hilly area.
      If you would consider yourself fit or in a relative flat area points would go to the 530
      If you plan on riding more in the woods, or need those easier gears the giant is a better choice. Especially if you compare the frames.
      If it's a commuter bike account that you will wear off your drivetrain way faster and it could get stolen.
      So then the 530 might be a better solution.

    • @cenzura6495
      @cenzura6495 3 года назад

      @@LifeofMaik hah, I know it is unfair! That's why it is hard to decide :) Spend more money for "better" bike (29", alivio, deore, better dumper) but on other hand probably I dont need better bike. The probably is a key here.
      I am completly amatour who has enougth sitting home (homeoffice) and want to go to normall office (bus or trum is nightmar with mask and overcrowded) and time to time to forest for fresh air (2x in week). I live in completly flat area. I have not used bike since ... hmmm.. at least 4years!
      Also it would be my only bike, so as you mentioned - It could be stolen when I would be in work. Price for 530 is 313GBP vs giant for 570 GBP. Price is almost doubled (82%).
      The idea is also UNIBIKE SHADOW (29' altus, 3x9 gears, 440GBP) - looks like compromise between btwin and giant, but I never heard about "unibike" brand.

    • @LifeofMaik
      @LifeofMaik  3 года назад +2

      I never heard of unibike as well.
      For me it sounds like a dilemma.
      a 1x drivetrain is less maintanance, the fork of the giant is better and the frame, not to mention the 29er
      I would decide based on budget, (what do yo want and what can you afford to spend (dont forget you need a proper lock, a helmet, a pump, basic tools))
      If you have enough money ask yourself, if you will ride in the forest, where it is more bumpy or some trails, if yes then the giant, you can ride mountainbike trails on it.
      If not, the rockrider, simply because it has everything you need.
      29 Would suit you better due to your size, but 27,5 has it's more nimble characteristics, which are better for city riding. You can steer faster and accelerate faster.

      Decathlon even states that this bike is not to be used on mountainbike trails.
      Not even cross country trails.
      Reason being the components are too weak to handle major impacts like drops, rocks or roots.
      After using a 520 St for two days on normal trails not Enduro, just normal trails the fork had quite a bit of play in the bushings. That means the fork is damaged and should be changed (at least the bushings).
      The wheel doesn't hold true as well.
      It's enough to ride in the woods and on smaller paths without any high speed or major obstacles.
      For everything else you need to Spend more money for a bike which is capable of doing that.
