- I've always heard about the MAFIA district in Saigon, but up until this video I didn't know much about it. In this walking vlog, I will explain the history around the name, share my thoughts on the district, and of course meet a bunch of locals.

District 4 is known as ‘Khánh Hội’. It is a well known District even before 1975.

When I first moved to Vietnam I lived at an Airbnb for the first few weeks in D4. I had no idea it was considered the Mafia district and I spent my first night there walking the alleys alone lol. I actually met an awesome group of guys and their wives and they made me sit with them and gave me drinks and treated me so well. I will never forget it, it's probably one of my best memories of Saigon 💜
Mafia guys do mafia things. They don't mess up around like idiots. Besides, I know that most of them treat well with their neighbours to make them have good cover during working underground

I've been to Ohio for 10 years, haven't come back yet, because I don't have any relatives in Vietnam. Previously, I lived in Bien Hoa city, a city next to Saigon city.
You know how to choose too, the previous girls in Hai Phong all won the Miss Vietnam award. The girls in Hai Phong are beautiful.
Reminding me of home I never seen. Haven’t been to Vietnam since I was 4. Even then I only went to my dads home town of Nha Trang. Great content!

I been to VN before and I feel much safer than usa, specially at night time vn consider safe too, not citizens allow gun and no shooting, the only thing PICK POCKET i heard sometimes but the law is tough for criminal, the citizens caught criminal and everyone jump and hit them until they get tire and then call the cop, criminal go jail they have to work too and work for their food too, not like usa sit there and wait for 3 meals a day full service

Everytime I have been to HCMC, I stay in D4. I love it!!
Hi Phuc, I was born in Q4 here. Q4 is where the most popular "Dai Ca" name Nam Cam was until 1995. He was sentenced dead penalty in 2004 and many members of his crime syndicate are still in prison. This is probably the main reason why the Q4 is called the MAFIA district.

Nổi tiếng rồi.cộng thêm nhiều băng đảng đôi khi chẳng quen biết gì cũng tự xưng là đàn em anh 5 làm đủ mọi chuyện nên nó mới vậy đó.

actually, up to 2000 it is the main port district of the city. Then many mafia grow there to control the blackmarket of smuggling stuffs like electronic, medicine and drugs. It also home of poor refugee of vietnam war. Today the main port closed and many gangster move away; it's kind of safe

I lived in D12 for 5 years & lots of young guys covered in tattoos sitting in coffee shops all day, neve had a problem living there, now live in Tan Phu next door district. Great Video Phuc Map, really enjoyed that one & your Vietnamese is fantastic. Lived in Vietnam 14 years now & lucky if I know 5 words!! not boasting about it just that I am thicko

During the war, many displaced people from the surrounding countryside lived in district 4 under extremely poor conditions. At one point in time, the general life expectancy in the area was 40 years. Even though the situation in district 4 is changing, its bad reputation persists. I know plenty of Saigonese who have never set foot in district 4. Cheers, OX

Spoiler alert: As a district-fourter, I think the place is pretty gentrified now, due to the bridges that connect it to other places and bring in gentrified people and gentrified cultures, similar to what happened in several suburbs in NYC or Chicago. In the past, D4 was technically an isolated island; when you see it on the map, it's totally surrounded by rivers and canals; so the gangs could just swim over and hide, the police wouldn't even bother crossing the rivers to chase them down because of too much hassle.
Unfortunately thesedays the gangs and the crimes have moved to D8 and Bình Tân district, an underdeveloped area in the west of the city. You can go there and make a video during the day like Chris Lewis once did, but be very careful with your belongings, and I absolutely don't advocate you going at night.

Just to share how crime was rampant in Haiphong years ago. My friend worked in a shipyard in Haiphong, one night he spotted 6 guys swimming synchronously from the shipyard across the river to the other side. Next day, the shipyard reported they lost a steel sheet used for ship building 😂.
