    Weathering breaks the rocks rocks down. Erosion is the transportation of rocks by wind,rivers and glaciers. Its a common misconception.

    Nice video. But the fact is that thermal convection makes up only a marginal share in whole mantle convection. Main role in this process plays elements differentiation. Heavier elements like iron sink down to the earth's core and lighter elements like silicon float up. This process started at the Earth's formation and it produced the Earth's structure as we know it. And it will continue for about 2 billion years in the future and after that all plate tectonics will stop.
