#TheMinimalists #Hoarding #LettingGo
Do you think hoarding is childish?
Hoarding for me could be childish (child of Depression era parents). Hoarding for a lot of folks is a mental disorder, and calling it childish is...well, not exactly helpful.
Absolutely not, this is the worst thumbnail ever. Shame on you guys for shaming people.
I think it could be a sign of emotional trauma from childhood that needs to be resolved. Often there is something underlying that behavior, a deep insecurity of some kind.
This one was triggering for me. Can’t even listen to the episode, it just feels like judgement and lack of understanding.
In a sense it is... Every mental disorder, no matter which one, has a component in it of the person not being or acting fully (emotionally) mature... So in that context, there's some truth to it... But still guys, that's putting it really blunt..... 😅
I'm not a hoarder, but I do have a history of shopaholic tendencies and just had way more stuff than I needed or even wanted... Since watching your potcasts for about a year now I'm totally into minimalism and decluttering, even doing a 2024 no buy year... Thanks guys, really life-changing..... 😊❤
I can relate. Shopaholic here! paired with being a good organizer plus fear of letting go all due to safety and scarcity mentality.
Hoarding by children can be a sign of the need to control something in their lives. The father has said that THEY try to keep everything tidy. Ryan’s suggestion of limiting the space to something acceptable to each party, but obviously not too restrictive to the child, then the child has the choice of what they can keep within that space or spaces. Being too strict may exacerbate the issues. Learn what is at the psychological root, well before trying to discard the physical object.
I disagree. Hoarding can be a mental health issue that is triggered by personal tragedies and events.
I have 3 kids, they are all still very young but my first one, 8 now, is definetly more attached to things that her younger brother who is 6 and would easily give away almost all of his toys, if asked…of course with few exceptions…I really struggle to understand the situation properly…
Yes, but if you watch some episodes of Hoarders, there behavior is very childish. They seem developmentally delayed.
My adult son and I talked about this subject. He sees this as the young child possessing things as she learns about herself. And at three, she doesn't have the perception or understanding of NOT possessing something. A twist to us adults thinking about it as hoarding. The stuff the child has is simply hers: as in her thoughts, her play, her very life. We as parents of course can help our kids learn balance as they grow. I appreciate the comments and suggestions on the show. I'd like to leave us all with a challenge. Get down on the floor and play with your children/grandchildren joining in their lives, yes, and with their 'stuff'. 😀
TK dropping all the knowledge. I love how he thinks!!!
I love TK and his words too!
TK is the man!
Absolutely! And self-centered and stubborn. I have a close family member who likes to blame everyone else for her shopping addiction and hoarding, and she makes excuses for her insane immaturity all the time. She has caused so much heartache and doesn’t appreciate the help and love of her family and friends. So I don’t want to hear the “trauma” excuses.
learning to let go is a skilll
Ryan, thank you for saying that about how you will treat the young me. I believe I was treating my adult self the way my mom treated my young me...which was abusive. While I know better about being good to myself, what you said landed in such a good way.
I love Ryan I am so glad he's on the show in person today
Imagine being 3 years old and being bargered into decluttering your toys for the sake of minimalism.
My Goodness.
Yes, hoarding can be childish. Yet when life situations are tough, hoarding is altogether more difficult than classifying it childish.
A good example is now that the cost of everything keeps jumping sometimes it's better to get multiples for later. That's just stock piling .
Another example is If you live in an area where the water and power goes out a lot you may have a tendency to always have cases of water on hand .
just because a child wants to keep stuff doesn't MAKE them a hoarder later on! Geez!!
I love what TK says in regards to the callers question. I am loving having you 3 together again. My heart sings. I'm kinda hoping Ryan and his wife are moving back so we can have the trio again haha. It's OK though life goes on and we have different twists and turns. @JFM your joke at the start made me burst out laughing so thank you for that. I hope you guys all have a great weekend! Your insights and experiences bring a lot to us listeners :)
Most people would say that “seek first to understand” quote came from Steven R Covey’s 7 Habits.
Some would say he got it from The 'Belle prière à faire pendant la messe' (A Beautiful Prayer to Say During the Mass), from 1912.
Valuable points made here 💞 how a message is delivered can make or break relationships.
Great episode guys
I suggest ppl check out schema therapy... it talks about adults often being in child mode. and then how to be an adult in adult mode. its fasinating! i want to hug my young self all the time!
Power through boundaries ❤
TK you are brilliant
I CAN’T believe that a grown man called in and said his THREE year old hoards. Get help for your brain Steven! She is a baby. She has only been on the planet 3 years. Good grief!!
Amen TK!
I hope the caller from Annapolis really listens to TK and takes it to heart.
❤👍
Not sure who's angrier him or the car 😆
Interesting call toddler holding on to her stuff bless her and good parents observed this my daughter put all sorts in her dolly pram everything she loved except a doll or teddy! Stones sticks 😂 still got wood and pebbles they were her silky stones! She’s 29!
Heh. You made me think of Jesus. What was his agenda in asking people to leave everything and follow him?
Ya well i think kids hoarding can be temporary but some kids do that, some parets set an example and they follow , but best to ask a child experts
Usually in would be a result of need of control and safety - could be thing they experience at home or in pee school that has to do with lack of safety.
I think only owning one pair of pants is childish
Ok
Prepping isn't childish, quite the opposite actually.
Yes, it is.
Consider having her evaluated for ASD.
This so called parent is going to create new hoarder in a TODDLER. --- to the TODDLER, I'm sorry he had no right to take your stuff.
I'm going to unsub beause of this video title. Not only is hoarding a mental issue it's also not the point to be shaming people right? Is that who you guys are?
Shaming works. Many food addicts have been interviewed where being shamed & ashamed was their cure and it saved their lives. Many hoarders died buried in their junk. Seems to me, you want people with this mental illness to be killed with kindness.
There's a whole thing in psychology about your inner child and healing. Which includes unhealed people can be childish behavior because of a bad childhood or because they reinvent back to acting childish because it was a time of not having responsibilities. Hoarding fits in perfectly into that behavior so, yes, the title fits. There's nothing morally wrong with childish behavior or calling something childish (afterall what is bad about kids?) but it could be a sign of inner hurt and mental illness.
I think your not getting the balance ♥️🇬🇧 keep open minded not everyone agrees with you
@RoxyBerlin I would say calling people 'childish' is in itself a 'childish' trait. Why even refer to acting like a child like it is something bad?
@@hollichristensen6419 You know as well as I do most people use 'childish' as though it's a bad thing and this title is meant to cater to that perception.
