I've got a 1973 65hp Johnson. It was totally remanufactured in 2014. It runs absolutely BRAND NEW !! I love this little Motor. It's in great shape for it's age, But after watching your video, I think I'm gonna give it a Face Lift !! All it needs is New Paint work. Everything under the Cowling looks new. At $1000 in making it like new again, I can't buy a good 65hp for that !! I'll post some before and after pictures, Might even video the work !! Well worth the time !! Thanks and great job !!
I have a Johnson 55hp , I rebuilt it and refinished it in Ferrari Red, it complements the 19ft boat refinished in metalflake Red, runs fast and perfect.
Ive got a motor just like this. same year too. I was amazed at the new parts I was able to buy to restore it !! Great motors built tough!! I wish my motor was as nice as yours!! Beautiful!
Very nice work looks like you did not miss a trick. I bought this exact same motor as NOS. The motor was new in the crate but was 5 years old stock that was auctioned off from a dealer that had gone bankrupt. i got a great deal for $1000.00 with controls. the motor turned out to be a lemon, in the first 100 hours a connecting rod bearings started to fail and punched a hole threw the crank case. i had the alum case welded installed new crank bearings and con rods rings and a quick hone. Well it lasted just over 145 hours and exactly the same thing went down again. i did one more rebuild and sold it for $1500.00 with just over 260 hours on the clock/motor. i told the guy that bought it the problems and repairs i had done with all bill's and service records .i never heard back from the guy and i would see the motor on a lund alum boat running around on the lake.i dont think he put many hours on thet motor every season so i think he got around 4 or 5 years before he had any problems show up. for me it was not a good motor as i could run up 100 hours in on season of good fishing
wow that is a beautiful motor! I would love to make my 1975 40 look and run like that. its the 40el75c. I just rebuilt the carb, rebuilt the water pump, and have been working on cleaning the outside of the lower unit. Thanks for some inspiration to take it a bit further.
I have the same motor that starts and runs nicely except for one issue: the carb adjustment screw only one located on the front of carb right above the intake hole (it’s a tiny flat screw). When this screw is turned out full turns from tight position, she starts first crank in cold mornings (her sweet spot). However, it gets lose/sometimes tighten after speeding perhaps from vibration. Question is: Is there supposed to be a retainer? Because I have looked online and all looks to be the same as mine just a screw. So confused.
i just bought a 6hp 1960s johnson outboard ,i am gonna restore it ,,i got it from a kid who spent money on it last year head gasket and water pump ..fired once then stopped ,no go ,,i gave him 200 bucks for it ,,its in realy good shape for the year ,,get it running ,coils maybe ,,he left gas in it ,so hopefully .just a gummed up carb ..,,i will be coming on here for advice ,,lol i havnt got a clue what i am doing ,,but hey ,i am 70 live in a rooming house ,,and its a long winter ....
i got 110 psi on my compression test on both cylinders, which to me seems good enough. Last time I ran this engine was 4 years ago and it overheated without buzzer. It got hot. Currently no spark. The Chevrolet white looks great. Please help.
I just watched a video about Johnson outboards from a guy that told me I should turn my 1966 Johnson Metoer2 into a mailbox. Was he right? Did it cost more than a new one?
I am working on a 1983 Johnson 115.I put it in gear and the prop will not move whether it is in forward or reverse. I went to check the lower unit oil and it is bone dry which makes me think maybe rust on the shaft is locking it up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have this motor. Why do they call it a powershift? Mine idols perfectly and goes about 1.5-1.8 mph at idol without missing a beat for hours. It will only go about 20mph at top speed with my 16.5’ sylvan deep v boat. It doesn’t miss and sputter and compression is good, not poor gas issue, correct prop, any ideas?
I have the same engine but mine is a 74 is your top carburetor feed down to lower carburetor from the fuel pump and I have to tune the jet needles. Could you give me any pointers
Such a nice build mate. I am doing a 1980 60HP SeaHorse right now. I did notice a couple of things that seemed out of place, but i could be wrong? The exhaust manifold wires..the 2 purple ones..this is not factory?... What sensor do you have coming out of there? The fuel pump has been relocated? I was looking at the ignition in general..that's all later model? Love the sound of your motor....Nice job anyway mate...Full credit to your patience and detail

you did a fantastic job on that engine it's beautiful and looks to run great I have the same engine just the Evinrude version I have a few questions that I think you might be able to help me out with it would be greatly appreciated
Yes there is a temp sensor in the upper left corner of the head water cover. If the engine gets too hot, the sensor expands and touches the crankcase which sets off the overheat horn in the forward control
If I might ask. Where did you find parts? I have a 73 50hp as well and have looked for kits and found none that would work. And run pretty much a dead end right away looking for pistons and rings. Of course I do realize this was 6 years ago too.
just bought the same engine. question where does the water come out of ive always had newer engines and there was always a water stream to let u know the pump is working?
On the rebuild I have a 78 30hp I'm rebuilding where did you find the water inlet grommets . I have searched but the seal is obsolete no after market kits available. What's bad is it's the only peace I have not been able to find.
A 100 psi seems a little low Nick, the engine in the video was honed and re-ringed and has over 140 psi of compression; this could be the cause of the stalling once a load is put on the engine. The reed valves could also be an issue, may require a good cleaning- but be careful. As for the carbs - if they haven't been completely rebuilt, do that and be sure the linkages are precisely adjusted. Hope that helps.
Could you help me with the wire color i need to hook up the same motor to a new ignition switch and cant find anything online i have red, yellow/gray, yellow, purple/yellow, purple/ white, purple,
I have a 72 50hp Johnson The water does not come out of those two slots at the top and the motor is very hot when I put it in water to start in my driveway does that mean I need a water pump
Great video, I am new to boating and I wonder what part is on the front of the motor that has the 2 rubber caps covering holes. I have a 73 Johnson 65 hp 3 cylinder. Mine has 3 holes , with 2 rubber caps, looks like I am missing one. What is this
these plugs simply cover the holes in the plenum. The holes will give one direct access to the needles in the carbs for quick adjustment. I hope that helps.
@@jeffsextratv no adjustable low speed needle valves on that motor. those plugs are before they made the plastic air silencers with the hole in the side to inject tuner and/or fogging oil, and way before electric primer with the schraeder valve. so those plugs are for injecting to each carb.
RI Outboards...Yes those low speed needles can be adjusted but you have to make sure that the small plastic seats aren't brittle and broke as the needles seat into them.... There's also a red plastic piece that goes around the needles to keep the needles from moving when the engine runs and vibrates...Very important to check those white plastic needle seats as if they're damaged you can't get the engine to idle and run smoothly at low rpms...

Actually it looks like a 1973 , 72 was hydroelectric lower and had a yellow plug on wiring harness plus the cover would say 50th anniversary in front, and side plates would be white with black letters not black with white letters. So it looks like your a year off, 1973

+George Wheeler The 1973 was slightly different than even the '72 and '74. Some parts can be difficult to find, the safety switch in the remote control is very hard to find, some what impossible. As long as the engine neutral safety switch (still available) is good and cables are adjusted properly you should be okay. Good luck with rebuild.
