Love your hard work. Good job guys. You talk about acclimating your vegetables to your farm. I am a plant geneticist, you’re not changing the genetics of the plants you’re only selecting the varieties that are most adapted to your farm. This is exactly the correct procedure to select the varieties that make highest yield. most disease resistant and grow best on your farm. Keep the videos coming. 😁

I'm just an heirloom veg gardener and found exactly what these fine folks found out. I choose for the biggest or most flavorful or even the ones that grow or tolerate the weather best and the plants seem to really get bigger and better for me.
My grandpa called it landracing but I've not really heard anyone else calling it that.

@@Emeraldwitch30 I've studied plant genetics also, and am glad gardeners do landrace projects. It can save crops that may not be commercially grown for profit, but are great for homestead growing (flavor & dependability).

Interesting experiment...I love potatoes and I really wanted to buy some fingerling potatoes but they were so expensive and I am a very poor gardener (poor in the sense of I can't grow things well) so I put in a russet potato and Yukon gold which are my favorites. I grow in containers. I don't get a big crop but I do get a few meals worth and at 81, I am OK with that.
I hope you get a huge crop for all your efforts. Have a Blessed day.

JudithB Bugs are already bad up here, but I will check my tators for cutworms. I already found a web worm nest on one peach tree and the ticks are awful. I put a wooden toothpick alongside my tomato, squash, and peppers stems when I plant them out. Cutworms need to wrap around the stem to cut but they cant chew the hard toothpick. I thought crows were taking my pea sprouts but I wonder if its cutworms? Toothpicks are cheap!!! LOL

I plant potatoes every month here in Florida so I can harvest monthly, and I do save my own potatoes for seed and have for years by keeping them in a wood grate layered in dirt in my laundry room. They seem to acclimate with no problems. The blue potatoes almost have a nutty flavor to me, love them.

Try some neem oil at the base of every plant! Cut worms hate it! It works for us. I will spray neem on the root zone and wait 5 minutes and they will all surface and try to run. At that point I spray with BT, with a light dusting of diatomaceous earth. The neem oil would probably be fine, I do the other steps out of pure fury....lol. hope that helps! Grow on!

My potatoes are blooming so I am getting excited about harvest time. Danny, my squash and zucchini plants are making little fruits but they are rotting or something. I think they are not being pollinated. I haven’t seen hardly any bees. I could not grow squash last year either. I feel like my soil is good. Have you had this problem before?

    • @DeepSouthHomestead

Some of the sticky rodent pads might glue them to it, otherwise chickens , they will eat them.

Will you allow your chickens in the garden to defend against the insects? I've seen other RUclips people use their chickens but I'm not a farmer so I don't know if it is solid advice or not.
Also, can someone point me to a DSH video concerning over planting to combat bugs/pests?

    • @DeepSouthHomestead

The chickens would eat the whole garden if they got in it. Not good advice.

Wow, the two cucumber plants I have on my balcony are only about 2 inches high! Guess I should have put mine out a lot earlier! I’m worried though, because it’s supposed to get down in the 30s tonight and I have all my plants on the balcony AND the ones in the ground at my in-laws’ house and my aunt’s house. I hope they don’t get damaged. That’s the thing about Georgia weather. We’ll have days and days of sunny spring weather and then BAM! It will drop into the 30s out of nowhere.
