Training my oldest son on the Cowen 60 frame extractor. It’s a simple machine to work but all the steps need to be swift so that the extractor spends more time spinning than loading.
It typically takes 8 min for the conveyor to load, which is just enough time to spin the honey out of the comb. A 1 minute load/unload makes for more drier combs when pulled from the extractor,
My son caught on quick,
The more I watch your operation, the more I love my one little hive. 🐝👏🏼
I had a couple of questions but you answered them in your comment responses. It was funny watching the old man keeping the truck stacker busy. He doesn't know all your tricks yet to keep up. Thanks
That old man was me lol
Nice to watch you teaching the kids how to do everything. Apprenticeships are a very undervalued form of education. Keep it up!
Your setup is amazing. You have good crew, Kerrie is a brilliant all rounder you would be stuck without her Ian
She’s great! However no business is ever dependent on one person..!
I love the elbow to stop drip's simple and ingenious.
Love watching your operation! You have it down. Great watching no Son follow in your footsteps. Peace
Hello, I'm Brazilian from Minas Gerais, I watch your entire video, I shouldn't even be considered a beekeeper because I only have 40 swarms, I learn a lot from You, who knows, maybe I'll help you one day, work for you, I love messing with bees. A big hug, congratulations on your work. I hope the translation came out right.
I loved learning how to use the extractor with your son as my teacher, and you as the “voice of experience” in the background. It’s fun to learn how machines operate. I knew the general motions from watching your videos, but now I understand the levers, crank, brake, etc...I’m ready to head for Canada and become part of your crew! 😊 🐝🐝🐝
Get in the back of the line....
This is starting to look like a better honey year than last year. Maybe that new EZ-Lift will be in the cards after all.
Fascinating operation. I love watching it
Gotta love it when a plan comes together !
Hi. I just want to say, another great and awesome video. You have huge operation going and to take the time to video it...thank you thank you. I also want to say best wishes to the young guy you were training...he looked like he was catching on quick. I so much enjoy your videos and your channel...you have 1 of the best in bee keeping and again I thank you and thumbs up. Take care.
Sweet set up you got it dialed in. 🍯🍯
Cha-Ching....and the wheels keep turning....tell that guy on the truck they make a tool for that problem....it’s called a belt....love you guys....and gals....
Did pull on 2 yards yesterday and best hive gave two boxes and I will get a 3rd before building for wintering nest building . I don’t get many hives that yield about 150 pounds . Best honey pull off that yard ever but bee foraging crop on blooms has paid off on cpr land and looking to do the same with waisted in used land at other yard . This years experiment shows plant crop for bees and rewards are in the honey.
Wonderful Job! Congratulations!
That's cheating! We had an automatic hot knife extractor and two 96 frame radials on my Dad's operation, but everything in between was moving frames by hand. That's a really sweet setup! Your crew is "lucky", ha ha! I can sympathize with your son. He's lucky to be getting the education you are giving him. Very few in this world will get the experiences you are giving him.
I do not miss the honey house from my brief time doing it......so rote......but your operation is a little better oriented (which leads to less physical) and you also carry a lot more help. Good honey crop.
Honey house is a good change up from the yard, and the yard is a good change up from the honey house lol
such an efficient crew.
Great video. Michael is getting the hang of it. A couple more hours and he'll be running like a well oiled machine. How come Carrie gets to work the place of two men? She is a HARD WORKER!! You have Great assets! Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you and your family.
Looks good. Your large scale operation makes me feel so small.
I may be copying that window idea. The bees in my honey house are always a problem.
I put up bug zappers overnight after pulling honey. Hate to kill the stragglers but there's usually not too many, just enough to be a nuisance. I'm putting up a new honey house, it's going to have windows lol
Bug zappers certainly helps with wasps
Brad, I’ve come to the conclusion that a simple window, that I sweep regularly is the easiest and most effective method of clearing bees. I’ve tried elaborate escapes, tunnels, lures, hives etc... nothing works like a backwards window and a brush lol
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog I may just order up a window next week! Thanks!
Boa noite, achei muito bom os seus vídeos apesar de não falar seu idioma dá pra entender o seu trabalho, que com certeza é muito puxado nesta época do ano
6:52 Saw an overhead rail for boxes in a video a while back that gravity feed from the deboxer past the extractor. Can't find the clip now. Would save a lot of steps and eliminate the need for a walking path in that area.
Looking at that for sure
I think I saw that in a video of mobile extracting set up that was all in an enclosed trailer. I'll try to find it.
At about 0:50

a Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog here's the one I was thinking of. Similar to your 60 frame decapper/extractor line ruclips.net/video/wpUAAPaFIy8/видео.html. Appears a standard item from Cowen Mfg for ~$4,500. Stainless is expensive. There's also this video that shows a floor level gravity feed roller. ruclips.net/video/waNbOHMSlB4/видео.html
Good luck
absolute amazing process would love to rich this scale of harvesting
Goodday Ian, could you show the processes in cleaning the extracting equipment after harvest and how you salvage all that honey in the pipe system used, sumps, pipes, I could imagine hundreds of dollars in honey sitting in the system.
I gest I will be growing canola for my bees next year 😃🐝🐝🐝
He took to it like a duck to water lol Its been 30 here the last week after 2 weeks of rain
Have you ever thought of running an afternoon shift to try and keep up with the demand for empty boxes? I hear how you always discuss the need for enough empty boxes to capture the flow on the tight schedule.
I think he said getting another crew trained to be able to run the equipment, and finding that many more people, is not a simple thing out there
Honey house runs 8-5
24 hr operation lol
So many dynamics are involved with managing a business, workload, getting the job done, keeping ahead of the work, the cost of help, the cost of getting behind, the cost of equipment and facility. I think we are nicely balanced. Busy enough to be busy and not behind
@@carriemartindale-wetherup5243 the REAL reason Ian only runs one shift in the Honey House...
He only has one Carrie to keep it running smoothly!
I don't want to think about where he would be without you Carrie lol
good morning everyone beekeeper
I wonder if we can get Phil Swift to pitch your honey farm weight loss program

Day one I would forget a step and my fingers would be extracted.
About how many lbs of honey comes out of the combs on each cycle?
Y’all are rolling
I am down with the mask in the honey room regardless of any other consideration: I have slight allergy in the warmer weather. Drip, drip, drip...
Ian could you do a video on how you clean the honey house dealing with the stickiness of honey and waxy beeswax?
👍
You may have already thought of this. I was just thinking back to the fire you had the other day, and the application of the hydraulic power pack. I know with high torque DC winch motors over-frequent starting and stopping of the motor can cause increased heat issues in a hurry. I wonder if the nature of how the power pack is being used (short bursts) overheated the motor to the point that the brush springs relaxed, failed to make sufficient contact, and arced, creating more heat and eventually a fire. I’m not sure what the end solution is, but if a brushless motor is an option it might be worth the investment.
What are the sizes of your frames Sir?
Great to see the family involved!
How long does your extractor spin?
8 min cycle , or until the conveyor is full
I'm not first. But I'm here
Hello
i would like to know how many years it took you to start your business
because I find the potential of work that you have great
how many beehives did you start with for the first year?
Thank you for your reply
I live in France and I want to become a professional beekeeper and end my life with bees
a big thank-you

Everybody has to go to the bathroom at the same time.
Muito 🍯🐝💯🇧🇷👍
So you got ez loader back up and running again? Looks like you almost tipped a load off one hive. Lol. Do you have air conditioning in honey house?
No air conditioning but thinking of it
Approxhow many 45 gal drums do you fill in first harvest
Fingers crossed
Why not install bee escapes at the top of the windows to let the bees out?
Wasps know how to use cones both ways
How much weight on a full truck?
Wow.. just awesome to watch and see. Those pallets around 4000 lbs of honey? is that right?
Let’s say a box averages 60-65 lbs, 36 boxes to a pallet. 35-40 lbs per box ave is pretty good.
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog ok good.. I low-balled boxes at 60 ea and counted 36... so I was close there.. could be close to 5k pounds on the forklift. Man that is a LOT of honey to a small guy like me! lol
Where do you pur the empty boxes and frames after the extraction, since they are not taken to hives at once ?
Stacked in the hot room for storage until we take them out again or put them into trailers for storage
Preciso de um jaleco deste
Tuyệt vời quá.
Do you have the time in summer to use the boat? Smile
At 10:35 there are some Boxes taped together with red tape. Why did you do that?
Probably one of them is damaged leaving a spot the bees or pests can get through, which would cause problems when extracting.
Crack in the box
Gotta plug holes otherwise bees will take their honey back
At 18:43 what is the tapping on the screens for?
To knock the bees off
Can’t help myself, it’s an addiction
03:49😂lol
What about bee escapes on the windows?
Wasps know how to use cones both ways
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Good to know! Yikes.
🌹🤚
🇹🇷🇹🇷👍
how many frames in a honey super?
Ten or nine i guess In suppers nine because they give more space for honey but in the first box where is the queen and the brood are ten
If I remember correctly, he uses 9 frames. This is so that the comb is a bit thicker and the decapping machine can be more efficient.
Exactly
Hello Turkey
The wife has been worried about you saying for weeks "he is losing too much weight" please take time and eat so she can quit worrying about you!!
Ha, ! That’s exactly it, I forget to eat
