Hi there, I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying some nice weather wherever you are. I'm heading back out to the greenhouse today to pot up the rest of the tomatoes. I can't tell you how good being outside with my hands in the dirt is doing for my soul. Lots of love, Cheslea
The newspaper pot is new to me. So glad I watched this. I used to add flyers to compost, but newspaper is getting more and more rare. Tip for labelling. Use numbers on your sticks and write down what it is in a book. Even if sharpie fades, you can usually make out what the number is.
I feel ya on the labeling issue, the lie I tell myself every year...”I’ll remember what that is.”. All your starts look SO good!! Interesting to see the amount of snow you still have compared to where I am (also Zone 3 in AB). I totally love using paper pots, they will work very well if/when I get my soil blocker.
We seem to be the last to have the snow leave around here. We're up in the mountains and on base of the east facing slope which means we don't get the warmer afternoon sun this time of year.
I learned about the paper pots also from Serena and potted up all of my 88 tomatoes in the last couple days! I figured out also to cut the paper in half lengthwise and made small pots for other things by wrapping it around a skinny aluminum can! Fun! And it feels good to use these! Ps, I laughed when I first heard Serena mention you and your channel and that you live way north of her in Kelowna! So I looked up your location! I’m in GP, AB! That’s really North in comparison! Lol and I’m really surprised that we are both in the same zone! I would have quested you were one zone warmer but I guess because we both can experience the extreme minus degrees in our winters which determines what will still thrive after those extreme cold snaps. Happy gardening! I’m going out to the heated garage to go pot up some more seedlings in my paper pots!
I bought a small wooden paper pot maker tool from Lee Valley in early 2000 maybe 2004 - then upsized as you are doing when needed not pot up using a tin can
Great job on the greenhouse guys! It looks awesome. You must be thrilled to be in there with all your seedlings for this season. Your plants look great. I’m almost jealous, my tomatoes just got started last weekend. Way to go everything looks great!
@@LittleMountainRanch No problem you guys deserve it. Well done. I’m curious? When did you start your seedlings? Did you start them inside under lights and move everything outside once the greenhouse was finished. How long were the seedlings inside before you moved out to the greenhouse. How warm do you keep the greenhouse at night. Thanks for sharing. Happy gardening!
Our snow in NNY State is mostly gone, but it did snow the other day. My tomatoes were planted in milk jugs 6 weeks ago in the snow. Not warm enough for germination yet, but most of our cold crops, and herbs have started to peek out.
I so enjoyed your video. Haven't been by in a while so I got to see the last 3. Made a perfect spring trio. I'm building fences this year so will only have tomatoes in a pot on the porch. Next year I will use the paper pot idea and look for your potting soil recipe. Thanks for the great videos! Happy spring!
Live watching your videos! And great idea on the newspaper pots. If I recall correctly, I think you grow more on the organic side so I’m wondering if there is any concern about the ink in the newspaper touching the soil? Thanks for the advice:)
You are doing so well with your seedlings! I wish I had a green thumb like that. I made my own seedling soil and I think it lacks something. I’m planning to pot them up in the next few days, I hope that helps. One tip for the label issue is to staple the plant marker to the pot. It especially helps with little ones about.
@@LittleMountainRanch I just had to come back and let you know that I searched and found the soil mix recipe on their website. I got all the elements and potted my seedlings up. They are doing amazing now! One even got a blossom on it today! Thank you so much, it’s made a huge difference. I’m going to use this from now on, no more seedling mix for me!
Paper pot, the most amazing thing I have seen in a while. I would be willing to make these smaller for seeding. Anything I can do to not buy plastic pots. Not that I don't have a bunch of plastic pots but don't really want to buy more. Learned a bit more about tomatoes too. Question about your root cellar. You have 2 doors to get into the root cellar but I forgot how far apart you said you had them. Planning out my new in-ground greenhouse with a root cellar off the back and couldn't remember some of the specifics. Thanks. :)
@@LittleMountainRanch Interesting, I hadn't heard of a walipini before. I was trying to think of the word geothermal but couldn't. A walipini looks like a bit easier build and you don't have to buy all the 6 inch pipe to bury under 4 feet of soil. Just as much digging but no backfilling. Thank you. :)
Hey Chelsea....i can't remember how big you said this "greenhouse" is. I am sure you mentioned it in a earlier greenhouse. It looks huge with the wide angle lens but i know its not. I love this idea. Great video. Glad your snow is going....ours is too but very very slowly. How did your bees winter over.
Hi I am in newfoundland we have snow as well .Are you seeding comos .? I just bought them but not sure when to seed them ,Just starting out in the seed world .love your videos I am learning every time I watch you .
Allah'u'abha. Good afternoon Chelsea, what a great idea. Just wandering how do you water them and how often? Also do you plant out the tomatoes pot and all? Thanks you.
Allah'u'abha! Yes, the pot and all can go into the ground. I water them in the morning when they start to dry out a little with a hose and nozzle sprayer.
Thanks for a great video. I was wondering how you water these so that the paper pots don’t fall apart? I usually bottom water in plastic pots but not sure if that’s what I should do for paper pots?
I water with a hose with a spray nozzle and haven't had a problem. The biggest issue with the paper pots is that they aren't easy to move around unless they are on a tray. I've never tried bottom watering them, but I think it would be fine.
Sorry one more question, I have seedlings in an area that goes down to 60 degrees f. Do you think that will stump or slow down the growth of seedlings? Thank you as always!

You know when you are Canadian, when you can have a t-shirt on and still have snow on the ground heh

That's a great idea! I wonder if I could keep track of the paper? lol
I love your videos because we live in very similar climates, and I don’t feel as bad still having snow lol

Serina is in Kelowna in zone five and we're 5 hours north of her in zone 3b. It's crazy how different climates can be relatively close geographically.

I can be number one to say hi!
Still snow here too. I'll be out walking in a couple days

I was in Las Vegas for the last 3 months .. got down to about 33 a few times BURRRR HA! Great Sun & weather 45 - 60 degree days .

That's something I've never tried. Are your summer's warm enough to ripen tomatoes outside? Sadly I can't here.
Have a wonderful Easter 🐣

What a great idea. Love it - gonna make some paper pots yet today. Thanks
You are so welcome!

Not with the newsprint I use which is vegetable based. I do try to be organic but I’m not a purest.
i watched just for your paper pots. i betcha a short chunk of pvc pipe would work perfect and if you dop it. it wont break
Love your utube channel. So informative. And the newspaper pots are a fantastic idea

9x15 It's the perfect size for a smaller greenhouse or grow out space.
@@LittleMountainRanch thanks.....i think we are going about the same....10x15 or 16. Once we get the wood milled we will see what we build. Thanks.
Looks great! I'm curious about watering paper pots. Do you water from the bottom?
No, I water with a spray nozzle. You could bottom water no problem though.❤️
What!? T-shirt weather already at your place and we, with our temperate climate still are in 'false spring' and prepping for 'second winter'. ^_^
We had 2 inches of snow fall the other day, but I think spring is finally really here!
Regarding the newspaper pots, do you plant the paper pot and all at planting time, or do you carefully remove the plant from the paper? Thank you!

You can start your cosmos right now. They grow pretty fast so you're not too late.
Allah'u'abha.

Allah'u'abha! Yes, the pot and all can go into the ground. I water them in the morning when they start to dry out a little with a hose and nozzle sprayer.

I'm assuming you watered the tomatoes well after transplanting? That soiled looked like it was bonedry... :-)
Whoops! I edited that part out by accident.
I was going to ask the same question.
Hi🌻 what seed starting mix do you use? Your plants look awesome!
Hey, I mix my own seed starting mix. You can find the recipe on the West Coast Seeds website. Once I pot up I use Sungrow organic potting soil.
@@LittleMountainRanch thanks🌞

My wife said "bye Chelsea! We're best friends..." at the end of the video
That made my day!❤️
Do you do anything special to warm up your well water before watering your plants.
No
Sorry one more question, I have seedlings in an area that goes down to 60 degrees f. Do you think that will stump or slow down the growth of seedlings? Thank you as always!
They’ll be fine at that temp. Under 10 is starting to get chilly for warm crops and will slow them down a bit.
@@LittleMountainRanch ok thanks!
How do the paper pots hold up to being watered? My mom sells plants and I will be sharing this idea with her.
Great! Just don't move them around a lot. A friend of mine sells thousands of plants each spring using these exact pots.
Is your soil in the ground still frosen like here?
Yes, but thawing fast now!
Do you think paper bags will work I have a ton of them
I think so. Try a few and see how it goes.
