Generally into water, and then into the soil below wherever you have it.. You can fill it with water and pour it out multiple times, or else over time the rain will do it for you. It makes the ground slightly more alkaline. Some plants like alkaline soil, but succulents want it more neutral. Same thing happens when you pour a foundation for a house, for the first year you sometimes have issues growing some plants right next to the foundation.
