LIDAR - A New Way to See! (...is someone there?)

- LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a gamemode for Garry's Mod which completely replaces traditional sight. Instead, we're given a tool for painting dots, slowly revealing our environment as we explore. It's a lot of fun to play around with, although it can be a little spooky wandering about alone in the dark...

Lidar is actually what many robots use to detect its enviroment. Quite cool to see what most robots see in a format we can comprehend
thats so interesting
Yes, the most funny thing that they see us like in lidar mod, so thats real-life horror for robots (if they had feelings and etc)
Well they always scan, not like once per two lifetimes of universe
Except it is way faster, constant, and consistent. It's essentially "real time". That, and most of the time the have LIDAR and normal camera sensors.
@Vladimir Novitski No. LiDAR projects infrared dots to detect the shape of the environment. Obviously your eyes do not do that, they just absorb light going into your retinas.
A horror game called "Scanner Sombre" did this exact thing, and it was super cool. It used LIDAR to replace Regular Sight as you explored the depths of this abandoned mine, but you may not enjoy what you find dwelling in the dark depths...
I really hope he plays that, seems like SUCH a cool idea
I remember watching gameplay of it years ago
I absolutely love that game!
I really like that game, it has some cool vibes, and it's the best video game cave I've ever been in
Sadly if I remember correctly Scanner Sombre sold pretty poorly
its nto a horror game
Once you spot the "Redman" the color red (which happens to be used for meat or flesh) is actually removed from the scanner spectrum which turns him into a shadow
So these entities have flesh but when they get touched by these light layers there whole existence gets erased? Idk just a idea of mine... since the shadows left behind remind me of silhouettes after a nuke went off and they get vaporized while leaving a imprint on the wall behind them...

oh god.. this comment left chills down my spine. now im imagining what the map would look like if the gun made textures...
If you press ctrl+c while it's "rebooting", you get to see the map normally.
The maps, when playing with LIDAR, *appear* inverted
Only maps with a navmesh work
If you press tab, there's someone in your server (even in singleplayer)
Players are also red. During the reboot, it says "Unrecognised surface material, saving", "Error saving new material, ignoring". From this point on, what WOULD be the red man, is now showing up as shadows, this includes players, as they use the same "surface material"
Im glad you mentioned the map was inverted, I thought I was going crazy for a second there
@@hyperventalated same. Was wondering why is seemed like the bridge was in the wrong place
I remember from a comment on another video about this that it actually just flips your view or something like that. Mirror-images it? What I know is that map isn’t being changed, but the player’s view is.
@@joshuahilliker2364 it's either the map being inverted, or the view of the player is, either way, the map appears inverted
The rendered image is mirrored and horizontal movement (CUserCmd sidemove and mouse) is essentially flipped. The mode does do some things to the map, but it's only npc and soundscape removal.
if you look at the console that pops up when you see a red figure, it seems less like the static is coming from the thing itself and more like it's coming from the device you're using to scan and see. it seems to be unable to - or it refuses to - render whatever texture is on the model. that's why it shows up so much as silhouettes, because in the fiction there's no texture for the dots to get color from
It tried to catalogue the redman's material but it failed and as such ignored him in future hence the shadow
So,it's a ghost?
Maybe it's referencing "Color Out of Space" or something? Looks really cool and absolutely terrifying though.
So it's an error texture or something?
its called the stalker im pretty sure

I’d like to say the red man is the trigger for the main creepy events on the map to take place, considering he is the first encounter before all the weird stuff happens

Engineer here. Lidar sensors work by essentially shooting out a laser to get a distance measurement. By shining out lots of them (or in practice shining one laser but moving it really rapidly and keeping track of where it's pointed) you can create a distance map of the surrounding environment. This technique is used a lot in robotics to give them information about their surroundings, so in a sense this lets you see the world as a robot would see it! Which is a super cool concept to me from a horror perspective, how robots might see the world and the uncanny alien structures they interpret from the world around them with the absolute bare minimum sensory information we humans gave it to perform its function.
Engineer gaming
Mad respect on you mate, I just learned something new that I never would have learned or even heard about outside of something like this. I tip my hat to you.
nice dragon pfp :3
Idk how much you know about this stuff, but I wanted to add to your explanation. On moving robots, that distance map is created by taking multiple scans, finding similar points within each scan, then stitching all of the scans together at those points. Usually velocity/acceleration data is also used to approximate the movement of the scanner between scans, which helps with the stitching process. What’s even cooler is you can then use that distance map, plus new scans of the environment and motion data, to allow the robot to figure out where it is within the distance map. This is how robots can figure out where they are in their environment and navigate autonomously. The distance map can also be updated using new scans to account for changes in the environment, like moving obstacles. This whole process is called “SLAM navigation” btw. Sorry if I’m getting into the weeds here, but I spent a year working with LiDAR and navigation algorithms to develop an autonomous vehicle, and I find this stuff super interesting.
Also, most of the newer iPhones have a solid-state LiDAR array on both the front and back. If you have an iPhone with FaceID or the big camera array with the small grey circle in the corner, you can do this stuff with your phone
@@guyguy463 That's so cool!!! I've spent the last year working on a research project where we developed and tested a new process to create, somewhat, synthetic data (synthetic point clouds + labels) to improve the quality of data used to train object detection models, for autonomous driving. This is a very interesting field of study, but god it is hard... data segmentation for point clouds (captured by LiDARs) is a HUUUUGE pain in the ass. At least I think that BOSCH is working on a new type of LiDAR that can help solve this, but until then, many people will have nightmares that look just like this game ahaha.
I don't know why, but the realization when he said "You're still there" when the shadow didn't go away legitimately terrified me
Genuine fear in his voice
Same!
Redman and shadow is the same thing. First time when you scan it, it's glowing red because it's an unknown material for scanner. You can see in console readout that it finds new material (flesh, supposedly), but fails to save it and ignores, hence afterwards you can only see its outlines on a scanned area. And the glitchy sound is made by the lidar scanner when it encounters the ignored material.
that honestly makes it scarier in a way

I thought it was just vaporizing the man
what if redguy was actually just. a regular ass guy wandering the area. and you're a robot with an error that makes it so you can't recognize flesh
Your commentary of this mode makes LIDAR seem less like a conventional laser scanning system and more like a forbidden inter-dimensional device capable of visualizing things mankind wasn't supposed to see. And granted, the gamemode itself is certainly lending to that idea.

Kinda like the hidden mingebag lobbies for Contruct 13 beta? Construct 13 beta has an additional addon that lets you load into the mingebag servers and interact with players in real time while you’re connected. You can see them and they can see you, but you’re both mingebags. Of course, being Construct 13 beta, all of this is hidden from the player, and in fact the mingebags being players and not prerecorded is never disclosed, and given that the layout of the map at least somewhat constant (it’s Contruct 13 beta, which itself is a part of a sandbox game), you would assume that they’re not players.
Hey, I remember the game that inspired this mod! (At least, I believe it did based on the colours and sounds) It's a short exploration game deep inside a cave where you have to map out your environment using a device just like this and slowly piecing together a story. LiDAR is such a weird concept to me because it's basically just that one weird misconception about normal vision you had when you were six where the light shoots out of your eyes and bounces off things and comes back.
Except it's lasers.
thinking about light retracting off of things to make a image makes me feel blind yet also not blind for some reason...
I remember reading that ancient Greeks thought that our eyes have thousands of invisible tentacles that grab everything around and that is the way we see, not sure if that's true but it's an interesting concept.
@@bruh7894 That sounds like its the origin of the phrase eye fondling
It's also how ray tracing works
@@DogsRNice Pretty sure raytracing works more like normal light, where there's a light source or sources that emit rays that bounce around and many of which land in the camera/eye, rather than the other way around which is what's being described as the childhood misconception.
I'd like to note, as far as im aware, you can only 'catch' your new friend in the sweep-scan, after you catch them in the big scan you can see them with the focused scan
I’m confused why it’s a shadow wouldn’t the dots just project onto the man? Or does the LiDAR just glitch out and not project because it’s a mysterious entity ?
@@HillBilly_Urbex The first time you scan the entity, it's initially red. The gun you use tries to save this material but fails so it just ignores the texture all together which is why all you see is the outline of where the entity was stood. Technically there's always dots on the entity when you scan it, you just can't see them because there's no texture for it.
@@CannedPsycho- oh thank you :D
And that only makes it scarier when you shoot your focused beam at it and it stays there. Like at 16:39
after playing around with it a bit I think its actually just that it only spawns the stalker in after a certain number of sweep scans, around 20 something. If you turn off blindness even if you look directly at it it doesn't trigger the cutscene and the stalker just disappears after a minute or so. I wonder why. I kept trying to find out how it spawned it in, whether it was there and walking around but I guess they're just spawning in the model since it doesn't move or animate.

This code is found in the lidarscanner swep.
me and a buddy of mine tried this today and we found a creepy detail. for context, my friend has a kinda bad computer so they are a bit laggy. i think this was the lag but when they moved around and i did the wide scan thing it left behind these wispy red trails and every now and then a solid mass of red dots, and it almost looked like someone on the ground crawling away from some unknown and unseen force. again, it might have been the lag, but it still creeped me out enough to share.

This is just like Scanner Sombre, except that Scanner Sombre will stick to moving sprites. It's very unique.
I like to think that one of the reasons this is so terrifying is just because of the sound scanning it makes:
A loud, borderline reptilian hiss. It helps activate your fight or flight response by pure instinct alone.

Creepy thought of the day - this is actually how we see. We never see what is there, right now. We only ever see light that has already bounced off a surface, some time ago. Added to this, it takes additional time for the brain to process the information. So we stumble through reality blind and deaf, with our sense of "now" actually being a heavily-processed and highly-interpreted echo of what "was".
Anyway, very cool idea. Would be a very creepy and fun to use alternative to night vision in sci-fi horror games. Would recommend Duskers, actually - very different game of course, but you're remote-controlling drones and you don't get to see what's actually there; you just see what their sensors pick up, which is a low-detail, heavily-interpreted neon wireframe view of the world, with true nightmarish nature of threats never actually revealed.

What's scary throughout this video is the spans of time when you *aren't* using the laser to scan. Because the existing dots won't move if something changes. You should check out either "Ghosts of Carmel Maine" or "DinoNuggets741" on RUclips. These two alone have probably the most compelling ghost videos out there. Dino is more "short, sweet, and to the point" and its that idea that you are asleep and you hear loud banging, whispering in the ear, and feeling something bump your bed in total darkness at your most vulnerable 😨😭
I literally played this last night. It absolutely got me. I had no idea it was a horror mod, no idea at all! I thought it was some just interesting concept gamemode, simulating robotic sensors and the like, right? I didn't read the description, comments, nothing. I had no warning, at all.
You know those horror games that pretend they're not horror games, yeah? This is one of those but it had literally no hint whatsoever (outside of a picture on the page I didn't see!)
And then it just *got me* while I was trying to 100% fill the map. Horror games usually rarely get me, but I had no idea this was a horror mod. It absolutely got me and holy fuck, I fell in love very quickly. Beautiful.
My theory is that you the character are in some sort of environment where human eyes can’t see anything, so you’re given a device to help you see and navigate. Your job, well, mission, is to scan out the entire place. However there’s something beyond what the device can render. The device also hurts this creature and so it screams, but the device only translates that into a strange static. Bit creepy…
I appreciate that past the initial jump scare with red man, It becomes completely benign provided you don't have nerves of goddamn candy-floss, if you encounter it enough times it becomes evident that it's just an invisible NPC wandering around in the level,
Edit: I lied apparently the red man encounter resets after a while
One thing I do wish though, is that this gamemode had a ultra powerful full line of sight scan like the actual scanner sombre game this is based on, the medium density vertical swipe really doesn't do it for me
26:38 "Thank you guys so much for suggesting it to me...and suggesting it...and suggesting it."
Yeah...I think we went a little overboard lol. 😅
I don't know why but just hearing the pure joy and excitement in his voice makes me smile
I found this game a while back called: Scanner Sombre.
It's basically just this but a standalone game. Thought I haven't actually played it myself, it looks awesome and has this exact premise. I'm pretty sure it's horror but I could be wrong.
All I know is that you're in a cave and you're trying to get out of it or sumn. It's like 2hrs of playtime and it looks pretty cool.
This would be a fun multiplayer horror where you can only see your friends when you scan and whatever is following you
yeah that's what I thought, like that one game markiplier plays when there's that big blind rat
Can you play in multiplayer?
11:40 At the exact moment that happened, my GPU freaked out (it's really old and beginning to die) and the image glitched on both my monitors lol.
This is reminding me of "The Devil's Tuning Fork" which was a horror type game that used sonar as way to see to the game's environment.
The “error message” jumpscare, if you can even call it that, was such a slow burn, that once I realized what was happening, that when I saw the outline of a person, I was already in full panic mode.
The first time it went wrong was gold tbh
A terminal screen appeared, like something was wrong, then the shape appeared, and scares me. And then stayed there one moment. For some time I was scared to scan, but then I realized. I'm actually really surprised that that was Gmod
I think the other creature is a bit like you. IT cannot see "normally" either. It follows your beams and follows you when you use your equipment which it can sense.
I downloaded this mod for myself, and booted up insertion 2 from CSGO. Something I noticed was that the map was mirrored. Really helps make you feel lost. I booted up a flipped version of nuke, and found it just like i remember in csgo.
8:53 I think that's the water section lmao
I glad he mentioned Iron Lung, because that's exactly what LIDAR reminded me of right off the bat
16:38 when that thing wasnt going away I was borderline pissing my pants lol
Same, my eyes bugged out. I didn't even know it could stay like that.
if you like this mod, you should play "Scanner sombre", because this is the exact mechanic, even the same sound, mechanics, and look
"Its like being in a little kid's room with all the glow-in-the-dark stars glued to the ceiling"
(5:42)
Such a terrifying concept
I just got the thought about that the figure you see. It always makes a shadow in the scan and as one comment said below maybe the material is flesh that the scanner cant detect. Now imagine the thing when you scan it jsut runs away but leaves the shadow there. What if it stalks you but really wants to avoid you.
what i love about this horror is there isn't anything trying to get you per say or harm you it lores you into that false sense of security tricking you into thinking its a neat puzzle game witha nice twist to gameplay and then it pulls the rug when it shows that there is a entity secretly watching you or maybe it just exists here, then hit you with some extremely unsettling music that makes you feel unsafe like something is moving closer and closer like you aren't as safe as you once thought you aren't alone anymore or are you?
it's like Scanner Sombre, you should play it
what a coincidence, I was just watching Richter Overtime playing this on a livestream
It's very apparent, and very wonderful, that LiDAR is very much inspired by _Scanner Sombre,_ a game that I have seen _long_ before I even heard of this mod.
If you haven't heard of it before... Well, it's best if you play it yourself.
Just know that it uses the exact same sight mechanic that LiDAR uses, just without the same color-coding.
In Sombre, that's used for _distance,_ I believe, not _material,_ and you can't see into the distance as far as you can here...
A horror game called "Stifled" Allows you too see but only when sound is made however in some areas you can see normally
your sound creates a white pulse that lets you see in the area shortly. Stuff that naturally makes sound also creates the same white pulse as well as throwing something. The Monster creates a red pulse and only can find you by sound meaning if it is nearby you will not be able to really see that much
I think you should try this on some of the liminal space maps.
Now it can feel foreign and "off" twice as much.
I always loved the concept of Lidar, im glad I finally found a long video About it.
5:47 I think of it like looking at the night sky with all the little dots being stars and other celestial bodies.
"this has such so much potential for horror" oh little do you know.
Now imagine if these were real entities. You have to catch them in the scan or else they'll get you, which is a very scary gameplay mechanic.
a cool kind of horror game is one that stresses you out when you're doing/not doing certain things: like standing still, moving too fast, not looking around, not using some item or tool etc.
totally unrelated: every time something spooky happened & they STOPPED USING THE TOOL my volume mysteriously lowered
That first jumpscare got me SO good. Huge props to the developer(s) for that! I thought it was just like a fun little mechanic and that you'd just comfily explore existing maps XD
I didn't even think jumpscares were possible using the LIDAR mechanic
You're talking about LIDAR like someone would talk about a 'smartphone' 30 years ago.
A game that gives you a similar feeling but without a horror aspect (currently) is 4D Miner. I'd reckon you would adore the gameplay and the idea, despite it not having horror elements.
Spiders with like 30 legs that stalk you in a dimension you can't see is terrifying
0:31 Ah yes, because I have had a day where some cosmic deity ate the sun
13:35 You just basically described Plato's Allegory of the Cave.
LIDAR mirrors the map to make it "Backwards" as you noticed, so while your brain remembers the map it's thrown for a loop at the fact that everything is a mirror version of the same map. Maps I had played hundreds of thousands of times became an unfamiliar maze to me the most pronounced was 2fort from tf2. I stepped out of spawn and immediately walked to the left stepping into a room that I recognized but barely. I had made it into the small indoor yard before the stairs that lead to the briefcase room.
