Greenland | Exploring the wild East Coast

- There is something unique about remote places - they capture your imagination and make you dream and wonder. One of those places is known as the last frontier: Greenland. A country bordered by oceans and covered almost all year round in ice.
We embarked in May and the ice extended up to 100 kilometers into the sea, known as the sea ice. On our way along the wild East Coast, we sailed by massive icebergs while constantly breaking through the sea ice. The scrapes against the hull went through the ship with a rumble and a noise that was audible everywhere. The temperature felt cold, dry and freezing, and I shivered under many layers of clothing as I captured the beauty of this fading place. And when the Arctic sun dramatically set on the horizon, the blankets of the icy landscape were painted in pink and purple hues.
Some cinematic visuals from Greenland 🇬🇱 Couple of months ago I had the chance to board the Le Commandant Charcot, an ice breaking hybrid exploration vessel with polar class 2 rating, allowing to explore magical places in the far Arctic! Sailing from Reykjavík, Iceland we spent days navigating through drift ice with ever changing ice conditions every day towards the wild East Greenland coast at a time before even the supply boats came to the small settlements like Tasiilaq and Kuummiit.
With the largest population of sled dogs in the Arctic, Greenland is unique in maintaining its traditional mushing culture. This form of transport still plays a crucial part for their lives up North and on the East Coast.
Also the Greenland Dogs is a very specific breed found nowhere else in the world. They are able to traverse difficult terrain with ease and a high tempo. As working dogs they are especially valued for their physical strength and endurance, with a tireless and bold mentality!
Thanks to Ponant and the crew from Le Commandant Charcot for making this happen!
Filmed on Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 24-70mm 2.8, RF 16mm f2.8, RF 70-200mm 2.8 and RF 100-400mm
