  • In this latest episode of "Fused", Dr. Cyr explains how smoking and anti-inflammatory use affect spinal fusion recovery, why nicotine significantly increases the risk of complications such as failure to fuse and post-operative infections, why NSAIDs also have an inhibitory effect on healing fusions, and much more!

I am a Vaper and I had spine surgery 2 months ago. I healed up quickly and did not have the problems usually experienced by a smoker. Apparently the British Medical Association is correct in reporting that Vaping is significantly safer than smoking.

Hey I met with a car accident a while agp, a surgery was performed on my lumbar area stabilising it with 6 screws ( L4-S) , almost two months later I preferred to stay off the pain killer medicines and planned on smoking cannabis, which caused a slight numbness in my left leg and foot especially. Do you think it'll cause some sort of permanent nerve damage because I smoked pot ?

Easy advice to give unless you have been a smoker for 45 plus years. I have to quit cold turkey. I pity my wife.

It’s not your fault.. the surgeons and schools and anti tobacco never said this.. no where would it be known until it’s too late.. just like most medical problems. Eliminating nicotine for good is hard when you live with smokers in a house full of smoke.

I am hoping to get referred to you. I had a double spinal fusion L3-S1 in 2011. I am in terrifying pain, that does not exist on the 1-10 pain scale. I also believe my muscles have torn in several areas -- now that is an indescribable and horrifying feeling. The hardware might be wonky as well. I am getting an MRI soon to get a read on what's happening with the hardware at minimum. How do I assess the muscles that I explained above? During my surgery they cut one long and three smaller incisions through my muscles on both sides of the spine. The doctors I have seen don't understand what I am attempting to explain to them. Where do I go to get answers? Kind regards. Shane (SAN ANTONIO)

I smoke weed. Ive had a lumbar surgery on my l4, l5, and s1. The worst is coming. I need a level 2 fusion. Ive been smoking weed most of my life. I dont smoke tobacco or drink. My doctors says dont smoke. I have two months to stop as of yesterday. I threw away all my stuff related to weed. I guess this is goodbye.

Love your video series. Thankfully I am a non-smoker so I don't have to worry about that. I underwent four level ACDF about 4 weeks ago and I am recovering well. I'm wearing a bone growth stimulator. My cardiologists is recommended that I take an 81mg baby aspirin as I've been doing for the past six or seven years. I understand that NSAIDS and the like or contradictory to proper healing, but would the baby aspirin by itself impact my healing I am taking lots of protein, calcium supplements as well as vitamin d to enhance my bone growth. How do you feel about the baby aspirin?

What is your opinion on CBD oil as an inflammatory? I have bad GERD and am not allowed any NSAIDS. Tylenol doesn’t cut it. Your opinion please. Thank you sir.
