I read a thing once that said it is very important to read books that are made for younger people because oftentimes those are the books that teach important life lessons as they want to give children a ‘moral to the story’ so you keep reading those middle-grade books!!

I also read The Haunting of Hill House in November and I found it so fascinating! Shirley Jackson really managed to capture the angst all the characters feel through their conversations - the more frightened they got, the sillier they tried to sound and make jokes about themselves and the house, but they always felt kinda off. As if all of the people in the house were playing some sort of false "happy person" to hide behind. I found that to be such an interesting observation of how people react when they feel uncomfortable and it made the book so much more creepy to me.

I also detest the “third act” in romances. I’m surprised it still ranks so high for so many. I find romances so lame and eye-rolly. I just can’t do it. Chloe Brown was so hyped up i went for it despite knowing better deep down. I ended up DNF’ing, 1-star, regret, all the things.

My all-time favourite book when I was a kid, that I constantly got out of the library was her novel "Book of a Thousand Days". I was obsessed with it, and when I first got a kobo when I was around 13, it was the first thing I bought on it. I like think about this book still so much, and so I reread it a couple days ago. Like it obviously has its issues, and I think if I read it now for the first time (I was obsessed and reread it constantly between 10 and 13 and I'm now 23), I wouldn't like it as much since I'm not really into fantasy. But its just filled with so much nostalgia and happier times and worlds I wish I could write its wonderful.

Nicest Parts of Hell by Billy Ray Middleton Jr is one that surprised me in the way the title's meaning was made even more amazing after I read the book. The characters were multidimensional and it was fun to watch what they faced when an apocolypse popped up. Ray, a rockstar still in love with Roby who is now in prison was my favorite character...but Marvin also stole my heart. He's a gentle giant who is misunderstood. I feel your rant about hating Resurrection because I just finished Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller, and I hated it! I know a lot of people love it, but the structure didn't work at all for me and it felt so obvious! I think that I'm going to give Resurrection a shot because I found out I can do an independent reading study in law school, and Resurrection and Bleak House by Dickens both sound perfect for that. I'm really curious what you'll think about Bleak House because, although I haven't read it, that was the quintessential book everyone recommended before I was starting law school. I've never heard of Resurrection, which is surprising, but also not because American law is descended from English common law Dickens would've been writing about. And as for Resurrection lacking a resolution, well unfortunately the legal system hasn't come much further in the last hundred odds years. I think it's crazy Tolstoy recognized that as early as the late 1800s.

Hi Emma🌻 I know you are not a fan of short stories but considering how much you loved A hundred years of solitude, I think that you are going to love the compilation of short stories by Gabriel García Marquez:)

Great demolition job on Ressurection, though my take was that the tone of the whole book was to demonstrate the grinding unfairness of the Russian Legal system, hence the sense of repetition. No satisfactory ending as there never was with the system according to Tolstoy and many others.
