I met a gentleman once who said he would buy vintage cars, and rather than fixing them up, he would "part them out." That is, he would break down the cars and sell the parts to others who were restoring vintage cars. He focused on Ford Mustangs and said that he made more doing this than restoring the cars.

I have several powersport toys--Jet skis, snowmobiles, and motorcycles that are worth WAY more in parts than I could ever sell them for whole. Even in good running shape. Even breaking down the engines into individual pieces can yield a higher rate of return, even if there's nothing wrong with it.

2:25. Yeah.... I've tried that car flipping thing. It doesn't work out so well. The reason is that there are too many people out there who think they can do it, so they push up the price of the vehicles at the auctions. And speaking of which, why are they at the auction? They are there because someone else already looked at it and didn't want it.
Otherwise, repair shops would double as a used car dealer, but they typically do not. There's way more money in fixing them than there is buying them, fixing them, and re-selling them. Buying one to sell later is only what you do when you have a smoking deal just happen to fall on your lap and/or your shop's business just happens to be slow.

People throw around the term "passive income" too loosely. In my opinion, there's no such thing as "truly passive income". It's almost like a crop. You have to take the time to "plant seeds" and get the thing started. And then you just have to "water it" to keep it going. But not PASSIVE. Also, selling random planners and stuff online is half and half. Not just anyone can do that. It's a bit better suited for influencers, or business owners who have a following where they can point you to the product IMO.

Do you plan to tell your insurance company about your side hustle?
The vast, vast majority of buyers are absolutely unable to judge the condition of a used car. I was a former mechanic and body man. One bad transmission, months of profits are gone. If an unhappy buyer sues, they may not collect anything, but you get to pay your lawyer.

Not to mention attending auctions all the time, owning a truck and trailer to tow vehicles that aren’t quite roadworthy, etc.

I question the income level and steadiness of income with a vending machine but I think the biggest problem is where do you put it? Any business will want a cut of what you get. You need permission from the city bus agency to put it at a bus station where it will most likely be destroyed (noticed at Madison, WI bus transfer points that they disappeared because of that reason). Most likely vending machines would be a good thing in someone's den or man cave so they wouldn't have to go all the way to the kitchen to get a sparkling water or diet soda if you rig it like in the movie "Big" where Tom Hank's character had a vending machine where he didn't have to insert coins.
