WNBC(TV) analog nightlight shutdown - the final 2 minutes

- This really IS the end of WNBC's analog broadcasts on channel 4 in New York. The station ceased regular analog programming on the channel on June 12, 2009 at 12:30PM. For the next 2 weeks, a loop of DTV instructional videos played, then on June 26 at 10:58 AM, it ended like this.
This is the last 2 minutes, picking up with the end of the last cycle of the NAB's DTV video. What followed was some black, some bars, a variation of a 1970's WNBC-TV test pattern, a brief logo montage, then analog hash. Note that there's no audio with the bars, black or the TP. Other than the server which played back the videos, there were no devices in the nightlight equipment chain that could generate audio. This is the extended version, (the shorter, final 1-minute version is also available here) which shows in real time the transition from nightlight to GOODBYE.
He never did repeat it in Spanish, followed again in English...
This is the most important part.
Clickbait tho...
Actually I saw a screen on WNBC that said in English and Spanish. *not epicc*

@Splashy I read that and it happened to match the deadline.
It repeated English then Spanish and repeatedly many times until it match the deadline, at June 26th 2009. It would be better if they do English and Spanish but with a warning so they would understand.
When the square came, my heart dropped and then when I saw the words “GOODBYE” on the screen just sit there in limbo, all my hair raised up and I started to tear up. Then analog tv was cut, now it was just static. I have no words for what I’m feeling rn. That’s scary af

Who would have thought, after a half-century of news, comedy, and history, that the final image ever broadcasted on WNBC analog would be a black background, with the word "Goodbye"? It was a very fitting end to a wonderful era of technology.

thanks for the video!
The instructional video, with the music and the subtitles, reminds me a bit of a safety video on airliners with video screens. I almost want to insert the flat end into the buckle and check for the nearest exit. I'd be a little freaked out if the safety video showed test patterns and "goodbye," however.

Very interesting. Still looks quite good for a slide that is 30+ years old (especially the greens and blues, which in usual situations suffer most particularly). I asked about the fading because I've experimented with simulations, as well as "reverse fading" by taking something with reddish blacks to make it look more normal.
This closing made me tear up.
Man, this gave me chills.
Anyone else got chills watching this?

Well,Rip Analog in Mainland USA. Our only hope is Alaska.
That's one PAL test pattern (or "test card," as they call them over there), and probably the best known. There is also a computer-generated one, which is various color boxes and pattern fills on a grid background.
Gotta Say, Hands Down it's the best analog shutdown in the U.S. in my view, most stations near me counted it down on a news broadcast or just shut it down in the middle of programming back then, even after the nightlight period on some of the channels, they just roughly shutdown in the middle of the nightlight video. this one is very interesting and cool how it shows their logo over time.
Your comment is appreciated by the creator of this short clip.
After 2 weeks of the NAB loop running continuously, there was probably no one watching at the time this aired!
Man I thank you, i would've loved to see this but I didn't live there, like i said above, where i lived down south, it was roughly shutdown with no nightlight or cut off during nightlight programming this is definitely a master piece and a favorite of mine@@kiotr2009
We basically saw this station’s life flash before it eyes before saying goodbye for the final time ever.
The "Goodbye" message at the end was quite creepy.

AMAZING. I was surprised WNBC didn't use their 1940's-era test pattern when it was WNBT - that would have been awesome. JG
Or their late-50s one, when they were WRCA -- but I imagine the different call letters would have confused people.
For those confused, he did repeat it in Spanish (supported channels), but it was subtitled in Spanish.
I saw WNBC 4's nightlight info from my home near Miami via sporadic-E in late June '09 when my local WFOR 4 was gone for good. The only time I caught NYC television from here, due to co-channels.
No, I think your reception skipped to NYC. That's called DXing.
Oh god, whoever was in charge on that day made it more special showing all the previous logos in the past.
Heartbreaking at the “GOODBYE” before analog signal cut off. 😢
I can’t believe on the day that I graduated HS that most of these NAB channels [likely?] shut off the analog signal after the final loop.

Yeah when I saw that it gave off the eerie vibes
I think this 1947 variation (without the colors, of course) was also used by the ABC O&O's in the early years of their existence (from their initial sign-ons in 1948 and '49). Another 1947 variation (with an "en dash" between "1947" and "NATIONAL") had single black horizontal lines on the far left and right, and white lines at far top and bottom. I wonder, was this slide faded like that, or was some Photoshopping done to make it look faded?
2:12 "NBC, we haven't heard much from you today. Any last words?'
1:39 nightly news theme 82-85
The government mandated the switch to Digital in 2005, but waited until 2007 to promote the message. When they decided the date to turn off analog signal in 2005, they should have began promoting the switch that same year and started the converter box coupon distribution program, so that way people would have more than enough time to switch and they should have been showing more programmings to teach people how to switch because commercials they showed didn't explain clearly on how to switch.
At least the US subsidized the affected consumer. I’ve heard that in other countries, you were on your own.
Thats a sign-off you would see at the end of the world 💀
I think they were referring to the straight bars (white through black) that are prevalent in countries where the PAL standard is/was used, as opposed to the "split" bars of NTSC.

What a touching moment. This is one great way that Mediacorp (my country's national broadcaster) may wish to do when it shuts down analog signals by end of this year.
As a millenial i felt unaffected by the shutdown until the station jingles and the logos flashed. For some reason it gave me goosebumps and it got stuck in my head for a while. If you had grown up watching NBC and saw this, as an old person you will feel sentimental and emotional at the same time.
Was it really THAT damaging to the economy to have analog tv??? Come on. Now I cant watch a channel as basic/simple as cbs without a stupid box :P
no, but it would help to clear the airwaves up.

I really wish here in Brazil the analog goodbye was something like this. The stations kept for 2 months a card with instructions, and the suddenly the signals gone
Compared to every single stations that had to shut off their analogs, this was the best send off, NBC really had kicked it off. Also what version of Nightly News theme are they playing? Sounds quite harmonic
Not sure if it was the nightly news theme but it was probably a theme used in the 50s or 60s
Thanks for your comment. That NBC News theme heard here dates to 1982. A portion of it was also used by NBC Radio as the hourly news sounder starting about mid-year 1982. In 1985, NBC News adopted John Williams "The Mission" as the theme for TV news programs, including NIGHTLY, TODAY and MEET THE PRESS. Radio required a sounder that could come in, establish, and fade in 7 seconds. The powers that be decided that that couldn't be done with Williams' orchestral piece, so the hourlies continued to use the 1982 theme for several more years.

Actually until 1985. The Mission was introduced in September 1985.
NBC 4 was the first station on NY TV, so whats better to do than to thank it for being alive....
Actually, WNBC's color test pattern was a custom job, with colors added to a 1947 vintage TP.
Definitely a custom job. WNBC-TV was the station's legal ID until 1992, then it became simply WNBC. By 1992, the "N" logo had been phased out for years, and the peacock was the logo we use today.
It's actually a real test pattern with the "-tv" prefix edited out.
The proper legal ID for the sign-off was truthfully "WNBC New York," not WNBC-TV. Yes, the original TP could've played with the correct ID next to the 1986 peacock. Admittedly, it was better than the (rather poor) recreation of WCBS's test pattern with the flip to nightlight service.
In any event, the 1982 Nightly News theme played here was used as NBC Radio News' theme well after GE sold the radio network... until Westwood One finally dissolved it... in 2003! So it had a long, long run.
The a gang I do disagree, 66 WNNNNNNNNNBC ceased to exist in 1988, after all
STOP HIDING IN THE COMMENTS, GET BACK UP THERE AND FACE THE GOODBYE MESSAGE!!!
they should have kept the nightlight program for like 4 months or better yet for a year to make sure everyone is DTV ready. having the nightlight program just for a few weeks was not enough because many won't be ready in time. A lot of people still need help.
But again, still look like cilckbait, so in the last 2 video they should elther add a warning, or during sign off they should add warning. The sign off cilp would be bring back memories about that but pepole will still scared. At least it have goodbye, but it still not a good idea. IDK about that much but it would be better if they add a last warning before it goes static.
