Bill Myers.. The VOICE of WLWT throughout its glory days! I like that they brought him back to announce this sign off.. very classy touch!

    Classy sign off.
The only thing is that they were NOT the first NBC affiliate in the country.
That honor goes to either WRGB Schenectady, NY or WPTZ (now KYW-TV) Philadelphia.

OK, it depends HOW you slice it:
      As experimental: 13 January 1928 for GE-owned WRGB as W2XB , undated in 1932 for Philco-owned WPTZ / KYW as W3XE.
      Start as Commercial Licensee : 1 July (license given) + 1 September 1941 (#3) for WPTZ / KYW, 26 February 1942 (#4) for WRGB.
(So far, WRGB* , today's CBS 6 near Albany, NY is one of only 2 stations licensed during US active role in WWII, the other being WABD (#5), today's WNYW Fox5 in NYC)
Both are now CBS stations (KY-3 as an O&O, RGB-6 as a Sinclair-owned one), having started both as NBC affiliates, not O&O by RCA. They were the 3rd and 4th commercially licensed TV stations in US, while WLW-T started MUCH LATER, as experimental W8XCT in '46 and only licensed in 9 February 1948 (not even 1st in OH, there was WEWS ABC-5 in Cleveland licensed first).
      * Longest CONTINUOUS USE of a call sign, since 1942

I actually remember this live. I had a dual broadcast TV so I made sure to turn over to the analogue signal to watch the final moments of broadcast.

This channel is the first TV station on Cincinnati. Then, NBC's affiliated station and the first color broadcast, then, the first digital TV and the end of broadcast!

I like how Bill Meyers, the long time WLWT on air talent did the voice over for the last analog signal. Nice touch.

I grew up in the Greater Cincinnati area and often watched WLWT on Channel 5. This station made a lot of historic firsts in the world of broadcasting.

I wish they would have had the slide at 0:36 up a few more seconds, a beautiful period artwork piece, which goes back to the old Crosley/Avco network (channels 2, 4 5 were WLWD Dayton, WLWC Columbus, and of course, WLWT Cincinnati), which was split up among different owners. 2 is now WDTN and 4 WCMH.

The old test pattern, which was replaced by color bars, before programming aired for the day.

Goodnight Mr. Crosley. Someday, somehow, someway, we will need analog transmissions again.

A classy ending. WHIO in Dayton did a live "remote" from their master control room, but I think I prefer the way WLWT signed off.

By far the best analog signoff in the whole country. But no ones talking about the nightlight, WLWT is also the only station I’m aware of that did their own nightlight. I honestly think that’s better with the one from Mike, and this WLWT nightlight would be more helpful.

      1998-2009?!?
WLWT is decades old. Interesting is the fact that the Crosley/Avco stations had a unique callsign structure. The Cincinnati flagship TV station had the call sign WLW-T (not WLWT nor WLW-TV as one would expect), furthermore, their co-owned stations had the same unique call sign scheme.
WLW-D Dayton (yes, massive overlap of coverage that would have been forbidden until recently).
      WLW-I Indianapolis.
      WLW-A Atlanta.
All of these are still on the air, albeit digital. Dayton is now WDTN, Cincinnati is WLWT (no dash).
      Indianapolis is WTHR
      Atlanta is WXIA.

I only wish the stations in Spokane, WA did their analog shutdowns as classy as WLWT did, but alas, they didn't. I agree, I prefer these kinds of goodbyes to the way other stations said goodbye to analog.

No. You saw a "Piece of America" being reborn.
The reception of digital tv is so much better than analog tv that I went from receiving 7 or so barley watchable channels on 'analog' to over 40 channels that come in perfectly clear with the new digital technology. And the ota channels in HD look better than anything that the pay TV services can provide.

Good signoff, but too bad they didn't play the national anthem one last time for an extra historical touch.

  • @toddstewart9070
    @toddstewart9070 5 лет назад

They should have ended with the national anthem, like how tv stations did in the 80s and prior when they were about to sign off the air for the night. Would have been more dramatic.

I think these networks were a bit too sappy with their signoffs on the switchover. Who cares? The network still exists. Just run your test card on dt.

You've seen chunks of golden America die. Things have just gotten worse since the DTV transmission. TV series and hit songs have gotten gay; kids have started to be about their phones instead of their imagination; too many people have a lot of piercings and tattoos, which is unattractive; and the list goes on. Almost everything made these days suck.
