Imagine having the money to play around with this kind of gear lol. I'm still stuck in the phase of me and my mates dicking about with DSLRs, GoPros, phones and whatever else we can get our hands on. Skateboards for dollys, rope and a pole sticking out a backpack for handheld stabilisation, and calling in favours from everyone I've ever met haha!
Knowing the gear you guys use is always so helpful to know. I always trust the things you promote and I've bought my c100 and aputure ls 1s led light in the process. I even built my own diy light bar from you guys. Learning the right tools are a great starting point to study what fits the best to my needs and these videos always help. Haven't been disappointed with any of it either, great video as always
Filmriots whole purpose is to show the different phases of film making. So while yes we have sadly moved out of the whole DIY feel, we've moved up to a higher level of education that we can all aspire too. And once we start getting out on the lower end productions, I think we all will appreciate seeing these episodes. I miss the old DIY stuff as much as the next guy, but the quality of what these guys put out have sky rocketed. and hopefully it will help us when we start getting to that more semi pro range.
It'd be cool if you guys could get some new sponsors. I don't think I'm the only one who just completely tunes out with the usual domain.com, especially as it's the same thing most of the time. Something like a film equipment company would be really interesting! Just something that your general viewers might get a bit more out of :) Never the less, great video as always. Keep up the awesome films and tips!
Technological advantages are only a fraction of the equation. You can have an imax camera but if you have no story or anything interesting to put on camera, then there’s no point. Just make the most out of what you do have
In 2022 I'm still shooting on a d7100 (2013) with a cheap kit lens and a yongnuo 50mm 1.8 without a stabilizer. Im using my broken 5 years old 20$ tripod but im happy with my gear. It could be worse :)
Yea could you go over how you would personally handle production audio recording (specifically dialogue)? I'm curious why no lavalieres were mentioned during the audio portion and just want to hear your stance on it?
I would personally like to see some sort of post apocalyptic film from you guys. That way you could get into more advanced color correction to set the whole, "world ended" mood and maybe cool ideas for like props and things.
Lets just all make this clear, there was a lot of shit that you dont need that he used, and in my opinion when you start just from the minimum you learn so much more.
It is always nice to have half a million dollars of gear just lying around the house. Except for the camera, you seem to be using more and better gear than they used in the whole of Indiana Jones.
Hey Ryan what kind of Lavalier microphone do you have I'm starting a RUclips channel and also I have a camera recommendation the Panasonic gh4 with the 18-35mm with a speed booster with a I footage crane and a I footage slider
Hey film riot dudes. great episode! Maybe next time you could give a rough estimate of how much we should expect to dish out for such equipment? I know prices vary from renter to renter, but that is extremely valuable info for us filmmaking noobs. green power ranger is the best.
+Jake Smith What's with you replying all over this comment section spreading negativity? If you don't have something polite and/or worthwhile to say, don't say anything.
S&S Pictures Its funny he mentioned that bc I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I'm going to light a scene in the forest in my next short film so I'd like to know how he did it.
FilmRiot I know this is a fairly old video and what I'm about to ask might seem very obvious but how do you get different angles of the same scene? I'm guessing the only answer is to have multiple cameras but is there any other way of doing it? Also lets say a shot is from behind character x, then seamlessly switches to an overall shot of two characters, all without pauses or anything, how doesn't the first camera show up in the second, wider angled shot? The explanation I thought of was that the first camera (the one from behind the guy) wasn't actually right behind him but zoomed up to his back but then how do they keep the resolution the same? wouldn't the quality go down or is it some sort of lens they use. Honestly sorry for not knowing absolutely anything, relatively new to all of this.
A question out of the blue - What do you guys think about the Samyang/Rokinon lenses designed specifically for video (t aperture, focus ring, etc)? Best solution on a budget?
Yo man I have a release pretty soon and I REALLY need to find out some info about how to shoot an old water tower that looks like it has 2 marksmen up there? I was gonna place the guys up there, but the city got all "whiney" about it!
Damn, I thought a simple Gimble, a cheap DSLR and Ambient Lighting with Lip-Synced Audio was all we needed to shoot on a Budget. Then again, you never mentioned Budget.

same lol
Domski Plays Hey, onwards and upwards eh?
WeegieMovies I was there too a couple years ago. Now I have a Red and other "fancy" stuff.
Just keep chugging along.
WeegieMovies haha!
IM RIGHT HERE WITH YA

+Only At Northfield Right in man! We still use our C100 mkI to shoot the episodes.
Film Riot awesome episode ryan and crew!!!
Film Riot The best I have is one of those Sony camcorders.
I just about died laughing at 1:18. Give that man a raise! hahaha.

CinemaByte wasn't funny

LA, Chicago, and New York, I Just learned something new! :)
So much gear that I wish I had but can't affordable. Hell yeah.
William Herasme stealing is just borrowing permanently
Rent it.
Seriously Yavi I like the way you think.
+William Herasme I don't own 90% of it. I rent it when I have projects that have a budget (which is rare)
These guys just rent it.
I'm a simple man. I see a Film Riot video, I press like.
First step: Have a lot of money...
Step zero: Make money and invest it in better gear over a period of time in YEARS.
It doesn't happen over night.. definitely have to get a second job.. or a third job.

Josiah Zinicola Agreed, and if I recall, Ryan actually has brought this subject up a few times in the past.
Second Step, throw it all away and buy the stuff and then cry, because now you might be suffering for lack of Ideas.

Can you do some stuff with STOP MOTION?! Specifically, lighting a green screen, and evenly lighting a subject, please.
I always wonder why you don't shoot a feature film! You shoot on such a high level - why not bigger? Also i'm the 100th comment!
Ryan... What's wrong, buddy? You seem low today. :( #PrayForRyan

Literally clicked into this video to see basic gear used for short films, ended seeing a lot more stuff than I expected, lmao!!!!
Flex lights are so much fun to use and super versatile. Would be cool to see a high quality diy version
You are killing it with sponsors. I feel like it's channel made for sponsors + random shit we record through week.
Ok lets make a short film. The first thing you are going to need is... A fRiCkiNg ALeXa
Those light sheets look amazing!
@filmriot You guys are great! How have you managed to maintain the quality and novelty for decades? Not only maintain but increase!
OMG, That black board at 01:32, I thought it looked so stupid when I did that. But now that I've seen you do it, I feel like a pro.
Hey Film Riot :)
Thanks, bought the same Alexa camera that you used. Got some amazing results!
You bought an Alexa Mini?!!!
love this channel! keep coming back time and time again.. keep it up fellas
you never cease to crack me up Ryan, lol
and I'm just over here with a 4 year old DSLR, the cheapest Rode mic I could buy, and an equally as cheap stabilizer from amazon.....maybe one day....
Caroline R
All you need is PASSION.

Saying flat, side, or tall seems faster than LA, Chicago, and New York. But hey, names are fun!
Corey the Editor my guess is they say new york because new york is called the big apple and when they call for new york it's the tallest it can be
THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO RYAN!!! THIS IS GOING TO HELP ME SO MUCH!!!!!!🎥📽
Great Video again! :)
You meant he made a Great Video Again!
Angel Kanchev what the fuck are you talking about
Overwhelmed.
Soon you'll be saying "I know you've heard me say that I know you've heard me say that the list of domains is growing"...
I thought you guys would've used a Movi M10 or 15 for the Alexa, cool to see you fit the camera on the M5!
1:17-1:27 that part wth Justin was hilarious hahaha
That cracked me up.
i'm from morocco you are great rayan
Wow.That is awesome gear.I will buy them all tomorrow.Must be really really cheap !
What's with all this hate mail? Be grateful they're showing us this stuff anyway, thumbs up Ryan 👍🏻
Is it sad that 1:17 was probably the funniest thing I've seen in a long while? My god! xD
But great episode in general!
I just bought a D5300! I think for what we both do that camera is rock solid! Invest your money on better lenses ;)
awesome video. love your channel. love the gear!
Whoo Rian you are coming up on the 1 million subs! Cant wait till your there so i can congratulate you! I have 18 so just 999982 to go :D
Can you guys do an episode just about lighting outside? Especially at night? It's something I've been trying to figure out for a while now.
Film Riot has definitely grown out of DIY
Either Justin is HUGE or my can lights are twice the size of yours. I've got 6 and I agree, they are the best. Just so good.
Gear for a Short Film ?!!! those are more than Disney has
Film Riot is a best channel for learb about film making i think. Keep make artworks dude.
Your video tutorials should be titled $50,000 budget filming equipment for beginners

you guys should start doing " Fantastically Terrible moments in cinema" again!
Hey Ryan, Out here in L.A. we call the Apple Box position that is completely flat "California" not LA ;)
I love this channel.
Hey Ryan what kind of Lavalier microphone do you have I'm starting a RUclips channel and also I have a camera recommendation the Panasonic gh4 with the 18-35mm with a speed booster with a I footage crane and a I footage slider
Buy the G7 instead!
That looks fun being the remote focus puller.
If you fail, the whole team needs to redo the whole work. Yeah, they will kill you....
Sounds fun, haha.
I need to go back to the old videos, this for the higher budgeted folks
Can you please do a vid on that pull focus? I'd need to know more 😤
Almost a million subs!
OMG 1 MILLION LETSGOOO
Hey film riot dudes. great episode! Maybe next time you could give a rough estimate of how much we should expect to dish out for such equipment? I know prices vary from renter to renter, but that is extremely valuable info for us filmmaking noobs.
green power ranger is the best.
TOYSSSSS I CAN"T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO GET THEM ALL NEED MORE FREELANCE WORK!! :D
1 million is closing in
When you are so early, you don't know what to do.
That means your a follower not a leader . . . and it's the age of Aquarius.
Gizmo Goose. The fuck are you on about
Holy crud the flex is $850!
Cinema Studios holy crud? Are you 9?
+Jake Smith What's with you replying all over this comment section spreading negativity? If you don't have something polite and/or worthwhile to say, don't say anything.
Jake Smith No...its just more expensive then I thought it's just my personal opinion and sadly you can't accept other people's opinions. :)
hahahhahahahahaha best part with the easy rig LOOoO!L!!KO!LO!L!OL!O!OL! LOVE YOOOOOU
I really love you guys vids so dope
Man do you have a cheaper alternative to the apple box? Don't think anyone has the money for that :\
You can actually build your own pretty cheap. Instructions are online, and a lot of new rental houses in LA do this.
"Turns out she was a cop the whole time" so many movies, but I'm going to have to guess my favorite one. A Scanner Darkly?
Yeah I live in Dallas!

This is freaking Hollywood gear
This should be titled: Gear for a Real Movie
RYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!! HUgs and kisses xo ! :)
AWESOME!!!
Ayyyyeeeee J-Rob !!!!!!!
Thank you so much!
besides the amazing gear I'm interested in where Ryan got that shirt
2:25 Where can we see that a7S project in a forest at night?
S&S Pictures Its funny he mentioned that bc I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I'm going to light a scene in the forest in my next short film so I'd like to know how he did it.
Temo Lara - It kinda helped he was using an a7S though.
Omg I love your channel
GREAT! Thank you!
Good to learn the different APPLications for the APPLE box.. :D haha.. :I
Make a feature soon Ryan coz age is running fast!
Great thanks
He Looks like the guy who made the “my brother Jordan” documentary
I'm a fan of film riot, but still don't know what he says till "I'm your host Ryan"
Nice!
Im wearing that same exact shirt your wearing in the film😂
RYAN please do an episode of the zoom f8 recorder?

Did you guys use the grip truck as the moving truck in the short?
+Unidrw Sure did! Good eye.
A question out of the blue - What do you guys think about the Samyang/Rokinon lenses designed specifically for video (t aperture, focus ring, etc)? Best solution on a budget?
1:16 WAHAAHAHAH LMFAO
Thanks so much

had to like because of the guy with the gimbal
Do you recommend the 32" monitor for watching videos of the adult kind? Asking for a friend.
The best gear you can have is a Vegan diet!
Wow I'm sure glad I got that!
A+ !
Going to take a second mortgage on the house 🏡
Adorable
But you didn't cover who is financing this stuff? Can you give us a hint?
Yeeee
Can you try anamorphic on the GH5 pls 🙏🏻
