- Talk's Kevin O'Sullivan reacts to Lisa Nandy reportedly contemplating the abolition of the BBC licence fee when the Corporation's current charter expires in December 2027, proposing its replacement with a new tax.
Under the proposed plans, the Culture Secretary is said to favor transforming the BBC into a mutual organization, granting the public direct control and ownership of the corporation.
Kevin says: "We should have the choice whether to pay for the BBC"

The answer to that would be, you never know when you may need it.
Unfortunately the BBC isn't in that category as there will never be an occasion that we would only have the BBC to fall back on as they use the same transmission facilities as all the rest and I'm sure they are no more immune to an electromagnetic pulse than all the rest, when the proverbial hits the fan, and neither are their staff more dedicated and determined to crawl from some young boys bed to fight through the rubble to give us the news that we are doomed.

@@spokes1018 True, enough. However, News, especially from a state-funded source is supposed to be presented without bias It has a care of duty to ensure it remains unbiased and balanced in its reporting of 'events'.
This is far from the case. So, why should I have to turn it off to suit the programmer's bias? I pay their wages and it's not on.
@jacobcohen-p2t that is where I differ, I cancelled my licence nearly five years ago, I have not watched live tv since, and I feel like it was the best thing I did for my health, after giving up smoking that is.
I stopped watching the BBC a couple of years ago. I use my TV for RUclips and the occasional DVD. I do not owe them any money.
No more pretence of being an actual broadcaster.

Subscription only model with delivery via iplayer for EVERYTHING. Forcing people to pay for something they do not want is not going to work.
The thing is that i don’t particularly want to pay anyone £170 odd a year to blatantly treat me as though i am not an informed, intelligent person capable of making up my own mind.

ITV and the rest get their funding from advertising and receive NOT! a penny from the licence fee. The BBC keeps it all. Yes, that's shocking, although you need the licence to watch ITV,4,5, and Freeview. Doesn't make sense.
BBC should have been made to go free trade about 30 years ago. If they are so fabulous they would pay their way. Why should we all pay a special tax for something most young people never watch.

My big argument with the license fee is that you have to pay it just to watch ANY live TV even though only the BBC actually benefits from the license fee. Why should i have to pay the license fee if i want to watch ITV on a Saturday night even though ITV is already funded by adverts. If people are willing to pay for the BBC let them, lets see if theres enough demand for their services and if not let them find another way to fund themselves

The TV licence is the only way we have of opting in or out. People have been campaigning for years, calling for the defunding of the BBC, making it go the way of subscription or adverts. But many have also said leave well enough alone, better the devil you know. Now it looks like we could all be paying, even if we never watch live TV or don't even own one. No licence no freedom of choice.
This happened in Italy. Most Italians did not pay there TV licence so the government put the license fee into energy bills, hence every Italian now pays a tv liceine,

The problem with the BBC is the News and Current Affairs department. They do a good job supporting the Arts (Promenade Concerts, Orchestras, Radio 3 are examples), Drama, Sports like Wimbledon, and Natural History, Unfortunately, it's the bias in the News and Current Affairs output that overshadows everything else. They confuse reporting news with giving opinion. A senior BBC executive said he didn't know there was a difference between news and opinion., which sums up the BBC. Popular programmes would survive being subscription only, but the more minority interest output would not be viable by subscription. Whether the BBC could apply for funding from (for example the Arts Council) to make such programmes might be part of the solution.
Can't listen to this man Robin Aitken! We don't want to pay for a licence - I never watch the BBC! But have to pay for this biased lot. The over 75s used not to have to pay, but the BBC changed this and now poor pensioners are forced to pay as TV is their only means of entertainment. Disgraceful!

In one of the most newsworthy week in politics the BBC News homepage seemed not to notice. If the National Press had last weeks issues on the front pages why didn't the BBC? Which is the bigger story, Meghan Markle's new Netflix series, the Rape Gangs or Economic Chaos? Guess which was considered newsworthy.
It is insane that you need a TV Licence to watch any Live Broadcasts even if it has nothing to do with the BBC. I have a licence so I can watch things like TalkTV. We live in a time when anyone with a phone can output a Live Broadcast.
There is already a Login for the BBC that provides extra functionality and protects Premium Content. Put all the stuff the you feel should be chargeable behind this and charge however you like, but please remove the ridiculous "Live Broadcast" criteria.

The reality isn't the actual cost of the licence its the outrageous fact that you are paying the BBC to watch live TV. TV which by it's nature now is more likely to be a different channel and NOT the BBC.

The BBC has U (formerly known as UKTV), BritBox, BBC Studios (which is claimed as independent from the licence fee) which offers TV to the rest of the World 🌎🌍 programmes that were initially produced using Licence Fee money.

And besides, if the position of Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is handed to somebody else before that date there'll be a whole new set of 'ideas' that will come into play and what Nandy decides won't even matter.

Technology is the answer if you have not paid for your TV licence it’s simple to block the BBC signal.
