Vileyka - the town with a secret past which few know. 🇵🇱 🇧🇾

- I explore the picturesque town of #Vileyka in #Minsk Oblast where I delve into its turbulent and bloody past. I also pay my respects to the Polish Army dead of the #Soviet Polish War as well as uncover the town's unique link to the famous Polish Marshal, Josef Pilsudski.
N.B. I just noticed an editing error on my part - "....this is genuine and popular movement" at 9:50.
Such an emotionally moving video! Beneath every one of those graves was a person who should have led their life to the full! It never ceases to amaze me how much damage a person is prepared to do to humanity in the name of ideology!! Total madness!
On the train, the man with accordeon plays the waltz by Andrey Petrov, the popular Soviet composer who wrote music to films.
Interesting video and history lesson. I can’t get enough of learning about the pain and tragedy suffered by that part of the world.
You'll end up buying yourself a decent cottage and a good bit of land and living out life there. 100 times better than existing back in overpriced, over-regulated, nanny state IRL home!
you still need a good bunch of cash man! earn your money in Irl and then move to Woga Woga. Eastern Europe is so poor.
@@macrolly23 How much for a bungalow over there?
Where do you live. I'm in Northern Ireland myself, it doesn't seem that bad
Condolences regarding your uncle.
Sorry to hear about your loss
The uncle or the hand
Another historic video. Absolute pleasure to watch and take in your knowledge on Belarus. I will venture to Belarus one day that's for sure. Fantastic vid Niall!
Enjoyed the video very much Niall. Very sorry to hear about your uncle. May he RIP.
The history of that part of Europe is amazing and dreadfully sad. The loss of so many lives. Hope Belarus finds a peaceful solution. Keep the videos coming they are so interesting. Also stay safe.
Thanks for this video. My grandfather was born in Vileyka, more precisely in Jerchi (today Erkhi), near Orpha and Sozenka. My grandfather was born in 1905 under Russian rule, but when he came to Argentina he said he was Polish. That area belonged to Poland a long time ago. Please, I would need to know more about this place. Best regards.
Mr. Irish I wish you could film more 'flea markets' in eastern Europe. Those are always interesting!
Very decent and respectful of you to light a candle in the church .
What a terrible history for that place .
You only have to delve into history to understand why things are the way they are ?
Living in the West and victims of the Cold War we have no idea of those historical developments.
You are doing a great job telling us about them , they were all part of world changing events .
Sorry to hear about your loss .
Know history or repeat it. Communism kills, democracy is a lie, freedom reigns.
What a stunningly beautiful clean and tidy country Belarus is. Credit to the Belarusian people. You could eat your dinner off the floor!
Municipal services there are incredible. I was in Minsk in winter, and snow cleaning trucks were working non-stop.
Yeah, beacuase Lukashenko is so oppressive, according to the Irish guy.
@@bellorusso Incredibly oppressive. Just oppresses people with free medicine & education and lack of unemployment. Bastard.
@@maria.5974 Lukashenko has lost the elections. Lukashenko is responsible for tens of deaths. He is a criminal. The tidiness is just a cover of all the lie our regime consists of. My mother nearly got fired for me coming with her at the polling station with a white bracelet on my hand. Her collegue's salary was cut down to $150 cause she had participated in a demonstration. The regime of Lukashenko is disgusting and the majority of belarusians are of the same opinion.
what a beautiful video, thanks!
Hi! I'm sorry for your loss. I'm thankful for showing Polish cementary and telling about history of Poland. Greetings from Wejherowo, Poland!

Sorry about your uncle. Your videos are really going from strength to strength, keep them coming!
One of the things I noticed about Belarus is that it seems that it is always deserted! It looks very clean!
In Western Europe most small towns are dead too. Most people want to live in cities where they can find work.
Peace and quiet nothing wrong with that
Thanks Niall for your Viljeka Town. Keep caking videos of your day trips.
Clive
Hi. I From Vileyka. And I can say : this small town, but very nice. Sorry , I bad know English
Yet another interesting video. Thanks 👌
I'd not heard of this conflict as such. A good informative video and i felt like i was there. RIP to your uncle
Thank you for this video. I had tickets to visit this place in March '20 but You Know What Happened. I planned to visit similar spots as you had. Your video made up a bit for my lost opportunity.
Thanks for taking the shots of all the lists such as the soldiers' names. There's a possibility that #15 Górecki at 8:45 might've been my great-great grandmother's neighbour as I found evidence that Zofia Górecki (probably soldier's daughter). Having his date of death might help me to establish the previous residence of his family.
Such shots are helpful in genealogy especially that the Belarusan archives are not the most helpful.
I am glad I can help. I couldn't have done it with Ihar whose knowledge was invaluable.
Thank you for this video 🙂 I appreciate your work not just showing bigger cities, but, also, smaller ones. I like in your video the combination of different sites, which bring a range of emotions.
I am happy to see my ♥️ Vilejka to be maintained well🙂
Prayers for your uncle.
Until 18 century Vileika has been inhabited by Lithuanian speaking people. And after partitioning Lithuania-Poland, Russian Empire prohibited Lithuanian language, and eastern regions of ethnic Lithuania (nowadays western Belarus) over time become mostly Belarusian speaking region, and in Soviets time some part of population even switch its language to Russian. Btw I'm from Eastern Lithuania, were between 1920-1940 have been occupied by Poland and strongly poloniezed. Pilsudskiy and its 'Armia Kraiowa' murdered lot's of Lithuanians in Eastern Lithuania and Western Belarus. Luckily while German soldier's come to this region in 1940 they somehow liberated us from polish Armia Kraiowa murders, and 1945 Soviets completely cleaned this part from polish occupants.
My condolences for your sad loss. Many thanks for another informative video; delivered in your own inimitable style!
Sorry for your of your uncle, from Graham from Cork city

I am glad to see you Mr.Partizan safe and sound!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!
I will have a drink in Uncle Paddy's memory :)
Also, Thank you very much for the lesson on Polish history between the wars.
To clarify, Jozef Pilsudski has not been a president at all. He did hold some functions as the head of the state for a short period of time, but has never agreed to be a president. He has been a prime minister twice for around 2,5 years in total. He is a national Polish hero, a statesman. Later in his life he has been immensely influential in his politics, but stayed away from every day ''dirty'' politics (with some exceptions). Even Hitler himself arrived to his funeral to pay homage in 1935.
As the main army general, Marshall Jozef Pilsudski is credited with the victorious August 1920 Battle of Warsaw which stopped the Soviet Russian Army trying to conquer the West, a victory similar to that of Jan III Sobieski in 1683 in Vienna against the Turkish invasion on Europe (in my view we should have let the Turks conquer the West). That's why the Russians hate him so much.
I'd like to add here that I am so sorry of my Polish government (somehow a bunch of good politicians) who unashamedly push the Western propaganda upon the great Belarussian state and nation - our true brothers and sisters :)
I hope the Belarussians will sort their issues themselves and won't allow foreign powers to meddle in their affairs. The West as well Putin want a piece of you. DO NOT LET neither of them!
Very informative and interesting video, well done. Very sorry for your and your families loss , best wishes, Cuzz.
Great to have you back ,Brendan, hope all goes well for the country as much as your hand..be safe, pal! and condolence for your family loss also.
hello again. glad you are visible-back. as seen so far, belarus is still away from grafitti global phenomenom. and comunity ruining by youth thru everything-distruction appears yet as non-existent. visible good order, lack of crowdness, fresh aspect & remarkable maintenance of all buildings and public areas, level of cleanliness are quite pregnant, unlike in the southern europe+balkan areas. see you.
Thanks for sharing this piece of history, which brought to my mind the Fools Overture of Supertramp, of which the lyrics starts with . "History recall how great the fall can be".
Thanks my irish brother.....I'm irish but from BC Canada.......I'd love to one day visit the country your in......seems like a great place to visit, and more importantly CHEAP, WELL CHEAPER THAN MOST........ anyways thanks buddy from BC Canada.........
Sincerest condolences. Good to see you staying safe and healthy.
Viljeka seems to sum up the history of Belarus. In the US, all the Orthodox churches are closed except on Sundays and Feastdays and the Catholic churches are open.
My condolences on your uncle man, keep up the super awesome informative videos dude there super interesting!!
Great blog Niall as usual. Stay safe.
Wiwat Polska! One of your best videos! Thank You!
An interesting video with good info,You are living up to your early promise. History is on the money, Well played. R.I.P to your uncle.
Dear Irish Partizan I have been following you and watching you for a long time, I would just like to inform you that I will be in Minsk from the 25th till the 30th of October 2020 and would enjoy a cup of coffee with you during my stay there. That's all.
I'm impressed given the animosity between the Russians and the Poles, then of course the German invasion/occupation. It's interesting to see that the Soviets/Russians and Germans did not desecrate and destroy that Polish cemetery.
Not really surprising. Belorussians are the actual heirs of the Commonwealth Lithuania. The Germans were there for not that long, and during the Soviet times the locals probably considered that as a part of their history and heritage, regardless of the official ideology of the USSR. I saw such traces of our common past all across Belarus.
Where do you find a Catholic Church open these days. I converted in the 70s by entering and sitting in front of the Blessed Sacrament, it wouldn’t be happening today, and there was no pushback against them being shut for Mass during the Mexican Beer Crisis.
Very informative, Thanks
Вечная памяць. ⬜️🟥⬜️
It was great to see you asking for the ticket. Would be great to see you chatting with the locals. I'm interested to see how Belarus is different from Russia. Sorry about your loss.
Thanks for showing where it is on the map!
Like the music boys in the train. Eastern Europe music is different....can we have some on our streets? From NL..
Want music get some gypsy people
Would you recommend visiting Belarus now?
Sorry to hear about your uncle. My condolences.
Just be yourself. Develope your own style. Dont try to be someone else.
Great video, but we missed the usual highlight at the end which involves Niall eating at a local Stolovaya
Sorry for your loss. 🙏
You were in Vileika and did not tell about the unique water system that flows up to the Minsk Upland and feeds the western part of Minsk with fresh water from the Viliya River :)
Now you tell me)))
@@IrishPartizan This is a grandiose structure with a length of more than 60 km, raising water to a height of more than 70 m and connecting the basins of the Baltic and Black seas. By the way, the "Minsk Sea" is filled from this system ( meridian28.com/report/vmvs.html ).
Two of my comments about how western Belarus ended up in Poland have disappeared. Tell me, did you delete them or RUclips automatically?
Can you write them again? RUclips must have automatically deleted them.
@Elizabeth Jennings As usual our Partizan "friend" is not very concerned with facts.
Ty for the history Partizan 👍
I glad to live in Vileyka (for memories)
My condolences to your uncle. Very interesting town.
It never ceases to amaze me the atrocities that people will do to others over land and religion. Sad. Good video Niall, thanks.

What the hell did you do to your hand Niall ?
Cyclist crashed into me.
Was not far from you last year went fishing/camping at lake Vilejskaje then stayed sanatorium in Narach
What camera are you using? I like how it widens and enhances the sky.
Good videos
How can I contact you ?
How much for a bungalow over there?
Empathy and grief.
Hope you’re ok Niall? Just saw you’d got your hand bandaged. Not a protest injury?
Just wondering if you are okay amid the unrest?
I'm ok. I'm back on the road travelling today.
May I ask which camera you using?
Очень интересно товарищ 💪
What happened to your hand?!
Pilsudski never was president of Poland!!!!! Please 🙏 check before you say something. The video is fine you have to check all details before you make your video. You can discover many places which are important for Poles in Belarus. It is about half a million Poles live in Belarus now. Go to Pinsk it is so interesting city. You can find their cemetery where Poles Belarusian Jews and Soviets in the same place. It is a sense of Commonwealth.....
What is the condition bellarussian lukashenko opponent

Accept my condolences for your uncle.
Slainte, we have vileyka here in Vilnius district, in lithuania, its a Russian speaking neighborhood
You not afraid, to be " disappeared "?? Well we are...
Are you prepared (very seriously) for this very common event??
Piłsudski has never been a president of Poland!
Nice video though.
